Chapter 26 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 2 – Episode 17: "The Truth Before 'I Do'"

Amara's POV

Four days before the wedding.

That's what the calendar said.

But the restaurant didn't feel like a countdown to a celebration.

It felt like everything was moving faster than usual.

Luke was on a call in the office, Rose was reorganizing seating plans for the rehearsal dinner, and I was trying to focus on a delivery list that I'd already read three times.

My mind wasn't on the list.

It was on Luke's father showing up again.

And that investment offer.

Something about it still felt like it wasn't the real move.

Rose walked over and slid into the chair across from me.

"You're thinking too loud," she said.

I blinked.

"That's not a thing."

"It is when you've stared at the same paper for ten minutes."

I sighed.

"Do you ever get the feeling something else is coming?"

Rose nodded immediately.

"Yes."

That didn't make me feel better.

"Luke's father isn't the kind of person who just watches quietly," she said.

"I know."

Rose leaned forward.

"But I don't think the next move is business."

That caught my attention.

"What do you mean?"

Rose shrugged.

"I don't know yet. Just a feeling."

Just then the office door opened and Luke walked out.

He looked… tense.

Not angry.

Just serious.

I noticed immediately.

"Luke," I said, standing up, "you okay?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

But the way he said it told me he wasn't.

Rose noticed too.

"What happened?" she asked.

Luke hesitated.

"Someone called."

"That sounds ominous," Rose said.

Luke looked at me.

"Amara… can we talk for a minute?"

My stomach tightened a little.

"Yeah."

We walked toward the back of the restaurant.

Rose called after us.

"If this is dramatic I want updates."

Luke shook his head slightly but didn't smile.

That worried me more.

In the Back Hallway

Luke leaned against the wall for a second like he was organizing his thoughts.

I crossed my arms lightly.

"Okay," I said gently. "You're scaring me a little."

"I'm not trying to."

"Then just tell me."

He nodded slowly.

"The call I just got… it wasn't about business."

"Okay."

"It was about someone from my past."

That made me pause.

"What kind of past?"

Luke took a breath.

"Before I came here. Before the restaurant. Before everything we built."

I waited.

Then he said it.

"I was engaged once before."

Silence.

Real silence.

Not dramatic.

Just the kind where your brain takes a second to catch up.

I blinked.

"You were engaged."

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

Luke didn't argue that.

"You're right."

I leaned back slightly.

"Luke… that's not a small detail."

"I know."

"How long ago?"

"Years ago."

"And why didn't you tell me?"

He answered honestly.

"Because that chapter ended badly. And I didn't want it to affect what we're building."

I looked at him carefully.

"That's not how honesty works."

"I realize that now."

I walked a few steps away, thinking.

Not angry.

But processing.

Then I asked the question that mattered.

"Why is it coming up now?"

Luke's voice was steady.

"Because she's here."

That made me turn back quickly.

"What?"

"She arrived in the city yesterday."

My eyebrows lifted.

"That's… surprising timing."

"Yes."

"Did she contact you?"

Luke nodded.

"This morning."

I studied his face.

"How do you feel about that?"

He didn't hesitate.

"It doesn't change how I feel about you."

That wasn't the question I asked.

But I appreciated the answer.

"Why did things end between you two?" I asked.

Luke was quiet for a moment.

"Because I was living the life my family expected… not the one I wanted."

That made sense.

"And when you left that world," I said slowly, "you left her too."

"Yes."

I nodded.

"That must have been hard."

"It was."

"Is she here because of you?"

Luke shook his head.

"I don't think so."

"What did she want?"

Luke met my eyes.

"She wanted to talk before the wedding."

There it was.

The twist.

Four days before the ceremony.

I exhaled slowly.

"That's… a lot."

"I know."

I sat down on one of the hallway chairs.

Luke stayed standing.

"You're not upset?" he asked carefully.

I thought about that honestly.

"No," I said. "But I do wish I'd known earlier."

"That's fair."

I looked at him again.

"Are you planning to meet her?"

Luke didn't answer immediately.

That mattered.

Finally he said,

"I think I should."

I nodded slowly.

"That makes sense."

He looked surprised.

"You're okay with that?"

"Yes."

"Really?"

"Yes," I said calmly. "Because I trust you."

That clearly meant something to him.

"But I want one thing," I added.

"Anything."

"No secrets this time."

"Agreed."

Then I asked quietly,

"Luke… do you still have feelings for her?"

He answered immediately.

"No."

Not hesitation.

Not uncertainty.

Just truth.

I could see it.

And that helped more than anything.

Just then Rose walked into the hallway.

"I tried to give you space," she said, "but curiosity won."

She looked between us.

"Okay what happened?"

I pointed at Luke.

"He was engaged before."

Rose blinked.

"Okay wow."

Luke sighed.

"Can we not make this bigger than it is?"

Rose held up her hands.

"I'm not judging. I'm just absorbing plot twists."

Then she looked at me.

"You good?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

Rose studied Luke.

"You still in love with Amara?"

Luke answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

Rose nodded once.

"Okay then we're fine."

Luke laughed slightly.

"That was your evaluation?"

"Yes," she said. "Very scientific."

Then Rose leaned closer to him.

"But if this woman shows up trying to create chaos four days before the wedding…"

Luke raised an eyebrow.

"You'll what?"

Rose smiled.

"I'll be very protective of my people."

I laughed despite myself.

Then Luke looked at me again.

More serious now.

"Amara."

"Yes?"

"If this makes you uncomfortable, I won't meet her."

I shook my head.

"No. I think you should."

"Why?"

"Because unfinished chapters don't disappear just because we ignore them."

He nodded slowly.

"You're right."

I stood up and walked over to him.

"Luke?"

"Yes?"

"Four days from now I'm still planning to walk down that aisle."

His shoulders relaxed.

"That's good to hear."

I smiled.

"But after this conversation with her… you're telling me everything."

"Deal."

Rose clapped once.

"Alright. Crisis managed. Wedding still happening."

Then she paused.

"Unless the next twist arrives tomorrow."

Luke sighed.

"Please don't say that."

But deep down…

We all knew something important had just entered the story.

Not to break us.

But to prove that Luke and Amara were strong enough to face the past before starting their future.
