Chapter 1 - A plague’s dream

The night was cold and rainy just like a normal day but the cold was unbearable somehow. On a secluded road was a body. It seemed dead but somehow breathing.

"I-I can not die here" Yuan said as his eyes stares at the rainy sky with no focus. He was lying there with a dagger on his chest, his breathing was painful but his desire for life was striking.

His legs were broken and his left hand had missing fingers. How terrifying it is to be lying on the cold floor and nobody to tend a hand but still, his desire for living was a priority, his rage was unbearable, his breathing was slow but it does not matter all he wants is to see the next rays of sunshine.

Two days before

In the noisy streets of Nelver, there was a big commotion. "You bastard, you think you can steal my artefacts?!" A middle age man said as he held a stick and slammed it in the back of a boy.

"You are lying, that's not yours and I will not give it" said the boy as he was holding the artefact and a worn out blanket to his chest.

For a child, the boy has a cold glare that not many adult could have. Determined, the merchant continued to beat the child mercifully.

The boy was lying on the floor and calmly grabbed his objects close to his chest he was determined to keep them no matter what.

"You are spouting none sense old man. I won't give what's mine" said the boy with a cold glare. No expression was seen on his face.

The merchant hesitated for a bit before continuing to beat the boy.

Despite the commotion nobody went over to support the boy as if he was a plague, his face was disfigured with the beating of the stick.

The stick aiming for the boy's head when suddenly a man held the stick firmly and it snaps it out of the pressure.

"Sir, why are you beating this child out of the blue?" Asked the man who intervened in the scene. "This plague just stole one of my artefacts" said the merchant.

"You are lying" the boy said coldly as he stood up and held the blanket close to him. Intrigued, the man asked to the merchant, "then Sir, what did he stole?". The merchant went completely still by the question. He couldn't answer the question.

The commoners and passerby just looked at the scenes with a fake disdain look.

"If you identify the artefact and it's true, then the boy will give you back your artefact" the man said with an amused look at the merchant.

Trying to defend himself, the merchant said, "why are you believing that plague, I said he stole my artefact, no matter what artefact it was, it's still mine."

"Then sir, identify your artefact, as a merchant, you should know your goods and what article disappeared". In a fury, the merchant snapped back, "who are you first of all?! you don't have any say here".

Amused, the man showed his badge, "Then sir, you are talking to a police officer of the 4th squad of defense" the man showed his identity to the merchant.

As the merchant recognized the badge, he went still and his face was pale. To be on the good side of the revealed Police officer, the merchant tried to smoothen the discussion.

"Officer, I don't want to disturb you further, as you can see, the child just took an artefact and you don't need to waste your time on these small things."

"Who told you that it was a waste of time?" The officer said in amusement.

The merchant: tsk that does not clear the doubts, that this boy is a thief.

The words of the merchant seemed shallow, he was doubting as the time passes.

The passerby were faking their anger just to be on the good side of the man,

"DONT YOU KNOW SHAME OLD MAN, YOU MUST BE JUDGED ON THE COURT"

In a fury, the old man yelled and defend himself further. But as we can see there was nothing to defend, the merchant was a liar.

The man clapped his hands amused by the sudden turn of events. "well well let's discuss it further in my office" the man said to the merchant.

The boy was lost by the events of action and walked away. Before the boy could go away, the man called him one last time.

"What's your name kid?" He said with a smile.

"My name is Yuan" the boy said.

"next time if something happens again call the nearest authorities." The man said proudly.

"As if it's possible" Yuan sneered and walked away before the officer could say more.

Yuan ran back to his "home". This world has been discriminating the poor and raising the rich on the social ladder and many factors are at play but the most important factor is...…MAGIC.

Magic was primordial in this world, humans have been blessed by the nature with magic they lived a quite peaceful life without being attacked by superior beings.

As their kingdom extended they decided to divide themselves into two entities.

The chosen ones who possess magic are on the top of the pyramid while the plagues those obnoxious people could not detain magic were the bottom feeders just like Yuan but something will change his destiny and bring him on the top if possible he will surpass this pyramid.

Yuan was in his "house" if we can call it so. He took the blanket and removed it which reveals his treasures. A crumb of bread not so glorious for dinner, a rusted pipe for defense even if he knows it is very well useless and finally a pendant.

This pendant can be considered to be the treasure the merchant tried to steal. Yuan wore it, "at least I don't know it's attributes but to be sure let's wear it" he said.

Suddenly someone knocked on his door. Yuan opened his door holding his pipe and saw an old man waiting for him outside. The old man wore a classic jacket and had a scar on his lower cheek.

"Hehe yuan you have job today don't disappoint me" the old man said sternly. Yuan flinched from fear and went to his side. They walked to an abandoned mansion.

As they entered the mansion, yuan saw other kids just like him. He knew that his job is meant to be competitive but who cares if the money is in his bag and he can live freely.

"To everyone of you standing here your job is to bring me the meat, bones, or the body of an undead. If you realize it this is your prize."

The old man said showing a pile of money. "what you have in front of you is 50000 Durth I hope you can help me to get it for me." He said smiling.

The other kids were dreaming of having the money, nobody will willingly pay kids to do this dangerous job but for the sake of money they will kill whatever comes on their way to get this money, Yuan was also excited and really wanted to get this money.

"The deal is tomorrow make use of your items and bring me the undead" the old man said before leaving the mansion.

The children were discussing about the money they will get and how their lives will change.

"At least they are stupid enough to think that they will easily give them 50000 durth" Yuan muttered in his breath.

He went back home tired and slept on the cold floor thinking of what will happen next. "If this pendant is an artifact then maybe I will survive" yuan said before sleeping.

The night was fresh and the full moon can be seen afar in a thick dense forest. Monsters of all kinds never seen from human went out for the hunt.

Undead, ghouls, mystical creatures and others were looking at the sky full of anticipation.

"Tomorrow is the day" said an undead. "Humans are pathetic if I can say they are able to send their kind to hell just to protect the others" said a ghoul beside him.

"That doesn't matter I am seriously hungry and it's been a while I didn't eat any human" said a man with the appearance of a wolf.

"Then my fellow guest tomorrow it's my treat" a man appeared. This man was not normal his eyes were bright red when the light of the moon came to him.
