Chapter 42 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 3 – Episode 6: "When the Noise Gets Loud"

Amara's POV

The morning started normal.

Which I've learned is usually when something unexpected is about to happen.

I was reviewing invoices at the office table when Luke walked in with coffee.

Two cups.

He set one in front of me.

"Doctor-approved amount," he said.

I smiled.

"You're measuring my caffeine now?"

"Yes."

Marcus leaned into the doorway.

"He absolutely is."

Rose walked past him.

"And he made a chart."

Luke sighed.

"There is no chart."

Marcus whispered to me,

"There's definitely a chart."

Before I could respond, the front door opened.

And someone walked in who definitely didn't belong to our usual crowd.

Sharp suit.

Expensive watch.

Quiet confidence.

Marcus leaned toward Rose.

"That's not a lunch customer."

Rose nodded.

"Nope."

The man walked straight toward Luke.

"Luke Bennett."

Luke stood up slowly.

"I didn't expect you here."

"I'm sure you didn't."

I looked between them.

"Luke?"

He glanced at me.

"Amara, this is Daniel."

Daniel nodded politely.

"Nice to meet you. I've heard a lot about you."

Something about the way he said it made my instincts tighten.

Luke's tone changed — more formal now.

"What are you doing here?"

Daniel gestured around the restaurant.

"Seeing it for myself."

Marcus whispered behind me,

"I don't like this guy already."

Rose nodded.

"Same."

Daniel turned back to Luke.

"You've been… hard to reach lately."

Luke didn't respond right away.

"I've been busy."

Daniel smiled slightly.

"Yes. Running a restaurant."

That sounded harmless.

But it wasn't.

It sounded like a judgment.

I crossed my arms.

"And growing it."

Daniel looked at me again.

"Yes. That too."

Then he turned back to Luke.

"The board is concerned."

Luke's jaw tightened slightly.

"About what?"

Daniel lowered his voice slightly, but everyone could still hear it.

"Your priorities."

Marcus muttered,

"Oh here we go."

Luke remained calm.

"My priorities are clear."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"Are they?"

Silence settled over the room.

Then Daniel added,

"You stepped away from several major decisions."

Luke didn't argue.

"Yes."

"You've redirected investments."

"Yes."

"And now you're here full-time."

"Yes."

Daniel spread his hands.

"That's not what the company expected."

I blinked.

Company.

I looked at Luke.

He gave me a small look that said we'll talk later.

Daniel continued.

"Luke, you built something powerful. Walking away from that level of influence for a restaurant is… unexpected."

Marcus stepped forward slightly.

"This 'restaurant' feeds half the neighborhood."

Rose added,

"And employs people no one else would hire."

Daniel nodded politely.

"I'm aware."

But his attention stayed on Luke.

"You're risking a lot."

Luke's voice was steady.

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

Daniel studied him for a moment.

"Do you?"

That tension again.

The kind that hums in the air.

Then Daniel noticed something else.

He looked at me.

At my stomach.

Then back at Luke.

"Ah."

Luke's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Careful."

Daniel held up his hands.

"I'm not judging."

Marcus whispered,

"You absolutely are."

Rose nodded.

"Definitely."

Daniel sighed.

"Look, Luke. I'm not here to fight."

"Then why are you here?"

"To remind you that decisions have consequences."

Luke didn't move.

"I'm aware."

Daniel stepped closer.

"The board wants a meeting."

"I'll schedule one."

"Soon."

Luke nodded once.

"Soon."

Daniel glanced around the restaurant again.

Then he said something quieter.

"But if you're going to stay here… you'll need to prove this isn't a distraction."

That word didn't sit right with me.

Distraction.

Before Luke could respond, the front door opened again.

A regular customer rushed in.

Holding a phone.

"You guys need to see this."

Rose took the phone.

Her expression changed instantly.

Not good.

"Marcus," she said quietly, "turn the music down."

Marcus did.

The restaurant suddenly felt very still.

I walked over.

"What is it?"

Rose handed me the phone.

A news article.

Headline:

"Restaurant Owner's Health Scare Raises Questions About Expansion Plans."

My stomach dropped.

Luke stepped beside me.

"What is it?"

I showed him.

His expression hardened immediately.

"They're exaggerating," I said quickly.

Marcus looked over my shoulder.

"This is from yesterday."

Rose nodded.

"They recorded when you got dizzy."

Daniel looked surprised.

"You had a health incident?"

Luke's voice went cold.

"It was minor."

The article didn't make it sound minor.

It made it sound like the restaurant might not be stable.

Like I couldn't handle it.

I felt anger rise in my chest.

"This is ridiculous."

Rose nodded.

"They twisted it."

Marcus cracked his knuckles.

"I want names."

Luke was already thinking.

Fast.

Calm.

Focused.

Which meant he was angry.

The quiet kind.

Daniel watched him carefully.

"You're going to have pressure from both sides now."

Luke looked at him.

"I'm used to pressure."

Daniel shook his head slightly.

"This is different."

Luke didn't respond.

He took the phone from my hand.

Read the article again.

Then he looked at me.

"Amara."

"Yes."

"Are you okay right now?"

"Yes."

He nodded.

"Good."

Marcus said,

"What's the plan?"

Luke looked around the restaurant.

At the team.

At the customers who were pretending not to listen.

Then he said something that surprised even Daniel.

"We keep running the restaurant."

Rose smiled slightly.

"That's exactly what I thought you'd say."

Daniel watched Luke closely.

"You're not going to address it?"

Luke answered calmly.

"Not with panic."

Marcus nodded.

"Respect."

But Daniel wasn't done.

"You're going to have investors calling you within the hour."

Luke shrugged slightly.

"Then Luke will answer."

Daniel studied him for a moment longer.

Then something shifted in his expression.

Respect.

Small, but real.

"You've changed."

Luke smiled faintly.

"Yeah."

Daniel nodded once.

"Good luck."

Then he left.

The door closed behind him.

Silence for a second.

Then Marcus said,

"Well… that was intense."

Rose turned to me.

"How are you feeling?"

"Annoyed," I said honestly.

Luke squeezed my hand.

"They don't know us."

I looked at him.

"You're about to have a lot of pressure."

He nodded.

"So are you."

I sighed.

"Great."

Marcus clapped once.

"Alright. New rule."

We all looked at him.

"No reading the comments section."

Rose laughed.

"Best policy ever."

Luke looked at me again.

"You sure you're okay?"

"Yes, Luke."

He smiled slightly.

"Okay."

But I could tell.

The pressure from his world had officially arrived.

And now the entire city was watching us again.
