Chapter 2 - The Outbreak

Early in the morning, Dr. Patel was in the operating room, treating a woman named Nadia. She was standing in the OR with three of her nurses: two women and one man. Nadia had a rare blood disorder with a bizarre infection that was initially thought to be a severe case of malaria.

"Doctor, her blood is acting up," Leyla said. They all looked in the operating mirror and saw that her blood was overreacting. "Oh my God, what is that?" Liam, the nurse, asked.

Dr. Patel took an injection and injected Nadia. Nadia's blood seemed to cool down. Dr. Patel took some of her blood. "I will look into it more. Leyla, finish her and stabilize her for now. She can't leave the hospital yet."

"I will, Doctor," Leyla replied. Patel looked at her watch. "My God, I am late. I have to take care of other patients. Liam and Lucy, help Leyla. I will go to the 12th floor for my other appointment."

"Okay, Doctor," they replied. Patel walked away and left them alone. Liam was cleaning the patient while Leyla managed to stabilize her. They took her out of the OR, and Nadia was lying on the bed. Liam, Lucy, and Leyla were taking notes on her condition.

"Guys, look," they said. The monitor was alerting, and Nadia's heart was beating rapidly. "What in the hell is this shit?" Liam exclaimed. "I will go get some more sedatives. You guys stay here and help calm her down."

Leyla walked away, leaving Liam and Lucy. "What do you think is wrong with her?" Lucy asked.

"The hell would I know," Liam replied. "This bitch has been driving us crazy since morning. We can't even operate properly. Something is fishy here."

Suddenly, Nadia opened her eyes, and they were filled with red circles. "My God, what is this?" Nadia started acting strangely, stood up, and started biting Lucy's neck.

"What the hell?" Liam tried to hold her, but Nadia was stronger. She held Liam back and bit him too. She was drinking their blood.

Leyla showed up with the sedative. Liam saw Nadia going at her very fast. Leyla was nervous and shaking out of fear. Nadia was almost at her when Liam held her and pushed her back hard. He coughed blood and spilled it on Leyla.

Lucy stood up and started changing. She became like Nadia. "Go now, run. This is a virus," she said.

Leyla started running away as fast as she could, heading to Dr. Patel. Lucy and Nadia managed to get into the corridor and started biting people, patients, nurses, and everyone in their way. They were very ruthless, and whoever got bitten turned into one of them and started chasing others.

Ayanna closed her eyes as Dr. Patel injected her. After five minutes, Ayanna was completely out. Just as Dr. Patel was about to start, one of her nurses showed up with blood all over her.

"Doctor, doctor, please, you have to come now," she said.

"What is going on? Leyla, you can't be in here with blood all over you," Dr. Patel replied.

"It's an emergency, it's about Nadia," Leyla said.

"What is wrong with Nadia?" Dr. Patel asked.

"She woke up and all of a sudden started attacking people and biting them. Her eyes changed, and she became very strong."

Dr. Patel was shocked as she walked outside her working quarters, locking Ayanna inside alone in deep sleep. They were going to the 10th floor. They were in the elevator when they reached the floor, and they were surprised to see people turned into vampires and started chasing other people.

"My God, we have to run now," Dr. Patel said, pushing the elevator button, then pushing the emergency button. The whole hospital was alerting people to leave immediately. Some of the vampires were falling down from the windows from the 10th floor to the ground. People were shocked down. Vampires were getting up and started biting people on the streets.

Zero and other people in the 12th floor heard the alert. "What is that?" "What is going on?" people were asking curiously. Zero stood up and walked to the window to look outside. He saw people attacking each other and biting one another.

Zara was still sitting down, shaking while closing her eyes. Some elevators were opened, and vampires started coming out and biting people. Chaos started, and people started running for their lives.

Zero was trying to get to Zara, but people's movements were very tight. He couldn't reach her. He used the stairs and ran down the floor, trying to get out. Wherever he passed, vampires were biting people and chasing others.

Leyla and Dr. Patel got stuck in the elevator, still on the 10th floor. Zero showed up. The corridors were filled with hungry vampires. He saw Dr. Patel and Leyla stuck in the elevator, and he saw a military man trying to help people get inside the mini hall nearby while shooting every vampire coming his way.

Zero went to help open the elevator. "Quickly, let's go now," he said, trying to help them to the hall. Vampires were going for them. He grabbed a mini axe and started killing them while running away. They reached the hall and got inside.

