The night sky over Tokyo was unnervingly quiet, the kind of quiet that made even seasoned Battlers uneasy. Kenji stood on the rooftop of an abandoned skyscraper, his dark cloak fluttering in the icy wind. Below, the neon lights of the city flickered weakly against the shadows that seemed to stretch like fingers over the streets.
It had been weeks since the last S-Rank Dunzen appeared, and yet the tension in the air never seemed to fade. Kenji's eyes scanned the horizon, alert and calculating. His hand rested on the hilt of his sword, still faintly glowing with the fire of his Karma energy. For years, he had fought alone, relying only on his instincts and the hidden strength that slept deep within him. But something had changed.
The incident at Shinjuku three nights ago had made it painfully clear—he could no longer rely on being a lone wolf. The enemy was adapting, evolving. One man alone, no matter how skilled, could only do so much.
A sudden movement caught his attention. Shadows shifting unnaturally in a narrow alleyway below. Kenji narrowed his eyes and leapt off the building, flames trailing his blade as he descended.
"Wait… are you serious?" a voice called out. Kenji landed lightly, the ground trembling beneath him from the impact. There, standing in a defensive stance, was a young man with fiery eyes and fists crackling with earthy energy.
"Who are you?" Kenji demanded, gripping his sword tighter.
"Ryo Takemura," the man said, chest heaving. "And I'm not going to let anyone stop me from clearing this area first!"
Kenji raised an eyebrow. "Clear it? You think you can do it alone?"
Ryo's jaw tightened. "I don't need anyone. And I certainly don't take orders from someone I've never met!"
Kenji smirked slightly but didn't lower his guard. "Suit yourself. But don't get in my way."
In an instant, Ryo charged, his fists glowing with the raw power of his Max Bone Karma. Kenji dodged effortlessly, flames licking his sword as he countered. The clash of their powers shook the alley. Sparks flew. Bricks shattered. Both men were fast, deadly, and unyielding.
But even as they fought, another presence made itself known—a shadow gliding silently behind them, almost imperceptible. Kenji's instincts screamed. Another Battler. Or worse, an Eviler.
Before he could react, a gust of wind whipped through the alley, followed by a soft, controlled voice. "Stop."
Both Kenji and Ryo froze. A young girl stepped forward, calm, composed, her hands glowing with a faint green aura. Her piercing eyes measured them both as if weighing their worth.
"Aiko Shimizu," she introduced herself. "And I don't care who wins. This chaos will only destroy the city if we don't work together."
Kenji's gaze softened fractionally. He had seen her type before—someone who could see the bigger picture. But did he trust her? That was another matter.
"You're not in charge here," Ryo snapped.
Aiko ignored him, kneeling briefly to assess the structural integrity of nearby buildings. "We don't have time for arguments. There's something big approaching—Dunzen activity I can feel in my Karma."
Kenji's eyes narrowed. He had felt it too, an unnatural energy pulsing beneath the city. He let out a slow breath. "Fine," he said finally. "We fight together… for now. But I'm leading."
Ryo scowled, clearly displeased, but didn't argue further. Aiko simply nodded, her expression unreadable.
Above them, the night sky shimmered with the first sparks of chaos. A high-rank monster had emerged from the shadows of the Dunzen. Its roar shattered glass, its massive form blotting out the neon lights.
Kenji tightened his grip on his flaming sword. "Team," he said quietly, but firmly. "Let's see if we can survive this… together."
The first spark of a team had ignited. And as the monster lunged, fire, earth, and wind clashed in the narrow streets of Tokyo, marking the beginning of something far bigger than any of them had imagined.
