Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

Anya asked, "I don't want to dampen the move, but why is there a war between beats?" Misty frowned and then answered, "How about we wait until after the banquet." Anya nodded and looked at the plate of food. It was mainly meats, the vegetables were more of a side that was used to adorn the food. Anya grabbed some vegetables over the meat and started eating.

After the banquet was over, Misty took Anya back to her hut and sat on her couch happy to relax. Then she sighed with a satisfied smile and patted her belly. It was the first time since she felt her belly that full. Anya felt just as full, but didn't over do it, she wanted to be able to sleep later. She told Misty, "you should eat some of those vegetables too. They might not be as tasty as a steak, but it can benefit your baby" Misty seemed confused and Anya explained a little more, "Although meat is your main diet, vegetables have many nutrients that you can eat to make your baby stronger. Consider it like super food." Then Misty sat up from her position and repeated excitedly, "super food! That sounds great! Those vegetables are the tastiest for us, we sometimes snack on them when we don't have enough meat. But we never thought of them as super food."

Anya then decided to ask again before they got more into nutrition, "How about you tell me what caused the war, while I check on your health and the babies." Misty agreed by nodding and Anya began checking her pulse.

"It all started when the bear colony was getting ready to go into hibernation for the winter. They were stocking their inventory until they realized someone broke in. Their inventory was gone, which meant they would not have enough resources to eat when they woke up from the winter. It was odd that someone from a different colony could get into the inventory without leaving a trace. There was no lingering scent of another beast or clue. Soon everyone was a suspect. The bear colony didn't go into hibernation and began to start a war with their neighbors, the lions. Because of the disputes, others who were caught in the middle of it were casualties. No one wanted to admit they were responsible and why should they, if they weren't. Some of us tried to avoid getting involved, but there was no use. We even tried to launch a mission to find the true culprit, but up empty."

Anya had her ear on Misty's belly. To hear the heart beats of the babies, then smiled in relief. Anya released a small amount of healing energy that infused into the belly making Misty feel really happy. "There, those are some healthy babies. They will do just fine," said Anya as she stopped her check up. Then she said, "since no one can find the real culprit, why didn't they begin with an internal investigation? If there was no trace of any other type of beast wouldn't it be reasonable it was an inside job?" Misty looks exasperated and said, "we would never have one of our own betray us. That is unheard of." Anya pursed her lips a little before saying, "but isn't that the very reason someone would do it? They would not be suspected." Misty shook her head, "If someone was to betray their own they would be cast out from their colony and left to the reptiles to fend for themselves." Anya then added, "then it has happened before. Otherwise there wouldn't be a need for a consequence to prevent malicious behavior." Misty was stunned and then leaned in to look closer at Anya's face. She then said, "you know, you're very smart. I wish you were here when it happened. Then maybe the beastmen wouldn't have a shortage of babies from all the stress the women have." Anya gave her an awkward laugh and thought to herself, I did go to a lot of schooling to get my degree, but she probably doesn't know anything about that. Anya gave a jaded look. Then Misty asked, "are you okay? Anya perked back up to a smile and said, "oh it's fine I was just thinking of nonsense." Then she grabbed Misty's hand and said, "you're all set. The babies are healthy and so are you." Misty smiled wider. She felt she was floating on a cloud with this amazing feeling in her chest.

The next day, Anya began to clean and organize her new office with the help of Martha, her new assistant. They organized the herbs and even had a curtain to separate the patient from the rest of the room. Anya felt a little at ease because this seemed familiar. Martha then went outside to check on the rest of the items. There were a lot of beast people waiting to get a chance to see the beast healer. Martha returned inside overwhelmed with all the beast people who came to see Anya. Martha said, "Beast Healer! We have a problem." Anya was putting away the last of the herbs she had on her hand in a basket and turned to ask, "oh, what's the issue?" Martha responded, "I haven't begun to start taking appointments or have a way of doing it. But now there's a crowd waiting. What should I do?" Anya placed her chin on her index finger and thumb to think. Then she remembered the line at the banquet that waited to sniff her to memorize her scent. Anya then said, "take this basket and collect something with their scent. Everyday we will draw an item that is who can come in. Since we don't know who arrived first, it's best we leave it up to a lucky draw. Eventually everyone will be seen, just not as fast. Martha's face lit up and said with a grin, "sure!" Then she dashed outside to collect a scented piece from everyone and sent them home.

They still didn't know the conditions of each person, but Anya figured that if it was an emergency they would return to see if it was possible to be seen. This way, they can go through the patients and build a profile. The initial intake was always the longest process because there was no medical history to review. Martha would be helping with taking notes as Doctor Anya did the exam and asked questions. With luck, some of the cases were more simple than others and the process would be much faster as they got into a rhythm.

By the end of the day, they were tired. Anya started at the hut that was now her new office and looked around to give it one last inspection. She let out a breath of air. This is what was familiar to her. It was a reminder of what she has back home. She wondered if anyone had noticed her missing or if there was even enough time for them to notice. She really wanted to see for herself. This was all too new to her and she was doing the best she could to not give into her fears.
