Chapter 41 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 3 – Episode 5: "Too Much Protection"

Amara's POV

Something changed in Luke after the incident in the dining room.

Not dramatically.

Luke doesn't do dramatic.

But subtly.

Quietly.

Which somehow made it more noticeable.

By the next morning, he had already rearranged half my schedule.

Again.

I walked into the restaurant and immediately noticed.

Marcus looked up from the prep station.

"Before you say anything," he said, raising both hands, "this one was Luke."

Rose didn't even look up from her tablet.

"Full Luke initiative."

Luke was standing near the office door holding a clipboard.

A clipboard.

I crossed my arms.

"Luke."

"Amara."

"You gave yourself a clipboard."

"It helps organize."

Marcus muttered,

"He's spiraling."

Rose nodded.

"Definitely spiraling."

Luke ignored them.

"I adjusted Amara's shifts again."

I walked closer.

"You mean my shifts."

"Yes."

"And you did this without asking me."

Luke paused.

"I was going to tell you this morning."

"That is this morning."

He nodded once.

"Yes."

I took the paper from him.

Less hours on the floor.

More office time.

Mandatory breaks.

I looked up slowly.

"Luke."

"Yes."

"You can't run the restaurant like I'm fragile."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm protecting you."

"There it is."

Marcus whispered to Rose,

"Here we go."

Rose leaned against the counter like she bought front-row tickets.

I looked at Luke.

"Luke, I'm pregnant. Not broken."

His expression softened.

"I know."

"Then trust me."

"I do."

"Then why does this look like a medical recovery plan?"

Luke hesitated.

And that hesitation said everything.

I stepped closer.

"You're scared."

He didn't answer right away.

Which meant I was right.

Rose spoke quietly from across the room.

"He is."

Luke shot her a look.

"Rose."

"What?" she said. "We all saw your face yesterday."

Marcus nodded.

"Man looked like the world stopped."

Luke looked back at me.

His voice lower now.

"I don't want that happening again."

"It might."

His eyes flickered slightly.

That hit him.

I softened my tone.

"Luke, pregnancy comes with moments like that."

"I know."

"Then you can't try to control all of it."

He looked down at the clipboard.

Then back at me.

"I just need to know you're okay."

"I am."

"You promise?"

"I promise."

Marcus clapped once.

"Good talk."

Rose pointed at him.

"Don't ruin the moment."

I sighed and shook my head.

"Fine," I said, handing the clipboard back. "Some adjustments can stay."

Luke blinked.

"Really?"

"Yes."

Marcus whispered,

"Victory for Luke."

Rose nodded.

"Partial victory."

I pointed at Luke.

"But not everything."

He nodded immediately.

"Fair."

We stared at each other a second longer.

Then the tension softened.

But I could still feel it.

Luke wasn't fully calm yet.

Not even close.

LATER THAT EVENING

The restaurant had closed.

Chairs stacked.

Lights dimmed.

Marcus left first.

Then the staff.

I was finishing paperwork when Rose walked over to Luke near the bar.

I didn't interrupt.

Something told me she needed to say what she was about to say.

Rose leaned against the counter.

"You're still shaken."

Luke didn't deny it.

"I handled it."

Rose shook her head.

"No. You controlled the situation."

He glanced at her.

"What's the difference?"

Rose crossed her arms.

"You were scared."

Luke looked away slightly.

"That's normal."

"Not the way you were."

He stayed quiet.

Rose watched him carefully.

"I've known you long enough to read you, Luke."

He sighed.

"Rose."

"No, let's be honest for a minute."

She softened her tone.

"You thought you might lose her."

That sentence landed heavy in the quiet restaurant.

Luke didn't respond.

Which told Rose everything.

She nodded slowly.

"Yeah. That's what I thought."

After a moment, Luke finally spoke.

"I've lost people before."

Rose's expression softened.

"I know."

"And when it happens suddenly…" he continued, "you realize how little control you really have."

Rose leaned forward slightly.

"But Amara isn't someone you protect by carrying everything alone."

Luke nodded faintly.

"I'm trying to learn that."

"You are learning," Rose said. "But you're also tightening your grip."

He gave a small smile.

"That obvious?"

"Yes."

A small silence settled between them.

Then Rose said something important.

"You love her."

Luke looked at her like that was obvious.

"I do."

"But love like that," Rose continued, "means letting her stay strong too."

Luke nodded slowly.

"I know Amara doesn't want to feel limited."

"Exactly."

He looked toward the office where I was.

"You know what scared Luke the most yesterday?"

"What?"

"That for a second… I couldn't fix it."

Rose smiled slightly.

"That's called being human."

Luke laughed quietly.

"Still getting used to that part."

Rose pushed off the counter.

"You're doing better than you think."

He nodded.

"Thanks."

Then she added one more thing before walking away.

"But if you keep reorganizing her schedule without asking…"

Luke sighed.

"Yeah, yeah."

Rose smiled.

"She'll fight you."

He smiled back slightly.

"I know."

BACK IN THE OFFICE

I looked up when Luke walked in.

"You and Rose had a talk."

He sat down across from me.

"Yes."

"What did she say?"

He thought about it.

"That Luke needs to breathe."

I smiled.

"She's right."

He leaned forward slightly.

"Amara."

"Yes?"

"I'm going to try not to overprotect."

"Try?"

"Yes."

I laughed softly.

"That's honest."

Then he reached for my hand.

"But I am still going to worry."

"That's allowed."

"And I'm still going to bring snacks."

"That's definitely allowed."

We both smiled.

And in that quiet moment, I realized something important.

Luke's protection wasn't about control anymore.

It was about fear of losing something he truly loved.

And learning how to love without fear…

That was the real journey ahead.
