Yagami, irritated by the furious pounding on his door, frowned and shouted back.
Throwing on a piece of clothing, he walked toward the gate.

"You open this door for me!!"
Before he even reached it, the knocking struck again—angrier this time.
The voice was familiar.
"…Uchiha Eikō?"
The moment Yagami pulled open the door, seven or eight Uchiha stood outside.
And at the front—
His former promotion exam opponent, Uchiha Eikō.

He just didn't expect it to be this fast—or this loud.
"Yagami! You evil scum!"
One of the Uchiha men screamed, inventing an excuse on the spot, desperate to justify their mobbing.
Cough—!
Yagami almost choked in disbelief.
Then suddenly...
He laughed.
"You barged into my home acting like tyrants, and I'm the one in the wrong!?"
"Stop the cap!"
Uchiha Eikō, finally staggering back to his feet, wiped the blood from his mouth.
"It's YOU who slandered me everywhere! That's why I came to demand justice!"
"I slandered YOU? When did that happen?"
Yagami was speechless.
Beaten fair and square—
and now Eikō tried flipping the script.
Seeing Yagami laugh, Eikō's face darkened.
With more and more villagers crowding around, he raised his voice dramatically:
"Last week, when I lost during the Jōnin assessment, I accepted my defeat!
But you—
You went around telling everyone I was humiliated!"
The people watching the drama gasped for dramatic effect, fueling the flames.
"What? That guy beat the deputy captain of the Konoha Guard!?"
"Is the Uchiha telling the truth?"
"Who is that man? I've never heard of him."
"I know him! He buys dango from my store all the time."
"Konoha really hides monsters…"
"A commoner beat an Uchiha? Wild."

With every whisper from the crowd, Yagami's prestige soared.

Yagami froze.
He stared at Eikō's moving mouth, barely hearing a word.
He had just been harassed into gaining a pile of prestige and completing a hidden quest.

For once, he actually felt thankful for Uchiha Eikō's nonsense.
From the earlier rant, Yagami pieced things together:
Someone used his name to spread slander about Eikō—
twisting the story so the Uchiha believed Yagami was mocking him.
And that someone wanted Yagami and the Uchiha clan at each other's throats.
Only four people knew what happened during his exam:
Uchiha Eikō,
Namikaze Minato,
Sarutobi Hiruzen,
Shimura Danzo.
Minato was too straightforward to bother with scheming.
Eikō was too proud to spread rumors about his own defeat.
Which left—
Sarutobi Hiruzen and Danzo.
Both had friction with the Uchiha clan…
but only one of them had reason to target Yagami too.
Danzo.
This reeked of Danzo's handiwork.
As for whether Hiruzen knew?
Maybe.
But even if he did… it wouldn't change anything.
