Chapter 27 - Seasoned with Love

Season 2 – Episode 18: "Closing the Door"

Amara's POV

Three days before the wedding.

That number kept repeating in my head all morning.

Three days.

Luke was quieter than usual.

Not distant — just thoughtful.

And I understood why.

Today was the day he was meeting her.

His former fiancée.

I was in the restaurant early, arranging a few things for the rehearsal dinner, when Rose walked in carrying two coffees.

She handed one to me.

"You slept?" she asked.

"A little."

Rose nodded knowingly.

"Same."

I took a sip.

"You nervous for him?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Not jealous?"

I thought about that honestly.

"No."

Rose smiled slightly.

"That's growth."

"Or trust," I said.

"Both."

Just then Luke walked in from outside.

He had that calm expression he uses when he's preparing himself for something serious.

Rose noticed immediately.

"Well," she said, "that looks like a man about to face history."

Luke chuckled lightly.

"That's one way to describe it."

I stood up and walked over to him.

"You okay?" I asked.

"Yes."

"You sure?"

"Yes."

Rose leaned against the counter.

"Where are you meeting her?"

Luke answered.

"A café a few blocks away."

Rose nodded.

"Public place. Good choice."

Luke looked at me.

"Amara."

"Yeah?"

"If at any point this feels wrong to you—"

I shook my head gently.

"Luke, go talk. Finish that chapter."

He studied my face for a moment.

"You're stronger than I expected."

I smiled slightly.

"You're not the only one who's been growing."

Rose pointed between us.

"Okay, this is nice and emotional, but someone should go before this becomes awkward."

Luke laughed.

"Fair."

Then he looked at me again.

"I'll come back after."

"I'll be here."

He nodded once and left.

Rose watched the door close behind him.

Then she looked at me.

"You really are okay."

"I am."

Rose tilted her head.

"You know why, right?"

"Why?"

"Because Luke already chose you."

I smiled softly.

"Yes."

Later That Afternoon

Luke came back about an hour later.

I knew the moment he walked in that the conversation had been important.

Not dramatic.

But meaningful.

Rose noticed too.

"Oh I need details," she said immediately.

Luke laughed tiredly.

"Of course you do."

I stepped closer to him.

"How did it go?"

Luke looked at me first.

"She wanted closure."

I nodded slowly.

"That makes sense."

Rose folded her arms.

"Did she try to stop the wedding?"

Luke shook his head.

"No."

That surprised both of us.

"Really?" Rose asked.

"Yes."

I watched Luke carefully.

"What did you two talk about?"

He leaned against the counter.

"We talked about who we were back then."

"And?" I asked.

Luke smiled slightly.

"We realized we weren't those people anymore."

Rose nodded.

"That happens."

Then Luke said something that surprised me.

"She actually said something about you."

I blinked.

"Me?"

"Yes."

"What did she say?"

Luke looked at me warmly.

"She said she could tell I finally found the life I was meant to live."

That softened my chest a little.

"That's… kind."

Luke nodded.

"She wasn't angry. Just honest."

Rose shrugged.

"Well that's refreshing."

Then Luke added something else.

"She asked me one question before we left."

I tilted my head.

"What was it?"

Luke looked right at me.

"She asked if I loved you in a way that felt different from everything before."

The room got quiet.

"And what did you say?" I asked softly.

Luke didn't hesitate.

"I said yes."

Rose smiled immediately.

"Good answer."

Luke laughed.

"It was the truth."

I stepped closer to him.

"Do you feel lighter now?"

"Yes," he said.

Then he admitted something honest.

"I didn't realize how much of that past I was still carrying."

"That's normal," I said.

Rose nodded.

"People think moving on means forgetting. It doesn't."

Luke looked thoughtful.

"She wished us well."

"That's a good sign," I said.

"Yes."

Then Luke looked at me more seriously.

"And it made something very clear to me."

"What?"

"That I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be."

I smiled.

"That's good, because the wedding is still happening."

Luke laughed.

"Yes, it is."

Rose checked her phone dramatically.

"Three days."

Luke nodded.

"Three days."

Then Rose said something that made us both pause.

"Which means one more thing."

"What?" Luke asked.

Rose crossed her arms.

"If your father is planning anything else… it's probably coming soon."

Luke sighed slightly.

"You're probably right."

I looked at him.

"Are you ready for that?"

Luke thought about it for a second.

Then he answered in a way that felt different from earlier in the season.

"Yes."

"Why?" I asked.

He looked at me.

"Because this time I'm not facing it alone."

Rose pointed at him.

"That right there is character development."

I laughed.

Luke smiled.

Then he took my hand.

"Three days, Amara."

I squeezed his hand back.

"Three days, Luke."

And this time…

It didn't feel like pressure.
