Chapter 6 - The One Who Never Retreats

TW Murder, graphic description of violence

Few hours ago

Team Rocket was cursedly predictable. Somebody could even say that working in a criminal organisation like this involved some kind of routine. Mostly because that's the truth. Or part of it.

Under Giovanni's command everything worked like in a clockwork, according to his and his advisors' plans. There were two main reasons why it worked like that.

Firstly, no one dares to disobey Giovanni. Partly due to fear but mostly because the Team Rocket's boss could be considered as a charismatic person. People naturally feel some kind of loyalty towards him, believe in all his plans and follow them up.

The second reason was way simpler. It's because they worked. Following those plans as well as every strict rule made Team Rocket the most powerful group in the underworld. Surely in Kanto. Yet through all those years they managed to get contacts all over the Pokemon world, and Arceus only knows if right now Team Rocket wasn't the most influential organisation in general.

Surely it brings some risk. A lot of risks. Mewtwo wasn't blind to them, when planning her escape. But among all these problems there was also one certain advantage.

'The more extensive terrain the more difficult it is to keep it all together. Mewtwo thinks to herself, staying inside the lab tube.

Truly Giovanni managed to do it for many years. Yet history shows that sooner or later such an empire would fall.

Not to mention that finding one fugitive, no matter how powerful an individual it is, is impossible. Not only if she avoids the underworld, but also if at some point Mewtwo decides it's necessary to walk among the more sinful part of society.

But those world-wide contacts might also have different usages. One of these usages was pinned right on the column in front of Mewtwo's lab tube. With letters blurred by the strange substance that fills her tube.

Schedule on which day the truck would arrive.

Surely Mewtwo wouldn't care about every truck. There's plenty of them nowadays. But this particular one has to take stolen goods from this hub, take them to Pallet Town, where a ship with smuggled goods will await. Then the sail will drift towards Alola. Yet this time they'd stowaway somebody.

And the day finally came. Without any fireworks. It goes as usual. With usual hustle and bustle.

And this makes Mewtwo finally realize the main problem about this whole plan.

It was a normal day.

This means people.

People who can witness everything and tell Giovanni.

Perhaps it wouldn't mean much. After all, Giovanni has no idea that his precious creature is able to change form into a human one. If he were to start the search, he'd look for a creature. Not a human.

But he would. Team Rocket's boss wouldn't stop untill he got what he wanted.

And if this doesn't happen? Who cares! There's a whole lab in Celadon City. No one stops him from making Mewthree, or Mewfour.

Yet there was only Mewtwo. Creature who closes her eyes, feeling that for the first time the decision belongs to her. But this wasn't a good thing. Rather a desperate need. Knowledge that some things are inevitable.

That this lab has to be burned down.

As well as all the people inside of it.

First Mewtwo's decision reveals itself to be the most desperate one. But she knows that it has to be done.

She just leaves her tube. And then understands that there's nothing she can do in this form without being noticed. It was a frightening possibility but no matter where she would move, the infrared light cameras would spot her invisible form.

So that's why Mewtwo made another desperate decision. She hides behind a metal column and with a flash of light transforms herself into her human form. A girl whose presence alone may raise some suspicion. Not to mention that she still wears the same stolen clothes…

Trying to avoid the cameras, Mewtwo sneaks out of the main room. Nothing too difficult. Actually the distance between her tube and the main corridor wasn't long and there weren't many scientists at this hour. They all went to some lunch break probably.

Mewtwo moving slowly through the corridor thinking what to do next. Her feet carefully step on the floor, as she makes her way. Perhaps the best decision right now was to turn off all the cameras. The technical room's existence was more like a formality in this lab. There wasn't a person assigned to control it all the time. After all, Team Rocket provides quite good security from outside danger.

Nobody pays much attention to inside dangers.

"I know that…" A voice could be heard.

Mewtwo immediately opens the door to some storage room and hides inside. Try to do it as quietly as possible and thankfully the person who came didn't notice anything.

"Yes, I know the transport came today…"

Mewtwo peeks through the small keyhole. One of the scientists talks through the phone, walking through the corridor.

"The materials could wait outside." The man said. "We're busy now."

Wait outside..? Is it possible that he talks about the same transport Mewtwo tried to use in order to escape?

She straightened herself and then her back hit the shelf behind. Mewtwo turned pale as the loud bang could be heard.

"Wait a minute…"

Mewtwo's breath fastened as she heard the footsteps. For a moment she almost forgot that she's a powerful creature. Not a human.

With a simple gesture Mewtwo makes herself invisible. Yet when the scientist opens the door, she holds her breath.

