Chapter 11 - Elemental Magic (1)

Sienna and Zaya continued on with their lives, after that night's ordeal and started to get into a rhythm of what daily life would look like for the two of them.

Sienna would go into the village with Zaya during the day to get food and their daily necessities. She would often visit Sanele and catch up.

Zaya had started to play with the kids living in the village, that she saw every time she went into the village.

She had made friends with a girl, who was the same age as her. She had short black hair and was the daughter of the village's baker. Her name was Willow.

She was a quiet and shy girl that would keep to herself, but when she was around her friends and family, she would become more lively.

Her other friend was a boy, one year older than her and Willow. He had short, bright orange hair. He had freckles along the ridge of his nose. His name was James.

He was the son of the village's blacksmith and would mostly spend his time watching his father and his colleagues work in the smithy.

When he came to play with Zaya and Willow, he was always full of energy and the one leading the charge in their game or adventure that they had set off on.

One day after Sienna was done shopping in the village, she came to find Zaya to go home. She was outside the bakery playing with her friends.

"Zaya", Sienna called out. Zaya lifted her head and saw Sienna. "Come now, it's time to go home."

As soon as Zaya heard those words, her head dropped, "Already", she mumbled. She had been having so much fun that she hadn't realised how much time had passed.

She got up and dusted off the sand from her legs, "I'll see you tomorrow guys", Zaya said while walking away from Willow and James.

The two looked up at her and waved back, "Bye Sienna", they said in tandem. Willow's mom came from inside the shop and told Willow to come inside as it was getting dark.

James got up and departed as well towards the smithy, where he would wait for his dad to finish his work before going home together.

Sienna and Zaya walked along the path towards their house and saw the man lighting the lamps again. The man gave the pair a smile and then carried on with his job.

When they got home, Zaya was about to run to her bed and lie down and wait for food to be cooked like she normally would, but Sienna stopped her.

"Zaya, I've been thinking. I think it's time to see if you can learn magic and if you can, it's time to teach you", Sienna said.

Zaya's eyes lit up, "Really, can I really learn magic now." Zaya had been bugging Sienna for days after she had originally mentioned magic to her.

"Yes, but first we need to see what elements you can use, to see what magic you can possibly use", Sienna said while seating down her groceries.

She pressed a rune on the table, and the ingredients flew out of the bags and landed in their respective places in the cupboards and on the shelves.

"The first step we need to do is check your elemental affinities", Sienna said, while grabbing a candle, an empty bowl, a piece of paper and a jar of dirt.

"First I should explain what the elements are", Sienna said while sitting at the table. Zaya also sat down opposite Sienna with the objects in front of her.

"The first element is fire. It is a core part of everyday life, whether that be in how we cook or how the blacksmith's make armour and weapons. Everything revolves around a flame", Sienna explained, while making sure Zaya was paying attention.

"The second element is water. Just like fire it is everywhere. It's the water we drink, the rain that comes from the heavens or the water we wash ourselves with."

"The third element is air. It surrounds us at all times. It's the air we breathe, the wind that blows the leaves and what directs all the scents in the world to our nose."

"The fourth element is earth. It is the land we stand on, the material we use to build with and the material we create almost all weapons from."

Sienna looked at Zaya, who was fully focused on the information she was hearing. "There are other elements that are known to us, but these are the core elements."

Sienna saw that Zaya was hearing the information but may not be able to fully understand and comprehend it.

"That's enough talk about them, let's see the elements in action." Sienna raised her hand above the candle, "Ignesco."

A flame lit the candle wick, and it started to glow an orange and yellow flame. "This the chant that mages use for a simple flame. As you become proficient in it you won't need to use the chant but can just create the type of magic you wish too.

"Wow", Zaya said. She had already seen Sienna use the flame magic before, but it was still awe-inspiring to her.

"Next is water." Sienna raised her hand over the empty bowl and chanted, "Imple Aqua." The bowl began to fill with water from thin air.

It was a different chant to want Sienna had used before, when she filled the tub for Zaya to wash. That was because that spell created hot water and this one just created water.

"Next is the element of air." Sienna raised her hand over the piece of paper and chanted, "Levare." The piece of paper floated off the table and into the air.

Sienna lowered her hand and the piece of paper landed back onto the table. "Finally is earth magic."

Sienna looked at the jar of dirt and chanted, "Terrae Motus." The jar began to shake as the dirt inside moved.

The glass of the jar cracked and before Sienna lowered her hand and stopped her spell. Zaya just watched on in awe of the magic happening before her very eyes.

"That's how you perform some basic spells for each element", Sienna said. "There are other ones I could get you to do but we wouldn't see such clear reactions, unlike with these spells."

Sienna got up and got an empty jar from the cupboard and filled it with the dirt from the cracked jar she had used her spell on.

As she poured into the jar, she said, "I'll get you to do each of these spells once and we'll be able to determine which is your greatest strength and which is your greatest weakness."

Zaya nodded and sat up straight, determined to do her very best on every spell. She was just happy about being able to use magic and seeing what her element is.

"Oh, before I forget", Sienna said while putting the lid on the new jar, "Here." Sienna handed a box over to Zaya. "Open it", she said.

Zaya, perplexed, opened the box to see what was inside. Inside lay a wooden wand with a silver sliver running through the centre of it.

Zaya looked up at Sienna, "Is this for me", she said, about to cry. Sienna nodded her head. "Thank you", Zaya said. She had once again received a gift in this life that she could have only dreamed of in her previous one.

"You'll need that to perform and practice your magic. Only when you get good enough will you be able to perform some magic without one."

"I still use mine sometimes as it takes the away the great mental strain that it takes to perform wand free magic. Enough about that now, are you ready to try for yourself", Sienna asked Zaya

Zaya nodded her head and gripped her wand tightly, "Yes I'm ready."
