A few days passed, and the day of the full moon arrived. When morning came, Scott and Sean got out of bed; the approaching full moon had affected them both, even if only slightly. Sean had become withdrawn, quieter than usual. Scott, on the other hand, was restless, his movements unsteady. After breakfast, they got on their bikes and headed to school.
As usual, Stiles greeted them at the entrance."Hey! My friends are here," he said. Sean chuckled and waved "So, were you able to sleep at all after that day?"Stiles let out a sarcastic sigh "Oh sure… seeing the janitor covered in blood in my dreams every night really helps me sleep."
Sean took a deep breath and placed a hand on Stiles's shoulder "It'll pass one day. Come on, let's go, or we'll be late for the exam."
As they walked down the hallway, Stiles said he'd seen his dad and told them he'd catch up later, then split off. Sean and Scott entered the classroom for the exam. Sean sat in one of the back rows; a moment later, Stiles arrived beside him, as if he'd run the whole way. Scott glanced briefly at Allison, then sat in the seat in front of Stiles.
The exam began. Sean quickly scanned the questions and started answering. He was calm, confident with the material. Just then, Scott suddenly stood up and left the classroom. Without hesitation, Stiles followed him. Sean waited a few seconds, marked the remaining answers, handed his paper to the teacher, and walked out of the room at an unhurried pace.
With his enhanced hearing, he caught voices coming from the locker room."I… can't breathe," Scott was saying. Stiles immediately tossed him his inhaler. After using it, Scott slowly began to calm down.
Sean approached them. "Are you okay, Scott?" Scott only nodded."Panic attack," Stiles said. "I had a lot of those after my mom died."
The air in the room grew heavy. Sean noticed and slipped an arm around Stiles's shoulders, ruffling his hair."Hey, hey, what's with the gloom? We've talked about this before, remember?"
As Stiles tried to shake him off, the scene turned comical. Scott burst out laughing."Hey, take your damn claws off me, Sean!" Stiles shouted."Get away if you can," Sean said, laughing.
After a while, they grew serious again."Your senses must be sharpened because of the full moon," Stiles said. "I think we should lock you up somewhere before the Alpha finds you.""Locking up won't be enough," Scott said. "If I go outside, I might kill someone."
Sean noticed the difference, but said nothing. He was fighting a different battle within himself.
When the final bell rang, the three of them headed to the lacrosse field together. The locker room was as noisy as ever, but the moment the Coach raised his voice, the room fell silent.
"Bilinski. You're on the starting lineup."
For a split second, Stiles froze then he exploded. He shouted in excitement, unable to stand still, spinning in place. Even when the Coach yelled, "Bilinski!" at him, it wasn't enough to stop him.
"Hey, Stiles." Scott called out.
Stiles immediately turned around, a huge grin plastered on his face."Don't call me Stiles," he said. "Call me Bilinski. Or I'll kill you."
The Coach cleared his throat and continued."Scott McCall. You're the captain."
Stiles's expression froze for a moment then brightened even more. He threw an arm around Scott's shoulder."Captain Scott, huh," he said cheerfully.
Stiles raised an eyebrow. "You werewolves… do you feel special emotions? I mean… sexually?"Sean laughed. "Sexually? Toward whom? Scott, go talk to Lydia and see if a newly promoted starter is attractive to her."
"Why me?" Scott said. "You do it. Didn't you get hurt for her already?"The calm expression on Sean's face fell. "I didn't get hurt for anyone. I saved an innocent life. That's all."
Scott stepped forward. "Why are you still giving me orders? Aren't we the same? Why should I listen to you?" Before he could finish, Sean grabbed his throat and slammed him against the wall."Believe me," Sean said, his voice low and dangerous. "I know the chaos inside you. But if you give in to it… I'll listen to the voice inside me too."
Stiles finally reacted and grabbed Sean's arm. "Hey, calm down!"Scott grabbed Sean's arm as well, squeezing with all his strength.
CRACK!
Sean didn't even flinch at the sound of his arm breaking. He never took his eyes off Scott. As the tension peaked, Stiles stepped between them, using his body to separate the two."Enough! Get a grip, both of you!"
Scott turned away. "I'm going to talk to Lydia."He walked off.
Stiles turned to Sean. "What's going on, Sean?" Sean looked at his broken arm; within seconds, he felt the bone settle back into place."Scott is losing to the wolf inside him. The full moon is affecting him badly. It affects me too… but I can suppress it. He isn't even trying."
He turned away."I'm going home early. I'll be at home."
And he left.
When Sean left the school, the air felt heavy. The sun was about to set, but it was as if the light itself was retreating; the shadows were stretching, growing deeper. As Sean walked, he noticed the people passing by him.Or rather… their shadows.
A pair of feet passed beside him. Sean paused. The shadow moved a moment before its owner did.'He's going to turn right, he thought.'One second later, the man really did turn right.
Sean's breathing quickened without him realizing it.
'No… no, I shouldn't look at this.'
But he couldn't stop.
Another shadow. This time, two of them. Shapes drawing closer, overlapping.'They'll talk… then separate.'That was exactly what happened.
Sean clenched his teeth. His heart was pounding against his chest.
As he passed people, the feeling inside him swelled. The urge to bite. The impulse to tear apart.Even a single thought was enough.
'If right now… just for a moment…'
He clenched his fists. His nails dug into his skin.
'Stop it. They're innocent.'
But the shadows were whispering. They foretold movements, revealed weak points. Who would turn where, who would stop, who was vulnerable…
Sean quickened his pace. He was almost running now.
When he reached home, he slammed the door shut. He leaned his back against it. His chest was rising and falling. His breathing was uneven.
When he stepped into the shower, he didn't even bother taking his clothes off properly. Hot water poured over his head. He planted his palms against the wall.
Breathe in… breathe out…
Beneath the sound of the water, he tried to drown out the pounding of his own heart. Minutes passed. Maybe more. He didn't know how long he stayed there.
Eventually, the trembling eased. His eyes returned to normal. His breathing slowed.
After leaving the shower, he went to his room. He didn't turn on the light. He walked toward the wall and rested his forehead against the cold surface.
He waited.
Doing nothing.Touching no one.Just trying to silence the voice inside him…
The full moon is approaching, he thought. And I… don't trust myself.
With the cold of the wall pressed against his forehead, Sean closed his eyes. He continued to wait.
