Chapter 38 - Seasoned with Love

Season 3 – Episode 2: "Word Gets Around"

The morning it really spread across the city started like any other.

Which, in hindsight, should have been my first clue something was about to happen.

I was sitting at the office table inside the restaurant going through supplier invoices when Luke walked in with two coffees.

"One with extra honey," he said.

I smiled. "You're learning."

"I pay attention."

Before I could respond, Rose burst through the door like a hurricane.

"Okay," she said, slightly out of breath. "Don't panic."

I looked up slowly.

"That sentence always means panic."

Luke raised an eyebrow. "What happened?"

Rose turned her phone around and showed us.

An article.

A local food blog had posted a headline:

"Beloved Restaurant Owner Expecting — The Couple Behind the City's Favorite Kitchen."

I blinked.

"Wait… what?"

Luke leaned closer.

Rose nodded.

"It's everywhere now."

Marcus walked in from the kitchen holding a tray.

"Yeah… we might have a situation."

I sighed.

"How bad?"

Marcus placed the tray down.

"The morning line is already outside."

Luke looked toward the window.

Sure enough, more people than usual.

And a few cameras.

I groaned a little.

"I just wanted pancakes today."

Luke chuckled.

"Well… now the city wants pancakes with a story."

Rose crossed her arms.

"Honestly? People love you two."

Marcus nodded.

"That article is actually really positive."

I looked at Luke.

"You okay with this?"

He shrugged calmly.

"If it makes the restaurant stronger, I'm fine."

Then he leaned closer to me.

"But if it stresses you out, we slow it down."

That's Luke.

Always steady.

Rose smiled slightly, watching him.

"You've changed, Luke."

He met her gaze.

"I know."

Before the conversation could continue, someone knocked on the restaurant door.

Marcus peeked through the glass.

"Oh boy."

"What now?" I asked.

"Local news."

I stared at him.

"You're kidding."

Rose laughed.

"Nope. Welcome to being city-famous."

Luke sighed softly.

"Well… let's do this properly."

He opened the door.

A reporter smiled politely.

"Good morning. We just wanted to congratulate you both."

I blinked, surprised.

"Oh— thank you."

Luke nodded.

"We appreciate that."

The reporter continued,

"The city really loves what you've built here. And people are excited for your growing family."

Rose whispered behind me.

"Told you."

Marcus whispered back.

"Don't make it weird."

The reporter asked,

"Would you mind a quick photo?"

I looked at Luke.

He gave me a reassuring nod.

So we stepped outside.

And that's when I realized how many people were there.

Customers.

Neighbors.

Even a few regulars waving at us.

One woman said loudly,

"We've been coming here since the first week!"

Marcus pointed at her.

"True story."

Everyone laughed.

The photo happened quickly, but something about the moment felt… bigger than just publicity.

It felt like community.

After the reporter left, we went back inside.

Rose leaned against the counter.

"Okay, new problem."

I sighed.

"There's always a new problem."

Rose smiled slightly.

"It's actually a good one."

Luke folded his arms.

"Tell us."

Rose slid a folder across the table.

"Three investors reached out this morning."

Marcus nearly dropped a spoon.

"That fast?"

Rose nodded.

"They want to partner with the restaurant expansion."

I looked at Luke.

"You already gave me money for the expansion."

Luke smiled.

"We don't have to take it."

Rose added,

"But it means the city sees this place as something important."

Marcus nodded.

"Bigger than just a restaurant now."

I placed a hand on my stomach without thinking.

Luke noticed immediately.

His expression softened.

Then he said quietly,

"Whatever we build next… we build it right."

Rose looked at him carefully again.

Still studying him like she always does.

"There's something else," she said.

Luke raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

Rose turned to me.

"People are starting to talk about Luke again."

The room got quiet.

I looked at her.

"In what way?"

Rose answered honestly.

"Some people are realizing who he used to be before the restaurant."

Marcus exhaled slowly.

"That was bound to happen eventually."

I looked at Luke.

He didn't look worried.

Just thoughtful.

Then he said calmly,

"If the city is watching… we show them the truth."

I asked softly,

"And what's the truth?"

Luke looked around the restaurant.

At the staff.

At the customers laughing.

At everything we built together.

Then he said,

"That people can change."

Rose nodded slowly.

"Good answer."

Marcus grinned.

"Also a good headline."

I laughed.

And for the first time since the news spread, I felt something settle inside me.

Yes, the city was watching.

But we weren't the same people we used to be.

And this time…

We weren't facing it alone.

Luke leaned closer to me and whispered,

"Ready for the next chapter?"

I smiled.

"With you? Always."
