Battler Season 2
Night.
Rain poured over Tokyo as Kenji stood alone on a rooftop.
Baran's presence emerged like cold smoke behind him.
You told them.
Kenji didn't turn. "They deserved the truth."
Baran chuckled. Truth is dangerous. Especially to fragile bonds.
Kenji closed his eyes.
The world around him shifted.
Memories surfaced.
Years ago.
A younger Kenji knelt in a ruined underground chamber, blood pooling beneath him. His sword was broken. His enemies laughed.
"You're weak," one of them said. "Just another failed Battler."
Kenji's vision blurred.
That was when the darkness answered.
A voice echoed from everywhere.
Do you wish to live?
Kenji screamed, "I don't want to die!"
Chains of shadow wrapped around his body.
A horned silhouette formed in the darkness.
I am Baran.
Give me your despair.
Give me your future.
And I will give you power.
Kenji hesitated.
Then he remembered the screams.
The deaths.
The helplessness.
"I accept."
The chains pierced his soul.
The memory shattered.
Kenji dropped to one knee on the rooftop, gasping.
Baran loomed behind him.
You cannot walk back this path.
Kenji wiped the rain from his face. "I'm not trying to."
From a nearby building, a sniper scope locked onto Kenji's head.
A voice whispered into a communicator.
"Confirmed. Target Kenji. Dark Contract active."
Another voice replied.
"Understood. The Shadow King wants him alive."
The trigger finger tightened.
Suddenly—
A barrier flared.
Toya stood in front of Kenji, electricity crackling across his arms.
"You really should hide better," Toya said lightly.
Ryo appeared next, still injured but standing. "We're not done yet."
Aiko joined them, wind swirling around her feet.
Kenji looked at them—surprised.
Ryo spoke without meeting his eyes.
"Don't misunderstand," he said. "I still don't trust you."
He cracked his knuckles.
"But no one hunts my team leader without going through me."
The sniper retreated into the darkness.
Far away, deep beneath an unknown facility—
A throne of shadows stirred.
"So the pieces gather," the Shadow King murmured.
"Good."
