She had known getting the answers would be dangerous, but hearing such certainty of death from Louie felt startling for Idalia.
The answers were not supposed to make them die.
It was supposed to give them a chance at survival.
She tried to control her racing heart so she would appear as calm as possible.
Louie's hand found hers, and she could feel the warmth through the glove, feel the slight tremble of his hands against hers.
He was terrified… for her and her son.
Well, that made her even more afraid.
"You don't have to." His voice was low. "You can live. Play your part and escape this place when it is all over."
When he looked up at her, his gaze was filled with so much sincerity that she believed him. "Choose to live, Julie."
He let her hand go after that and walked down the stairs.
She watched him for a while before turning around and walking up the stairs.
She turned his words over and over again in her mind.
