Chapter 4 - The Modus Operandi (Part 1/2)

One year ago

"It was obviously done by the same person." A statement could be heard.

Mewtwo looked curiously at one of the teachers (which to her surprise was also a female). But the things before her weren't a pile of books but a bunch of newspapers. From today. Yesterday. The week before.

The other people in the teacher's room don't pay much attention to it. As if they were talking about who got fat recently, instead of discussing the case of a series of murders. Not to mention some people still drink their cofee.

It's been over a year since Mewtwo discovered its (or rather her) capability of changing form into a human one. From that time even a tuft of white fur grew on her head, and she learned how to speak using voice instead of mind. Yet the love for that strange drink was something Mewtwo couldn't understand.

But despite her growth Mewtwo still doesn't feel confident enough to let go of that invisibility and become a human. So she just stays invisible, wandering through the whole Caledon City and observes human lives. Even now she sneaks into the teacher room. Mostly due to curiosity but also a feeling that what she sees at school is not enough.

"It's not something difficult to guess." Another teacher added leaning on his chair's support. "The modus operandi is the same."

Modus operandi..?

Mewtwo tilted her head in curiosity. Never before had she heard such a term. Yet the man from before mentioning it stays the same every time.

The girl stood from her place, and even when invisible, decided to walk on human feet. She reaches the table and takes a look at the newspapers. All of them mention some murderers. In later ones the journalist presumed it could be a serial killer. Only because the same fact repeats over all of those cases. The victim died due to bleeding out, caused by many cut wounds. Most likely made using a knife.

Perhaps this was the mysterious modus operandi. Something that repeats. A way to ensure that was done by someone specific, no one else. Or just something followed blindly because the method was known and gave positive results.

"And the police just let such news be published in the morning newspaper." The old teacher polished his glasses and snorted. "I wonder why there are so many criminals nowdays…"

To that Mewtwo could only smirk.

Truly, if Giovanni does something, everybody knows it's him doing this. But this principle also works the other way. If the man doesn't want anybody to know what he's doing, then no one knows. Usually.

Because usually Mewtwo was well aware of what's going on. Sometimes deciding to not intervene, knowing that Giovanni likes to keep it hidden. But this time it seems that Team Rocket's boss tries to keep the news even from Mewtwo. Or especially from Mewtwo.

There was another criminal group. It seemed like harmless information but for some reason Giovanni was scared of them. And clearly doesn't want Mewtwo to get involved, in case the creature may spoil something.

Those morons call themselves a Team Submarine. Ridiculous name for a ridiculous group. Yet the more Mewtwo considers it, the more she understands that Team Rocket doesn't sound much better.

But the most important conclusion that came from this was one. Giovanni wants to get rid of Team Submarine. At the same time he wouldn't like to let anyone know it was Team Rocket. Something that couldn't be done. Especially not by sending Mewtwo. Because it was easy to determine if the creature was behind something.

'Modus operandi…' The creature thought.

Right. Every time Mewtwo kills someone it's done by directly attacking the heart of the victim. That's quite a characteristic method. Yet if Mewtwo manages to change it…

'Then someone surely would presume it was done by someone else.' Sudden realization hit Mewtwo.

It was brilliant. Stunning. And not requiring much effort and funds.

'I'm afraid this submarine will sink soon.' Mewtwo thought as her great plan started to take shape.

But there was a problem. Or rather it unfolds to be multiple problems as Mewtwo considers this idea further.

Firstly she has to find information about Team Submarine. And surely those won't be available in anyone's minds for free (as well as not behind a paywall). Also somehow Giovanni knows when Mewtwo uses her abilities to read his mind. So Mewtwo has to find someone else who knows.

She also has to do it more discreetly. After all, Team Rocket invented those cameras that could show what's invisible to human sight. So some unusual wandering could attract some unwanted attention.

Secondly she has to find what could be done. Or rather who she could kill to somehow stage the fall of Team Submarine.

Thirdly, Mewtwo has to find a method. Something that she could do easily by using her mental powers and not let anyone presume it was done by someone else.

Not having anything else to do, Mewtwo left her lab tube. She become invisible and just levitated across the hideout, trying to find something. Not knowing what 'that' was. Maybe an idea, or just something that could let her get an idea of what could be done. Or perhaps…

"Yeah, I have heard about that cutthroat." A voice could be heard, and it makes Mewtwo stop.

Few scientists talk during the break. Many of them had a cup with them. Mewtwo's face almost crinkle when she feels the smell coming from them. Coffee.

"It seems Team Submarine already possesses a good assassin." Another scientist says. "No wonder they're so dangerous."

Mewtwo quickly realizes that among the scientists is Josh. And he was quite knowledgeable about what's going on so perhaps the man was the one who could give her the information she needed.

"People said, their boss lives in Caledon City too." Josh said.

And this information was exactly what Mewtwo needed.
