The two of them rarely cooked at home. Instant noodles, takeout, or eating out—there was always a way to solve the dinner problem. Consequently, a sudden whim to cook meant they actually had to go out and buy groceries first.
Dinner consisted of garlic butter crawfish served with noodles and chili sauce. Elysia was the one who boiled the noodles; she knew how to cook... most of the time.
"Kaito, I can't keep being this lax."
Elysia sounded a bit indignant. She felt her status in the house was plummeting—Kaito didn't even peel the shells for her while she was eating the crawfish!
"Good luck with that. You've had a nearly two-year gap in your resume; HR is definitely going to ask what you've been doing."
Kaito wasn't surprised, though he offered a silent prayer for whatever company Elysia might join in the future. After all, his sister was "mentally ill."
"Doesn't matter. If HR asks, I'll just say I was pregnant and now I'm out here to earn formula money."
Elysia spoke with an air of total indifference. This kind of minor hurdle had already been discussed to death in the One Big Happy Family group; she had a mountain of "bad advice" to choose from.
Kaito lifted his eyes slightly, looked down, then looked up again as if he couldn't believe his ears.
Sis, do you even know what you're saying?
"And if they ask about the kid, I'll say my brother is at home helping me babysit. Besides, I'm not really looking for a traditional job; I have my own ways of making money."
She had only stopped streaming recently; her "Miss Pink Elf" account was still active, and she posted videos regularly.
If this were a close, older colleague, Kaito would have sincerely asked: Fishing for a rich guy?
But Elysia was a pure-hearted "leftover woman." If her brother teased her like that, she'd flip the table and then go cry in secret; she always cared deeply about her image.
"So, in your quest for self-improvement, what exactly are you planning to do?"
"Train! And then, re-establish the house rules!"
Power. She needed power!
Though she might not reach the levels she saw in her dreams, those bizarre visions felt like a different world—maybe the training methods there actually worked? Even if she didn't reach half that level, a tenth would be enough to re-assert her "Sisterly Authority."
Kaito: "..."
"Whatever makes you happy."
He wanted to say something discouraging, but for now, he had to keep her stable. If she found out he was still hunting for top-tier doctors, she'd probably explode again.
Elysia did the dishes after dinner... perhaps that was the real reason she usually preferred eating out.
A day that wasn't exactly busy, yet filled with endless nonsense, finally came to an end.
Before bed, Kaito pushed open Elysia's door as a precaution. Finding that she wasn't sleeping but was instead working out—seemingly trying to "go bald to get stronger"—he nodded with relief.
"Hey, hey! What's with that weird expression?"
"Nothing. I'm just moved to see my normally lazy sister suddenly find some drive. It's... oddly heartwarming."
"Keep it up, Sis!"
He managed to say something human for once. Elysia's cheeks puffed out, but her mood didn't sour.
The day had been hectic, but for Elysia, it wasn't bad. Her brother was willing to quit his job just to help her recover; she didn't care about the minor misunderstandings anymore. Her mood was good. After this workout, she was sure she'd have a good dream tonight.
Meanwhile, Kaito returned to his room, clicked on Stage 2, and chose to carry over the Twin Familiars skill.
"Today sucked. Time for a hack-and-slash session. I hope there isn't a mountain of work waiting at the office tomorrow."
Survivor: Kaito
Level: 1
Skills: Void Apostle 1, Twin Familiars
"I hope there isn't an annoying boss to ruin the run this time."
Northern Asia. Sparse population. The freezing Siberian tundra.
Bang!
"This test subject seems to be failing too. Tsk, a bunch of useless trash."
The screen lit up. This time, there was actually a cutscene.
Kaito was curled in a corner. His field of vision showed an NPC standing at the door, seemingly clenching a fist. Since his pain sync was at the minimum, the initial sharing of bodily pain didn't make his face twist. He quietly checked his starting skills.
[Twin Familiars]
Active: Obtain a companion beast.
Passive: Initial energy magnitude increased by 1000 HW.
[Void Apostle]
Active: Summon a Spear of Subspace.
Passive: Imaginary Space affinity increased to 20%.
"Imaginary Space?"
It felt like this build had a lot of potential. Kaito touched the needle marks on his limbs. Along with a faint sting, his experience bar began to climb.
Suddenly, the language that was still barely intelligible turned into chaotic electronic noise. The shrill sound made Kaito instinctively cover his ears.
"Doctor, the subject... seems to be changing. He's awake!"
The iron door was thrown open. A researcher in a white coat rushed in excitedly. Ever since the birth of the Herrscher of Reason, the world seemed to have entered a "Honkai Race," though no country had successfully produced experimental results yet.
Kaito reached out. The mob's movements began to slow down.
"Is this the Imaginary Space?"
Interesting. The game seemingly used a "dual-world" mechanic where the Imaginary Space projected onto reality. By increasing the projection area, it created a classic relativistic effect—slowing down everything in the real world.
The downside was that since he was also in the main world, Kaito couldn't escape this time-dilation field himself. But the good news was that the electronic noise muffled significantly within this field.
He slowly raised his hand, aiming at the unstable, flickering pixels on the mob's blurred face.
Shing!
The sound effect should have been a visceral "squelch," but in a game like this, it was all about the "cool factor."
The spear pierced through the flesh and embedded itself into the cold, hard corridor in the distance. Kaito slowly stood up, looking at his hand. After a moment's thought, he adjusted his output.
The next spear, after skewering a mob, was no longer bound by physical laws. It shifted from real to imaginary mid-flight, only turning physical again when it struck another target. Back and forth it went.
"So, Stage 2 is all about Space?"
Kaito flicked his hair back. The static in his ears was like a blown-out speaker, making him irritable.
"Now, where's my familiar?"
In the back of his mind, he felt a connection. Snap.
With a crisp snap of his fingers, the base 1000 HW of Honkai energy descended upon the area. Furthermore, a powerful entity that didn't even belong to that base 1000 HW was birthed from the void.
A massive vortex of wind slammed into the tower until the walls crumbled. Kaito stood atop the broken skyscraper, facing the gale.
A colossal shadow fell. A terrifying demon dragon bowed its head. Kaito grinned; he was starting to absolutely love this game.
"Let's begin!"
Experience points instantly flooded in. In this starting zone, even a low-level familiar could easily slaughter the "White Coat" mobs and help him scavenge XP.
"Declare it to the world—"
"A God has descended!"
