Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Test

"Sigh~" Peter sat on a rooftop, feeling the wind, his heart somewhat depressed.

He had thought his first rescue attempt would be perfect, but he ended up causing a truck to crash into a restaurant. Thankfully, no one was inside.

"I need to go back, or Aunt May and Uncle Ben will worry again." Peter composed himself and headed home.

He didn't plan to tell his family about gaining superpowers. Even though Uncle Ben said with great power comes great responsibility, he believed that if he told his uncle and intended to help the police catch criminals, Uncle Ben would be one hundred percent against it. In his uncle's eyes, Peter would always be the child who never grew up.

Silas, on the other hand, was constantly hiding in the shadows. He worried Peter would run into danger, even if it was highly unlikely.

"Keep going, Peter. You'll grow up, or rather, we'll grow up together," Silas smiled, leaning against a wall.

For his family's safety, he knew he had to strive to acquire more Justice Points and Evil Points, which would give him a better foundation.

Just as the Parker family was preparing for bed, the windows of Peter's and Silas's rooms opened simultaneously.

"Hmm?"

"Hmm?"

Silas and Peter poked their heads out, staring at each other.

Because Silas's room was right next to Peter's, when Silas opened his window, he could easily see Peter.

"Peter, what are you getting ready to do?" Silas asked, forcing a calm expression.

"Uh..." Peter tapped the window frame, not knowing what to say.

Peter quickly changed the subject. "What about you, Silas? What are you doing?"

"I opened the window to get some air. The room is quite stuffy," Silas had already prepared his excuse.

Peter quickly followed suit. "What a coincidence, so am I! The night looks great tonight. Goodnight, Silas."

After rushing out the words, Peter retracted his head. Silas just smiled. It really was quite a coincidence.

He could guess what Peter was about to do.

Silas didn't hesitate, leaping out the window and leaving the room. A ninja's movements are soundless.

It was about ten minutes later that Peter's head peeked out again.

Peter crept to Silas's window and carefully looked in, spotting 'Silas' resting on the bed.

"Phew~" Peter sighed in relief, seeing Silas asleep, and then left the area.

After Peter departed, the person on the bed opened his crimson eyes, which shone brightly in the darkness.

Elsewhere

Silas stood high atop a skyscraper, looking below for anyone who needed help, when he unexpectedly spotted someone.

Iron Man! Tony Stark!

Tony seemed to have just finished something and was flying through the air toward Stark Tower.

When Silas saw Tony, he involuntarily turned his body away, feeling guilty since he still possessed Tony's Mark II Arc Reactor.

Just then, a shout came from Silas's left.

"Woohoo!" Peter swung past Silas's left side. However, due to the block of a building, he didn't notice Silas in the darkness.

Peter's shout, though, attracted Tony's attention.

Tony suddenly stopped and looked toward Peter in the distance. "Pajama baby?"

"J.A.R.V.I.S., keep an eye on him," Tony said, suddenly interested in Peter.

"Affirmative, sir," J.A.R.V.I.S. replied.

Peter had no idea that his shout had attracted the attention of two different people.

At that moment, Peter spotted a car thief below.

"Spider-Man is here!" Peter suddenly dropped down, landing right in front of the thief.

The thief was startled by Peter's sudden appearance. "Where did you come from, kid! Get lost!"

"My name is Spider-Man. Say, are you stealing a car?" Peter asked, looking at the crowbar in the thief's right hand.

The thief looked around and found no one else nearby. He raised the crowbar and swung it at Peter. "I told you to mind your own business, kid!"

Peter easily dodged the blow. "Oh~ Looks like you'll be spending some time at the police station today."

Thwip!

Peter shot a web, sticking the thief entirely to the wall behind him. "Little kids shouldn't play with crowbars. Confiscated."

Saying this, he took the crowbar from the thief and tossed it onto the ground.

"F***!" the thief cursed painfully. Where did this freak come from, shooting out this white stuff?

Peter, without another word, covered the thief's mouth with webbing. "And little kids shouldn't use bad words, either! Alright! Time to go! Remember, my name is Spider-Man!"

Peter shot a web and swung away. As he passed a pair of patrolling police officers, he shouted, "First corner ahead! There's a car thief there. Go catch him, and you're welcome! My name is Spider-Man!"

Peter's voice left the two police officers confused, but they raised their pistols and cautiously walked toward the first corner.

Using their flashlights, they illuminated the thief stuck to the wall. The thief squinted against the light and saw the police. "Oh~ no~"

"Cool!" Peter watched from above as the police handcuffed the thief, doing an excited backflip.

Finally having done a good deed, Peter prepared to continue his efforts.

"Hey! Take this!"

Peter quickly turned his head, seeing a fist flying toward him.

Peter instantly spun, dodging the blow, but his foot slipped, and he tumbled downward.

Fortunately, Peter reacted quickly enough to shoot a web and pull himself back up.

"Hey, pal, why are you attacking me?" Peter finally got a clear look at his attacker: a masked figure wearing a black costume.

The attacker was, naturally, Silas.

"Wait a minute!" Peter scratched his head. "Aren't you the one who saved Uncle Ben last time?"

Silas didn't answer. The more he spoke, the more likely he was to expose himself. He had lived with Peter for over a decade and knew him well.

"Why aren't you saying anything?" Peter asked while dodging Silas's attacks.

Silas's speed was very fast, and Peter had to exert all his strength just to narrowly avoid the attacks. He held back from counter-attacking because the black costume looked exactly like the one Uncle Ben had described.

"Is there some misunderstanding between us?"

Peter took advantage of a gap, leaped to a far-off wall, and put some distance between himself and Silas.

"Not bad~" Silas thought to himself. Peter had only recently gained his powers, and his performance was already quite good.

As for Silas himself, having the power of the Shadowkhan forces allowed him to utilize the spider powers more quickly and flexibly.

"Alright, we should just calm down and talk this through," Peter continued chattering.

Silas stopped attacking, turned around, and left. He had simply wanted to test Peter. Now that the test was complete, he retreated.

"Hey! Wait!" Peter tried to call out to the man in black, but the figure left without looking back.

"Uh..." Peter scratched his head. "What was that all about?"

"So he just came to hit me once and then left." Peter was completely bewildered. Oh well. The night is still young, and I still have work to do.

In a Laboratory Unknown to Anyone

A person in a white lab coat was busy researching an object. His right sleeve was empty.

"Almost, almost! It's almost finished!"
