Chapter 24 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 2 – Episode 15: "When the Truth Walks In"

Amara's POV

I thought learning about Luke's wealth was the big surprise of the week.

Turns out… the week wasn't finished yet.

It was late afternoon, and the restaurant was full again. Plates moving, people talking, Rose arguing with a supplier on the phone like it was a competitive sport.

Normal.

Or at least our version of normal.

Luke was reviewing numbers at the bar while I checked on a table near the window.

Then the door opened.

And something in the room shifted.

Not loud.

Just… noticeable.

You know how sometimes someone walks in and the energy changes?

That happened.

I looked toward the entrance.

A tall older man stepped inside, well dressed, calm, confident — the kind of presence that doesn't ask for attention but gets it anyway.

Luke saw him at the same moment I did.

And Luke froze.

That told me everything.

I walked slowly toward him.

"Luke," I said quietly, "I'm guessing that's not a food critic."

Luke didn't take his eyes off the man.

"That's my father."

Well.

That escalated quickly.

Rose, of course, noticed instantly.

She walked over like someone approaching a plot twist.

"Oh," Rose said quietly. "This must be the famous father."

Luke exhaled slowly.

"Yes."

The man walked up to us calmly.

"Luke."

His voice was controlled. Measured.

Luke straightened.

"Hello, Dad."

There was a small pause.

Then his father looked at me.

"And you must be Amara."

I nodded politely.

"Yes."

He gave a slight nod.

"I've heard a great deal about you."

Rose muttered under her breath, "I'm sure you have."

Luke gave Rose a quick look that said please behave.

His father noticed Rose too.

"And you are?"

"Rose," she said. "Part of the reason this place works."

He nodded once.

"I can see that."

Then he looked back at Luke.

"May we talk?"

Luke didn't hesitate.

"We can talk here."

His father glanced around the restaurant.

"Some conversations are better private."

I stepped forward slightly.

"It's okay," I said to Luke. "We can go upstairs."

Luke looked at me, checking if I was really alright.

I nodded.

Rose whispered quietly to me as we moved toward the stairs.

"This is going to be interesting."

She wasn't wrong.

Upstairs – A Few Minutes Later

The three of us sat in the apartment.

Luke across from his father.

Me beside Luke.

That mattered.

I could tell his father noticed that too.

He looked around the space briefly.

"So this is where you've chosen to build your life."

Luke didn't react to the tone.

"Yes."

His father nodded slowly.

"It's smaller than what you're capable of."

I spoke before Luke could respond.

"It's meaningful, though."

That caught his attention.

He looked at me carefully now.

"Yes," he said. "That seems to be your influence."

Luke shifted slightly.

"Dad."

His father raised a hand calmly.

"I'm not here to insult the restaurant."

"Then why are you here?" Luke asked.

Straight to the point.

I liked that.

His father answered just as directly.

"Because you've made this situation more complicated than it needs to be."

Luke leaned back slightly.

"You mean the building."

"Yes."

I didn't hide it.

"I know about that now."

That surprised him slightly.

Luke's father looked at Luke.

"You told her."

Luke shook his head.

"She figured out enough. And I filled in the rest."

His father studied me.

"And what do you think of all this, Amara?"

I answered honestly.

"I think it would've been easier if you just came and talked to us first."

That made Rose proud somewhere downstairs, I'm sure.

He actually smiled a little.

"Direct. I appreciate that."

Luke crossed his arms.

"What do you want, Dad?"

His father leaned forward slightly.

"I want you to stop proving a point and start thinking long-term."

Luke didn't hesitate.

"I am thinking long-term."

"No," his father said calmly. "You're thinking emotionally."

That bothered Luke.

"This restaurant matters."

"I'm aware," his father replied. "But you could be running companies ten times this size."

I spoke again.

"Size isn't always the goal."

He looked at me again.

"You believe that."

"Yes."

"And Luke believes you."

Luke said quietly, "I believe myself."

Silence.

Then his father said something unexpected.

"You're wealthy enough to do anything you want, Luke. Yet you chose this."

Luke answered calmly.

"Yes."

His father nodded slowly.

"So I came to see if this place is truly worth the fight."

I looked at him.

"That sounds like a test."

"It is."

Luke sighed.

"You've been testing me my entire life."

"And you've been trying to prove me wrong your entire life," his father replied.

Luke didn't deny it.

The room went quiet for a moment.

Then I said something that shifted the conversation.

"What if this isn't about being right or wrong anymore?"

Both of them looked at me.

I continued.

"What if this is just about what kind of life Luke wants?"

Luke looked at me quietly.

His father considered that.

Then he asked Luke something I didn't expect.

"Are you happy?"

Luke answered immediately.

"Yes."

That answer was firm.

Clear.

No hesitation.

His father studied him for a long moment.

Then he looked at me.

"And you?"

I smiled slightly.

"Yes."

He leaned back slowly.

"Well," he said, "that complicates my plans."

Luke raised an eyebrow.

"You were planning to force the issue."

"I was considering it."

Luke shook his head slightly.

"You always do."

Then his father said something surprising.

"However… I'm not unreasonable."

I blinked.

"That's good news."

He looked at me again.

"You've changed him."

Luke frowned.

"I changed myself."

His father nodded.

"Yes. But she helped."

That was probably the closest thing to approval Luke had ever heard from him.

Then his father stood.

"I'm not finished with this situation," he said. "But I'm willing to observe before making any final decisions."

Luke stood too.

"That's more than I expected."

His father looked around the apartment once more.

"Just remember something, Luke."

"What?"

"Real leadership isn't proven in comfort. It's proven under pressure."

Luke nodded slowly.

"I know."

His father moved toward the door, then paused.

"One more thing."

Luke waited.

"If you're going to fight for this place… make sure it's truly worth it."

Then he left.

The door closed.

Silence.

I looked at Luke.

"Well."

Luke exhaled deeply.

"That could have gone worse."

Rose burst through the door immediately.

"Is he gone?"

"Yes," we said together.

Rose looked at both of us.

"Okay… how bad was it?"

I smiled.

"Honestly? Not as bad as expected."

Luke looked at me.

"You handled that well."

I nudged him.

"We handled that."

And something told me…

This wasn't the end of the test.

It was just the beginning of a bigger one.
