The walk back from the coffee shop felt shorter than the walk there. The sun had climbed higher in the sky, filtering through the trees and casting playful shadows across the pavement. Rowan kept glancing at Damon and Nicklaus on either side of him. They walked slowly, deliberately, almost as if they knew he was observing every small movement. Their presence was steady, unshakable, and yet… it did not feel oppressive.
Rowan's chest still fluttered, remembering the conversation over tea. The way Damon had leaned back when Rowan asked about his childhood, the faint smirk Nicklaus had given him when he lightly brushed his knuckles against his own. Every detail replayed in his mind. He wondered if Maxx noticed the subtle change in his expression.
"Did… did you always talk like that?" Rowan asked quietly, more to himself than anyone else. His voice barely carried over the rustle of leaves.