"Never mind, someone badly cleaned the storeroom." The man said and closed the door. "Where was I..?"

Mewtwo hears the footsteps moving away. And also for a brief moment, as the man opens the door she notices the content of the box. White lab coat. Most likely dirty, stinking of sweat. But it's better than nothing.

She takes the coat and puts it on, hiding the blood stain on black clothes. Surprisingly it didn't stink.

Dressed like that, she went to the corridor, and fast paced towards the technical room. If this man was indeed talking about the transport, that means her escape would be easier. If only a little.

Her bare feet hit the floor and at this moment Mewtwo regretted that she didn't think about those feet-protectors every human uses. But even without them she managed to reach the technical room.

It was clean. To her surprise. She rather expected tangles of cables in the whole room, which would stop the viewer from seeing what's on the monitors. The reality was much more weird. And unexpected.

"And they even clean there…" Mewtwo snorted while walking towards flashing screens.

The view scared her. Everything. Team Rocket was able to see everything. Hear everything. Mewtwo's pulse raced for a moment. Did they… see her change?

"No… No, no, no!" Mewtwo shout.

Try to calm down. She knows the set of the cameras. Which places are visible and which aren't. But is her knowledge enough?

"Damn it!" She swears.

She was about to use Psychic to destroy the screens. Once and for all.

"Holy Mew." Mewtwo hears a mutter.

She quickly turns around and notices a scientist who looks with widened eyes at the purple sphere. No. Not a random scientist. Josh.

"W-who the…" Before he could phrase the question, Josh manages to find the answer himself. "Mewtwo…"

They look at each other for a while. Before Mewtwo understands the truth and immediately regrets it.

The scientists have to die along with their knowledge.

She couldn't just… let him go. Memory erasement? Yes, this was an option yet it would also point to who did it. And perhaps who is behind everything.

"I… I…" To her own surprise Mewtwo couldn't say a word.

Modus operandi. She can't… she can't just point out who did it. The one behind it has to stay hidden.

"I'm sorry." She finally said.

The one who never says sorry. The one who never apologises feels regretful when she increases her psychic powers and takes Josh by telekinesis. Increases push on his throat and tries to ignore prayers to Mew, Arceus and as his breath becomes even more erratic, a plea for sparing his life.

But she couldn't.

"I'm so sorry." She whispers as Josh's corpse falls to the ground.

Lifeless. Strangled. By her.

Truly. Mewtwo didn't know him well. Or rather he didn't know Mewtwo. Only asked if everything is okay. Five years ago. But no one did it later. And even before.

"I'm so sorry…" She whispers again looking at the lifeless corpse, wondering why her eyes got suddenly wet.

Taking a deep breath Mewtwo stands up. She shakes her head, trying to snap out of this confusion.

She can't allow herself to do this. To be like that. There was a possibility to escape. To get out of Team Rocket once for all. And a plan. A plan which starts to take more specific shape in her head.

Again Mewtwo looks at the strangled body. Maybe… maybe she could fake an accident. Disaster. When everybody dies. And no one will blame Mewtwo for that. Even presume she also died.

And that thought started the massacre.

A massacre where every single scientist from Celadon City's lab died.

As they choke to desperately take a breath, their vision blurred with tears, they could notice a single figure in front of them.

And that figure whispers something.

"I'm sorry."

Now

The world keeps moving. It rotates slowly everyday and circuits every year. All the creatures who were fortunate enough to live there took part in that annual event, willingly or not. And so everything keeps moving, changing.

But there are things that never change.

Morality.

Knowledge that some sins couldn't be forgiven.

Or ignored.

This wretched truth seems even more obvious for the girl who observes how the Celadon City's lab is slowly consumed by fire. Thankfully the driver seems to be unaware of what's going on behind his back and whistles something under his breath. Quite bizarre accompaniment to the nightmare that happened there.

Mewtwo let out a deep breath. She managed to do that. Escape out of Team Rocket. But she doesn't understand why she feels so bad about it?

Why does she feel like this should never happen?

She still hears the prayers. Begging for sparing their life. Sight of the corpses. And reminds herself of her own words.

"Perhaps… Perhaps I'm not so different from them." Mewtwo repeated her own words.

She also could learn. Have her own dreams. Ambitions. As well as regrets. And morality.

And maybe.

Just maybe.

Mewtwo could feel weak. Mewtwo could give up. Mewtwo could... Retreat.

"Reatrei." She whispered looking at the night sky, which soon would be covered by smoke. "People would call me Reatrei.

THIS IS HOW LEGENDS ARE MADE
