Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Beyond the Gaze

They returned to the village, waiting for Akari's sword, and Akari told them she would be back in a week. But it wasn't true. The next day after she arrived at her age, Akari jumped into the well to return. She completely covered herself with a barrier to hide her presence. When Akari emerged from the well, she started running north without looking back. Akari didn't know how many hours she ran. She only stopped when her legs couldn't move any further.

Akari fell to the ground, with sweat dripping and panting from exhaustion. After a few minutes of rest, she finally lifted her head and looked at the place where she was. The sky was clear with the sun shining as it illuminated the mountains stretching along the road, a crystal-clear river meandered through the valley, reflecting the sun, and the wind gently caressed the leaves of the trees.

Akari opened her eyes. She smiled, but her smile looked like crying. It was beautiful. She had never noticed, but this time, it was very beautiful. Or rather, it's that she was never able to appreciate it before. She was so desperate to find a way to survive that she simply didn't have time to appreciate anything around her. It felt so good not to have to worry about acting or saying something wrong. So this was what it means to be truly free. It had been a long time since she felt that sensation.

Akari got up and walked around. She didn't have a fixed destination; she just looked around and occasionally stopped to pick up something to eat. There were no powerful demons around, so Akari simply rested all day and fished a little for dinner.

The next morning, Akari woke up in a good mood. She took her bow and arrow and used the arrows with her power to disintegrate souls. She had never tried, even though this was a great opportunity. Akari nocked her arrow and concentrated. As she expected, she could feel the threads that connected souls more and more clearly. It seemed that she could use her power in any kind of weapon.

Akari kept training for three days straight with all kinds of demons or monsters she encountered. Increasingly improving her senses to purify souls. Despite the training, these days were some of the most peaceful in her entire life, as she no longer felt the pressure and scrutiny of the world's consciousness.

She realized, too, that if she didn't do this, she would have mentally collapsed. She had been at her wit's end for several months. Although her family was a great source of support, the pressure of being on the brink of death, not only because of dangerous demons and people who hated her, but also because of the various injuries she suffered as a result of disobeying the world consciousness, had pushed her to the limit.

Having to plan every single step exhausted her, which is probably why she wanted to see if she could escape the gaze of world consciousness, even at the cost of her own life. Akari sighed. These days off really helped her. She would do it again when she can. She couldn't allow herself to be overwhelmed by the situation again.

Akari returned to the village and undid her barrier. She acted as if she had just returned. Inuyasha and the others didn't suspect anything, perhaps because they didn't go to the well to wait for her as they did in the original story. Instead, Akari had gotten into the habit of telling them how many days she will be gone. So they used these days to rest or prepare things they would need. Also, Inuyasha only waited for her near the well when she didn't arrive on time.

Myoga the flea arrived two days later with her sword. The sword was perfectly well-balanced; it was a masterpiece worthy of the creator of Tenseiga. Akari made the protective amulet as she had promised and gave it to Myoga. When he left, they started to follow the presence of a fragment that led them to Naraku's castle.

The friends of Koga were there, and they attacked Inuyasha, covering him with their blood. Sango and Miroku went inside the castle, and Akari stayed outside when she saw Koga arrive.

"Koga, this is a trap. Inuyasha didn't do this." Akari said to Koga, but of course, he didn't listen to her.

"I only believe in what I see with my own eyes". Koga said before he continued attacking Inuyasha.

Koga was stronger because of the fake Shikon fragment he had, so Akari took an arrow, and when she saw Koga broke Inuyasha's arm and was about to strike him. Akari shot her arrow; her intention wasn't to hurt Koga, so she shot at his right arm when he had the fake Shikon fragment. Koga avoided it, but he had to move away from Inuyasha.

Akari aimed at Koga and said. "Don't make me shoot this". Koga furrowed his brow, and when he was about to say something, he felt a lot of pain in his right arm.

The poison was taking effect. Akari lowered her arrow. It wouldn't be necessary now. She knew that if her spiritual energy touched the fake fragment for a few seconds, it would activate the poison and the evil energy in it.

"What is this...?" Koga said, collapsing on the ground. He looked at Akari, but she was looking at someone else.

"Oh, what is this, Mister Wolf? You failed." Kagura said to them. She looked at Akari and told her.

"It was because of you, wasn't it?" Kagura made the corpses of Koga's friends rise and attack her.

"It was you! Who are you?!" Koga shouted when he saw his friends' corpses being controlled.

"I'm Kagura, remember it when you're in hell." Inuyasha protected Akari from Kagura 's attacks. Akari grabbed Koga and moved far away. She used her sword to break the fragment and purify the poison inside him.

Inuyasha couldn't create the 'Cutting Wind' because Kagara controlled the Wind too. So he asked Akari to shoot an arrow at him. Akari did it without hesitation, and Inuyasha was able to use the 'Cutting Wind'. However, as he didn't have all his strength, Kagura was only injured, so she escaped.
