Chapter 3 - The Deadlock

Two years ago

Humanity is driven by greed. Constant need of more. Proof that one individual is better than the other. This eternal rule leads the whole species through ages. It makes empires rise and fall. It forces this pitiful species to bury into the underworld, covering itself with all the grime only in order to fulfill this primal desire.

Yet the more Mewtwo observes humans the more it realizes this principle doesn't apply to every representative of this species. For those who stay in the 'upper' world, life seems to be… different. Joyful. Calm. Enjoyable. Even if they don't fulfill that primal desire to be better than others.

"Spying, threatening, getting to know more…" As Mewtwo finally opens its eyes, it notices Giovanni on the metal bridge. "I can count on one hand how many times I saw you in the hideout since last year."

His footsteps were easy to hear, as the metal staircase made them even louder. Mewtwo almost growls but restrains itself. Team Rocket's boss has an irritating habit of doing everything in the way, everyone knows he's behind it.

Mewtwo was about to say an apology but stopped. No. It never apologises. Giovanni must have known that nothing changed. That the creature doesn't learn how to write and read.

"I guess your species call it boredom." Mewtwo replies, wagging its tail.

Although the tube wasn't wide, it left some freedom. Yet the more Mewtwo goes outside the more it understands the lab tube is not enough. That it needs to feel air against its skin. Fly up in the sky. Get to swim from time to time.

"And… the outside world is interesting?" Giovanni's eyebrows move up.

Crap. That way it just reveals everything. That during every outside mission it just goes to school and learns. Then takes necessary information from the minds of those who possess such.

"I have to say your species is… fascinating." Mewtwo's telepathic voice could be heard, as the creature tries its best not to reveal the truth.

But between trying to find the right words, Mewtwo asks itself a simple question. What happened? After all, not so long ago it considered Team Rocket's boss as a trustworthy person. Despite his human nature Giovanni was definitely an outstanding representative of his species. And surely the one Mewtwo could share everything with. At what point did it change? Why can't it speak freely that those missions allow it to learn reading and writing?

Why does it have to hide it?

"I'd take it as a compliment." Giovanni snorted. "Yet don't forget that you have some responsibilities here as well."

A rather gentle way to put 'be here at my command'. But it also comprehends that Giovanni doesn't have to inform it directly. Just send some spies, threaten it, arrange events the way to force Mewtwo to get back to hideout and never leave. Instead he choose to trouble himself personally and talk.

Yet Mewtwo understands at the same time why it's like that. Because Giovanni has nothing else. There's nothing the creature could be threatened with. No relatives. No physical needs. Nothing.

Just a living weapon and its owner.

Stuck in a deadlock.

But it gives Mewtwo a clear image on how Giovanni sees it. And it also proves that if it shows any signs of humane behaviour Team Rocket's boss won't hesitate to make use out of it.

"Trust me, I won't."

Yet, Mewtwo definitely would. But when it comes to 'could' there appears the problem. So the creature is just stuck in class, levitates at the end of the room, trying to come up with an idea how to deal with it. The lecture was about some basic maths operations. Actually it was something Mewtwo understood quite well. The thing is to learn formulas. When it comes to rest - numbers stay the same.

It was just a matter of time when Giovanni sent his people to see what Mewtwo was doing in its spare time. Perhaps it won't give him anything except satisfying his curiosity. But somehow Mewtwo wants to hide it. Hide the fact that it becomes more and more human-like. In order to do that - there were two possibilities.

First one, find a better disguise. Yet it was somewhat difficult since Team Rocket managed to develop cameras that could show invisible Pokemons. Mewtwo understands only it has something to do with infrared light.

And the second one. Satisfy Giovanni by staying in the hideout and finding a way to learn. This plan was something Mewtwo opted for. Two Pidgeys hitted with one stone. Also this seemed pretty easy to do.

Mewtwo's gaze drifts towards the pile of books on the teacher's desk. That's it. Just take one of those in a way that no one notices. Sounds easy.

And it doesn't have to wait long. The opportunity appears as the sound of a bell could be heard. The kids leave the classroom, but the teacher stays. The man just sits down, takes off the glasses and starts to clean them.

Thankfully without such equipment he was almost blind. It was just a matter of a few moves to take one of the books. But as it was about to do that, Mewtwo hesitated.

Why?

It was simple. This old geezer most likely won't even notice.

So why does Mewtwo suddenly feel doubts?

Angry on itself, the creatures left the class. It locked itself in one of the toilets and while hearing the noises from outside, the creature let's go of invisibility.

Right now, mirrored by one of the smooth glass pieces, levitates a creature. A creature with a long tail. A creature with three fingers on its hand. A creature who can barely stand without its psychic powers.

Yet a creature who was created with the use of a human DNA along with the one which belongs to Mew. And despite many differences there were also many similarities.

It also has two legs, and two hands.

As well as the head on neck.

And a mind. Mewtwo has… a pitiful humanish way of thinking.

'Perhaps…' The creature tilts its head while looking at the mirrored picture. "...Perhaps I'm not so different from them."

And this thought stuck into it. It glazed over its mind, it pondered about it. The same. With the same weaknesses. The same pathetic traits. But the same joy. The same calmness. The same needs. So Mewtwo just kept thinking. Pondering.

Until the moment it got out of the toilet and saw the teacher. And with all impact realized, it forgot to use the invisibility. So it just stands still, frozen in the spot. But the teacher doesn't seem to worry about it. He just holds the book pile.

"Finally someone." He said, and Mewtwo spotted the man didn't wear glasses. "Put those books in the eighth class, next to the teacher room."

Mewtwo quickly realizes the man must have been in a hurry. That's why he forgot glasses. But there's not much time to think since he already gave Mewtwo the pile which slipped through its hands.

Human's hands.

"Crap…"

The word doesn't slip from the man's mouth. It was its own voice. It… spoke.

"Worry not, such things happen sometimes." The teacher weaves his hand.

With shaking hands Mewtwo crouches and tries to take all of the books. It feels like… it has muscles. Real muscles. Capable of making the physical body hold physical things, but never used before.

Yet despite the obvious surprise something else appeared on Mewtwo's mind. A more primal thought. Desire to make use of this situation. How should it sound?

'Can I borrow one of them?'

No. Using mouth. Voice.

"C-can I borrow…" Mewtwo's voice still sounds shaky.

"Yeah, sure." The teacher doesn't seem to care much and leaves.

Leaving Mewtwo behind with a surprised expression. And a pile of books. Which slips down again, as soon as the teacher stops looking.

The creature again rushed to the empty toilet. Without an intention to seriously put the books where they should go. After all there were still many little humans (as well as the older ones) who could spot it.

But the glass (which Mewtwo realizes must be a mirror) reveals something unpredictable.

The creature wasn't the creature any longer.

Just human.

With a human face. Two hands, two legs on which it stands. Purple eyes. A small nose. Visible chest. Obviously Mewtwo was… a she.

Female.

And to its own surprise, Mewtwo doesn't care much. Of course it makes it weaker when it comes to physical traits. But surely its mind wasn't any weaker.

And also such sudden change opens a lot of possibilities. Right now it could… no. She could blend with humans. Learn their behaviour. Become one of them.

But there was a certain problem.

'I'm pretty sure humans usually have a tuft of fur on the top of their head…'
