Chapter Forty-one: Paranormal Realm 39
'Nyphrin,' Rowan called out softly.
There was no immediate response.
He waited, patience ingrained into him by years of necessity rather than virtue. When her presence brushed against his consciousness, it was light, restrained.
[You are awake, when you should be resting, Host needs ample rest in order to function productively..]
Rowan did not bother denying it.
'Something is wrong with Maxx,' he said. 'more than what he's willing to talk about to me.'
There was a pause, brief pause before she responded.
[You suspect he's concealing something from you.]
'I know that he's hiding something from me,' Rowan replied. 'Maxx doesn't hide without a reason, a good reason at that.'
He shifted slightly, careful not to disturb Maxx, his gaze tracing the familiar outline of his brother's face. Even in rest, Maxx looked guarded, as though sleep itself was a negotiation rather than surrender.
