The voice of the suspicious creature didn't alert the Blade. So it should be a mind attack of sort.
Steel doesn't know how lethal this attack is though. It isn't like he is imagining things. It is a projection or an illusion made by that creature to lure him towards itself.
It reminds him of that helpless cry that he heard one night. That was also to lure him into the darkness.
This isn't that different from the last time.
Could it be the same Devil spawn? No it can't be. There are few devil spawns that uses mind attacks to hunt their prey. But it isn't rare like a devil spawn that uses a soul weapon like the Demonoid blade.
Steel isn't sure what he should really be doing. On one side, he can just ignore the call and just go on his way. The worst that could happen is the devil would just increase the frequency of its attacks.
That could be a concerning matter but he got a helpful guide in his head. She can just tell him what is really happening. The mind attack's target is Steel not River. So she should be free to see the reality of the situation.
There's another side to it too though which is really troubling. The devil spawn can crawl out of the darkness to attack him if he were to ignore it. That could be dangerous for the both parties. But Devil spawns aren't really known for keeping themselves safe and secure.
If that were to happen. The blade would come to know about his presence and turn him into a dead demon. And he really doesn't want to be a dead demon.
Devil spawns that usually depends on mind attack aren't really good at fighting. So perhaps he can kill it if the devil spawn were to attack him. The problem of fighting it without alerting the devil still remains though.
'To hell with this. I can handle if worst happen. I don't have time right now.'
Steel ignores the creepy call and keeps on going.
For the first few minutes, the call kept on bothering him. It talked about how dangerous the place he walked through.
Strangely enough it only talked about the danger of Humans. As if the humans are more terrifying than anything else.
Also it refer to Steel as a Little Miss.
Either the devil is unable to make sentences that he never used. Or these words are of someone it devoured. Whatever the case, the guy it devoured sure was a creep.
Soon enough, the creature calls disappeared completely.
The silence crawls back.
Steel kept on walking while checking for any movement. The devil wouldn't just give up. It had to be thinking of doing something diabolical.
However, Steel didn't noticed anything for an hour. It is like the Devil spawn just disappeared.
But then River said.
[something is moving to the left of you…]
Steels curses and complains about why can she use his own eyes so much better than him. It isn't fair at all. He didn't say it out loud, just in his head where River may or may not have heard it all. She didn't replied so maybe she didn't heard it.
Steel stops with caution and looks at his left. He needs to confirm what is happening. How dangerous is the enemy and if he can take it.
He saw darkness and nothing else. But it felt odd.
The Darkness isn't normal. It is like a flowing oddity that is moving as he does and watching him with killing intent.
'don't tell me…'
The whole darkness itself is the Devil spawn. it is just so dark that it is impossible to notice its features. The movements of the devil is unnatural and unnoticeable as it doesn't even exist.
Steel calms himself down and kept on walking.
'it wouldn't attack me. It knows that if it does then that blade would kill both of us. It is a death sentence. But what is it thinking?.... Curses. It is just impossible to tell with these ugly things...'
This devil is like a parasite under the skin of the blade. It hides from the blade in the day and when the night comes. It feed on the stragglers who survived the blade like Steel. That is his guess.
Steel walks with his eyes glued to his left. The devil makes no attempt at attacking him. At least, he thinks that it didn't.
River's been telling him about all that she can. But even she fails to describe the Devil. According to her, it is shapeless or just like a cloud.
Could the devil be able to affect River's vision at well? Surely not.
Steel can only pray to the dead God that he can escape this creature of darkness. But it seem like his prays are not being heard.
After few minutes of walking with the Devil spawn on the left. He finally heard from River that it is doing something different.
As soon as she said that, two glowing pair of eye like shapes appears inside of the darkness. They're going to look at Steel any second now. Removing his cover of darkness.
'why the hell do you having headlights? What in the actual…'
Steel gives up on thinking and let his instincts take over. He was ready to jump or duck from the start but those actions won't be any help. The best course of action is to just fall on the ground. Laying as flat on the ground as possible.
And as he does so the light comes from the left. Erasing the cover of darkness away form him.
Fortunately, the vegetation is high enough for him to hide inside. But he needs to find a better cover.
So without wasting any time and giving up on not making any sounds. He crawls towards anything that looked big enough to shield him form the light.
It took only few second. He reached his cover form the light. He wasn't aware what could it be. Was it a fallen tree? Or a big rock? It didn't really mattered.
Then he heard it. The blade is here.
He heard air being cut in two by the blade. One slash, then two more slashes at the ground where he crawled out. The force made him shiver. He didn't dare look.
The devil is somehow isn't noticed by the blade. It is probably keeping itself away from the source of light.
He can feel it. The shadows are moving. So the Darkness that carries the light is already moving as well.
It wants the Blade to notice Steel. So the blade can kill its prey for it.
Steel just couldn't believe its diabolical scheme. That devil wasn't following him for no reason. It was waiting for the exact movement when he is deprived of all the near hiding supports. And now, it has found it. He can't hide and run from the light.
The blade is above him. Waiting for the light to reflect on its mirror like surface and reveal Steel.
