Chapter 33 - Chapter 33: Didn't Treat Me as an Outsider

As mentioned before, Luca planned to check Baymax's internal programming and try to add some things.

Of course, it wasn't as simple as just changing the startup and shutdown voice commands or adjusting the emotion module.

More importantly, Luca intended to add some combat protocols to Baymax, just like Hiro Hamada did in the original Big Hero 6.

However, the prerequisite for all this was confirming whether he actually had the ability to do so.

After the computer booted up, Luca turned to look at Baymax. He was about to call the robot over, but when he looked up, he almost blacked out.

"Why are you still holding that case? Put the case down first. Put it aside! Plug it in to charge!"

"The Healthcare Companion Portable Storage Case currently has sufficient battery. Continued charging is not recommended." (●—●)

Good lord, this case has such a fancy name?

"...Then don't charge it. Put down the case and come here..."

Too tired to argue with this goofy robot, Luca sighed helplessly and pointed to the corner, issuing a new command.

This time, the obedient Baymax dutifully placed the case in the corner, pulled out the power cord, looked at it, draped it beside the case, and then walked over to Luca.

But before Luca could speak, Baymax's gentle, monotonous voice rang out again.

"Scan indicates you should rest immediately and enter sleep mode. Long-term sleep deprivation leads to decreased metabolism, immune system damage..."

"Hmm? Didn't I say not to initiate scans without my permission?"

"The previous command was 'Without my permission, do not scan other people's physical conditions at will.' According to protocol, Luca is not classified as 'other people.' Would you like to add yourself to this directive?" (●—●)

"...Thanks a lot for not treating me as an outsider."

"Gratitude received." (●—●)

"..."

"Would you like to add yourself to this directive?"

Baymax persisted with the question.

Motherf...

A curse almost slipped out, but Luca held it back. After thinking about it, he decided not to argue with the robot. Considering that real-time scanning helped monitor his health, he decided to let it slide.

"No need, scan whenever you want. But remember, if others are present, do not speak freely about my physical condition."

Afraid Baymax might misinterpret his meaning again, Luca quickly added:

"Unless I need someone to rescue me. In emergencies, you should speak up."

"New protocol added." (●—●)

Alright, although a bit goofy, it seems okay.

Finally dealing with the interruption, Luca tapped the chip slot on Baymax's chest. The cylindrical slot popped out immediately.

Luca reached out and removed the emerald-green chip containing Baymax's core data, twirling it in his hand.

"Mmhmm~ We should have spare chips of this model at home~"

Insert chip into computer.

Upload database.

Open operation module...

The first thing was naturally to check the production process recorded in the database Baymax mentioned earlier.

However, unlike what Luca expected, the database didn't contain a full set of blueprints. Instead, it was a video log of Tadashi Hamada documenting the entire process of creating Baymax, from initial design to completion.

While these videos were useful, compared to direct blueprints, many steps and processes required Luca to research and deduce on his own.

Moreover, some things that people in that world could just order online might require me to reinvent from scratch as new black tech here.

Looks like it will take a lot of time to truly replicate Baymax.

Putting aside this time-consuming task for now, Luca browsed through the other contents of the chip.

This time, he breathed a sigh of relief.

The situation was much better than he had feared.

Perhaps because this version of Baymax was still in the development phase, although Luca couldn't understand much of the core code, Tadashi Hamada had designed the modules very cleanly and clearly, leaving plenty of room for modification.

Even without adjusting the core code, upgrades and changes could still be made.

For example, the combat module Luca wanted to load. The original program even had a motion capture plugin prepared.

He just needed to load the movements he wanted Baymax to "learn" into the designated module, and Baymax could master them all through motion capture simulation.

And Luca didn't need to worry about the core healthcare protocols preventing Baymax from fighting, like Hiro Hamada did in the original plot.

Because of the "Zeroth Law," as long as Luca gave the order, Baymax would obey without hesitation.

Hmm, better to use a separate chip just in case. Don't want to mess up the original and have nowhere to cry about it later.

After a brief thought, Luca grabbed a new chip and copied the motion system into it. Then, he dumped all sorts of common practical combat techniques, firearms usage, special forces tactical movements, and other data into this new chip.

By the time he finished this step, Luca was already feeling drowsy.

With the emotional rollercoaster of the day and the continuous focus on work, mental fatigue was inevitable.

However, considering the current situation, Luca decided to push through and finish the remaining work in one go.

Next was scanning Baymax's body shape and designing external armor based on the data.

The tricky part here was that Luca had to do the modeling himself.

Even with the algorithm assistance written by his father, Hermann, on the computer, it was still a significant project.

"Hmm, need to add some edges and extra weight to the gauntlets."

"The carbon fiber printed at home isn't bulletproof enough; the body armor needs to be more rounded to deflect impacts."

"The stomach area... forget it, let's keep the inflatable interior. At least it adds cushioning. I can always deflate it before putting on or taking off the armor."

"Uh, it looks a bit uneven. Is it ugly? Whatever, it's just a shell. Baymax doesn't have aesthetics."

Muttering to keep himself awake, he focused on his work.

After busying himself for most of the night, until all the modeling data was imported into the 3D printer, Luca finally relaxed a little.

"This home 3D printer is way worse than the industrial machines at the company. Both print speed and finished product strength are lacking."

"But it'll have to do for now. I'll take Baymax to the company for a proper upgrade when I get the chance."

Having finished everything, looking at the slowly uploading combat videos and the 3D printer chugging away...

Luca estimated that getting both done would take until tomorrow... well, this afternoon.

Yawning widely, Luca reinstalled Baymax's original green chip and called out sleepily.

"Let's go, Baymax. Upstairs to sleep~"
