Ryan is alone in the dojo, doing a handstand, trying to do the most powerful kick in Wolf Fang karate. As he tries to lift his hand up, Emily walks in, without him noticing. She sneaks up behind him with a big smile her face.
"Ryan!" Emily yells.
Ryan gets distracted and falls to the ground. Emily then lays on top of him.
"Hi." She says, smiling in Ryan's face.
Ryan laughs and brushes her hair back.
"You are lucky you're cute." Ryan jokingly says.
The two then share a kiss on the ground. At that moment, Bill walks in on them.
"Oh come on, I just finished washing the mats."
The two kids quickly get up in embarrassment.
"Sorry, sensei."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever."
As Ryan and Emily laugh, Ryan gets a call from the hospital. His smile then fades as he hangs up the phone.
"I uh...I gotta go." Ryan says.
"Is everything ok?" Emily asks.
Ryan doesn't answer for a moment.
"No." Ryan finally replies.
A few minutes later Ryan, Emily, and Bill walk into the hospital, where they are met with Maria's doctor. The doctor looks at Ryan with a sad expression on his face.
"We did all we could, but...her body is shutting down. She doesn't have much more time... I'm sorry."
The doctor walks away, as Ryan is left distraught. He slowly walks into the hospital room, tears welling up in his eyes. Emily tries to follow him, but Bill stops her. Ryan sits next to Maria and grabs her hand. She slowly opens her eyes and smiles as she sees her son for the last time.
"Hey, kiddo."
"Hey, mom."
Ryan tries to hold back his tears.
"I'm sorry."
Tears start to fall down Maria's face, causing Ryan to tear up too.
"No, no, no. You have nothing to be sorry about. You fought...for so long... and I am proud of you."
Maria wipes Ryan's tears and put her hand on his face.
"I was so lucky, to have a son like you. You were the best thing that ever happened to me. Do what makes you happy. If it is karate then that's fine, even though it does worry me a bit. I know this is hard, but don't let this get in your way. Take your time and mourn... but you have to move on."
Ryan smiles through the tears.
"I want you to go to school. Go to college. Don't have sex until you're at least twenty, and if you do have sex before then, please use protection. Just because I'll be in the grave, doesn't mean I want to be a grandma yet...Always do the right thing, no matter how hard it is. Promise me?"
"Of course. I promise."
Maria starts to drift off.
"I... love you...son."
"I love you too, mom."
She loses consciousness, as here heart monitor flatlines. Ryan turns off the machine and kisses her forehead. He then sits back into his chair and cries, as Emily and Bill looks on in sadness.
