Chapter 10 - Afternoon

After two hours of class, the teacher announced there would be two hours of drill. It was important the students learn the skill because they could get in trouble for improper marching. The grace period was only a week so there would be two hours every morning for the first week to learn these skills.

Outside, the teacher got them in formation and had them fall out enough times to make him more confident they knew what they were doing. In this case, it was five. He then taught them facing movements: right-face, left-face, and about-face. These were basic movements. Half-march was taught during the last fifteen minutes of class as it wasn't something used much.

Soon the bell went off to go to lunch. Instead of breaking formation, they all simply marched to the D-FAC to eat. As soon as the teacher dismissed them to eat, she asked if they wanted to go to the library with her. Kattie told her Sven would need to go to the park again soon.

Lana just wanted to use the market computer to purchase pots with lids to grow plants as she knew it would be a quick stop. She also bought a bag of gardening soil, and notebooks and pens to take notes. The girls dropped off everything but the pots in their room then headed to the park.

The girls then marched to the park to allow Sven to do his business. Lana filled the pots with dirt then grew food in the soil near the bench. She wanted the pots ready in case they were needed during the afternoon. Her bought the pots with lids so she wouldn't need to worry about the soil spilling.

By the time Sven was done, they realized time was cutting short so they marched to class instead of post-lunch formation. They all got there about the same time. The first hour after lunch was history, about the Walkers and their weaknesses. The second hour was math. The third hour was club class. The fourth was Beast Weapons class for those who had a different club. This schedule would continue for the first month. Those who selected Beast Weapons as their club got that last hour off.

The first two afternoon classes were in the same building so marching wasn't needed to get to them. The teachers for the clubs stood outside the building with signs so everyone could form up to march to class. This was going to be a shorter lesson as they needed to find who to meet and show the students where to go.

In Agricultural club, the teacher got a shock when he saw Lana's watch. "Shouldn't you be in a combat class?"

Lana shook her head but she wasn't looking at the teacher. She had been looking around the classroom and the adjacent greenhouse and was a bit worried. Instead of giving a more substantial answer to the teacher, she walked up to one of the plants that looked the sickest and placed a hand on it, healing it.

"Is there a reason these plants are so ill kept?"

Her teacher, Barry Elder, grinned. "Your ability has to do with plants. That makes more sense now. I'm not sure how I can be of assistance but what do you feel you need to learn?"

Lana grinned broadly, "I need to know all the plants, what they look like, how to grow them, and what culinary and medicinal properties they possess."

He gestured to a wall lined with books. She placed her hands over her heart, "can I just move my bed in here?"

He laughed. "As for the question you had about the plants, one of the assignments is to treat a plant of my choosing and restore it to health. I'm afraid this class is geared for those with no ability so you will be a bit bored."

She nodded, "also, I'm into experimenting on the medicinal and culinary sides. If you think I will get bored, is it possible to have an area designated for me to experiment?"

"Let's discuss that after you reach phase 3. Once the extra class is over with, this class will become a 2-hour block and you'll be able to branch out a bit."

He was right. She was bored.

Barry then marched them to the class she was dreading. Beast Weapons. They were running tandem classes which were large to accommodate the other students. This was just to give the students basic lessons while they focused on their specialty. The military wanted the students to be able to handle a weapon just in case their ability failed them.

----------------------------------------

The teacher of Lana's class was a tall, thin man with salt and pepper hair and oriental features.

"My name is Kai Tanaka. I will be your beast weapons teacher for the duration of your first month here. For the first two weeks, abilities will be banned from my classroom. Everyone is to select a beast weapon from the display on the wall to my right and return to your current positions. Make sure you have 3 feet around you clear of other students."

All the students surrounding Lana did as they were told. Lana stood in her spot, trembling with wide eyes. She was paralyzed to her spot as she turned her head and watched her classmates. One by one, they selected a beast weapon from the wall and returned to the open floor. The fear inside her mounted as she was surrounded by more and more of these weapons.

She didn't even see the students anymore. All she saw was sharp or blunt or piercing or stabbing, ranged or melee. Her face grew more pale by the second and she started sweating. The teacher stood in the front watching her as she failed to obey the command. It was clear the student was distressed but what was the correct response for this.

Under normal circumstances, he would get in her face and yell at her. He wasn't sure if it was the correct response in this case. Kai soon realized that if he allowed this girl to disobey him, it would cause disorder in his class. He must act.

Lana was so distraught, she didn't even notice when Kai was right in front of her, his face twisted in anger. He got in her face, "where is your weapon, Cadet!"

Lana screamed. Deafening. Piercing. Ear-splitting.

Before Kai could react, she ran to the furthest corner from him, back in the corner and engulfed herself in vines. They could hear faint sobbing and nothing else. All the others in the room were stunned.
