Rowan snapped back to reality at the sound of a broken breath.
It was small at first, barely more than a hitch in the air, but it cut through the quiet of the room with unnerving clarity. The night had been calm, wrapped in the kind of stillness that pressed gently against the senses. Moonlight spilled faintly through the narrow window, silvering the stone floor and the edge of the bed.
Maxx lay beside him.
His body had curled inward, shoulders tense, fists clenched so tightly the knuckles had gone pale. His brows were drawn together, mouth parted as another strained sound slipped free, softer this time, but heavier.
"No… no."
The word dissolved into a whimper.
Rowan turned fully onto his side.
For a moment, he simply watched.