Zero accidentally dropped the axe outside. "Quickly, get inside now," the military man shouted. They all managed to get inside. The military man locked the door, and they started closing every open glass from the inside.

There were a total of eight people stuck inside. "Can anyone please tell me what the hell is going on outside?" the military man asked.

Everyone was shaking with fear. Zero was looking outside the windows. The whole street was filled with vampires. "Seems like we're stuck here. These people have taken down the whole street, and by now, we don't even know which floor is a safe way for us to get out," Zero said while closing the windows.

Vampires were taking over the whole hospital and some of the streets nearby. They were spreading very quickly.

Ayanna was still stuck inside Dr. Patel's quarters, sleeping all alone, and the only one who had access to the quarters was Dr. Patel herself, and she was stuck in a mini hall on the 10th floor.

Everyone was quiet inside the hall, listening to what was happening outside. People were screaming, and vampires were all over the place.

Zero walked to Dr. Patel. "You are Dr. Patel, can you please explain to us what is going on?" he asked.

She was so quiet that all of them started staring at her. "Guys, please give her some space. She needs to calm down," Leyla said, speaking on her behalf.

"And we need to find the answers! We need to know why all those people suddenly started changing into ugly, crazy bastards and bitches, biting everyone," the military man shouted with anger.

"Back off, military man," Zero said, defending Dr. Patel while pushing the military man.

"Name is Alex, son, and believe me, next time you push me like that, I will put a bullet in your head," Alex said, threatening Zero.

"You think I'm afraid of a gun?" Zero replied.

"Quiet," Dr. Patel shouted. Everyone stared at her as she stood up. "I need to go to my quarters and figure something out."

Alex pointed a gun at Dr. Patel. "I'm sorry, Doctor, but no one is opening that door."

"You will have to shoot me then, but nothing is stopping me from going to my quarters," Dr. Patel said, walking to the door and opening it. Vampires were heading towards them. Alex started shooting at them while closing the door.

The door lock clicked. "Nobody is going out, and no one is getting inside. I need you all to calm down," Alex said, holding an M24 and pointing it at people.

"Funny, speaking with a gun to our faces," Zero said, standing up and facing him.

"Look, the situation is bad out there. We don't know what is going on. Everybody just started biting themselves. It's a total chaos. We cannot risk opening this hall. That's why I need you to calm down," Alex said.

There was a banging on the door. A woman and a child showed up, begging for help. "Please open the door. Help us, please," they said. A young girl, about 7 years old, was holding a teddy bear.

Zero recognized the girl. It was Zara from the 12th floor. "I'm sorry, we cannot do that. You will have to find another room for yourselves," Alex said.

"Please, she's just a child," Zero said.

"She may be infected. There's no way I'm opening the door," Alex replied.

Zero hit Alex from the back of his head, so hard that he fell down and fainted. Zero took the keys and opened the door. "Get inside now," he said. The woman and Zara walked inside.

Dr. Patel was shocked to see Zara again. Zara walked to her. "Dr, what happened to my mother? I can't find her anywhere," she asked, crying.

Zara's mother was Nadia. Leyla hugged her. "Hey, listen to me, do you remember me?" Zero kneeled down at her.

"You're the man I saw on the 12th floor," she replied.

"Yes, now listen. I'm going to help you find your mother, okay? We will get your mother," Zero said. Zara hugged him.

Dr. Patel and Leyla were staring at Zero. A while later, Alex opened his eyes, and he saw himself tied with ropes on a chair. He started laughing. "You're a dead man, Zero," he said.

"We cannot let you keep jeopardizing our lives. I will keep a gun for the time being," Zero replied, speaking after he walked away to the others.

Dr. Patel walked to him. "Listen, I need to go to the 12th floor," she said.

"I'm sorry, Doc. The hospital is overrun by vampires. If we open that door, we're dead meat," Zero replied.

"You don't understand. I have a patient. I sedated her with a sleeping drug to stop her heart. If I'm not there in 5 hours, she will die," Dr. Patel explained.

"With all this chaos, I'm pretty sure the vampires have got to her already," Zero said.

"No, it's a high-security area. No one can break the glass, and I only have access to the quarters," Dr. Patel insisted.

Zero stared at her. "Please, she has only 5 hours left," Dr. Patel pleaded.

"Tell me something, Doc. Who is this patient that you're willing to risk your life for?" Zero asked.

"Her name is Ayanna," Dr. Patel replied.

Zero was shocked hearing that name. "Ayanna?" he repeated, his expression changing.
