Eloise set the lunchbox on the desk with deliberate care, her disappointed gaze fixed on him. If not, she had served Zane for a long time now before he got married to Selina, she wouldn't even bother to care for him after the toll his isolation had taken on Selina, who had endured it quietly.
"You stopped doing your duty first," she said evenly as her gaze filled with conviction, met Zane's unreadable ones. "Devotion cannot be one-sided. Even the strongest heart grows tired of neglect. You failed her—again and again."
Zane stiffened slightly. He had his reasons for avoiding Selina. And he felt no regret—as long as he was not forced to compromise his own resolve.
Leaning back, he said coolly, "Are you certain that's why Selina is acting this way? Or has someone else promised her everything I refuse to give?"
