Battler Season 2
The beginning story of contract with Baran of Arc.
Kenji didn't sleep.
He stood on the balcony of a ruined apartment building, staring at the sleeping city below. Tokyo looked peaceful from above—but he knew better. Beneath the calm surface, Dunzen were growing, Evilers were moving, and shadows were watching him.
His right hand throbbed.
The red mark of the Dark Contract pulsed faintly, as if it were breathing.
"So this is guilt," Baran's voice echoed softly inside his mind. "Interesting."
"Shut up," Kenji muttered.
Baran laughed. "You summoned me once before, you know."
Kenji's eyes narrowed. "…What?"
The world around him suddenly collapsed.
The smell of salt filled his lungs.
Rain. Thunder. Waves crashing violently.
Kenji—much younger, bloodied, barely standing—was kneeling on the deck of a shattered ship. Around him were bodies. Sailors. Battlers. Dead.
This was years ago.
The night he fell into the sea.
The night he should have died.
A massive shadow moved beneath the black water.
Kenji remembered the fear. The helplessness. The cold realization that no one was coming to save him.
"I screamed," Kenji whispered. "I didn't know your name… but I begged."
From the depths, crimson eyes opened.
A voice echoed—not threatening, not kind.
Do you wish to live?
Young Kenji's hands shook. "I don't want to die."
A presence wrapped around him, warm and horrifying at the same time.
Then survive.
The memory froze.
Back in the present, Kenji staggered backward, gripping the railing.
"That wasn't a contract," Kenji said. "I didn't agree to anything."
Baran's tone softened. "No. That was mercy."
Kenji clenched his fist. "You saved me so you could use me later."
"Perhaps," Baran replied calmly. "Or perhaps… I was curious."
Kenji looked at his palm again.
"So this was inevitable."
"Everything is," Baran answered.
Far away, Aiko suddenly woke from her sleep, clutching her chest.
Something ancient had stirred.
