Chapter 8 - New friend.

(30 minutes after being introduced to the new house.)

Mother and I were currently inside the new home All Might had introduced, and what's more, the other family got to live right next door to us, so we always had someone we sort of knew from the town living just right next to us.

I was currently inside the new bedroom I was going to be sleeping in tonight. The room was rather spacious and had a lot of room for me to decorate and change to my liking.

But the best part of this room was the view, allowing me to see the huge city on the horizon. The buildings looked rather futuristic, with some looking rather plain, like my old world.

It really showed just how much different this superpowered world was from my old world, and maybe this time, with all the heroes running around, maybe crime isn't as rampant.

Moving on from that, I began making my way toward the exit and headed to Mother, who was currently in the living room setting up some place to live for Rika.

As I continued walking and went down a few sets of stairs, I saw Mother's hands… glowing?

Strange. She never mentioned she had a quirk before, and she never seemed to use it back home or back in town.

Moving closer to Mother, I spoke and got her attention.

"Mother, why are your hands glowing yellow?" I asked.

"Oh, Toji! You startled me. Well, dear, I'm using a quirk of mine to create a small home for Rika. Look here." Mother then began pointing down at a rather large hole in the floor filled with dirt.

"Mother… why did you destroy the floor and fill it up with dirt? We just got here," I told Mother.

"Hehe, well, let me show you." Mother's hands began to glow once more, and from it, the ground itself began to sprout grass. In the center of it, a small tree began to form, and once she had finished, a tree about two meters tall formed in the corner of the house.

"Ta-da!" Mother said, facing me and doing jazz hands.

"Wow," I said, giving small claps to Mother.

Mother smiled at me for the gesture and moved closer to me.

"Now that you've seen Mama's quirk, do you know how it works?" Mother said, leaning closer to me.

Nodding, Mother then smiled at me before moving back to the tree and placing the sleeping Rika on it.

"My quirk allows me to give life to any form of flora I can think of, so long as I have the stamina, of course, and my quirk's name is… Plant Growth!" Mother said proudly.

"Wow… that's a… really cool name, Mother," I said a bit deadpan, since I couldn't bring myself to tell her the name was a bit lame and on the nose.

"Well, I'm glad you think so. Anyways, we should probably get you ready for school next week. The Shoji family will be visiting one of the nearby malls to buy some school supplies for little Mezo tomorrow. I've asked them if we could tag along, and they seemed to be okay with that," Mother told me.

"What time are we leaving?" I asked.

"After we have lunch. Can't have an empty stomach while shopping. Oh, this is going to be so fun! I haven't been in a mall for so long!" Mother said excitedly.

"That makes sense. Anyways, would it be cool if I visited the Shoji household? I'd like to get to know them first before we go," I told Mother.

"Oh, that's fine, dear. Just make sure you get back before dark. Can't have you getting lost in the forest again," Mother said, completely forgetting that we aren't in the forest anymore.

"They live just next door, Mother. I don't think I'm getting lost," I told her.

"Oh! Right! I forgot we aren't living in the forest anymore. Well, in any case, be back before dark! And make sure you get to know little Mezo! I'm sure you'll find a lot in common," Mother said, smiling and waving me off.

I waved back before making my way toward the front door and leaving the house.

Once I was outside, I took a quick left turn, then made another left turn until I was immediately in front of their door.

Looking up, I saw their doorbell and began pressing it to get their attention.

"Coming!" a child's voice called out and began running toward the door to answer it.

The door finally opened, revealing Mezo Shoji.

He wore a bandana around his mouth and was currently standing in front of me.

"Hello? What can I help you with?" he asked.

"May I come in?" I asked him.

"Umm… no," he said, leaving me a bit dumbfounded.

"Why not?" I asked.

"Mom and Dad said I shouldn't be talking to or letting strangers inside the house, and besides, the other kids are mean. They always call me a monster, and the other adults always ignore and yell at me," Mezo said.

"Well… does it help that I live just next door? I mean, if we don't talk, we'll always be strangers," I told him.

"I guess that makes sense… okay, you can come inside. Mom's sleeping in the bedroom right now, and Dad's buying milk, so he's gonna be gone for a while," Mezo told me, allowing me to come inside their house.

Once I was inside, I noticed just how much everything in here looked the same as our new home—well, apart from the fact that it had a bit more decorations and didn't have a tree growing in the corner of the house.

"So why did you come here?" Mezo said, sitting on the sofa and eating a bag of chips.

"Well, I didn't have a compelling reason to come here. I just wanted to get to know the other family living next to us and maybe be… friends with you?" I told him.

"Oh… no one back home really liked me, and… I guess I never really had a real friend before… okay, let's do it," Mezo said, stretching his arm toward me.

"Wait, really? Just like that? You barely know anything about me, and you don't even know my name," I told Mezo.

"Well… what's your name?" he asked.

"Toji… Toji Fushiguro," I told him.

"Well, Toji, my name is Mezo Shoji!" he said, smiling under his bandana.

"Nice meeting you… Mezo," I said, grabbing his hand and shaking it.

"Nice to meet you too, and from now on… we're going to be friends!" he said, smiling from underneath his bandana.

To make things clear, Koda doesn't exist in this universe and was replaced by Toji.
