Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 Root Ninja

"The day you want will come sooner or later."

Kawaze didn't step back. Instead, he moved forward, lifting Tsunade's chin with his right hand.

The two of them locked eyes for a moment. Tsunade looked at the handsome face just inches away, and the corner of her mouth revealed a faint, almost invisible smile.

Her face flushed. She turned her head away and spoke softly.

"Kawaze-kun… I'm hungry."

Seishu was stunned, mouth hanging open. Is this really my sister?

She must have been possessed by some kind of evil creature.

"Hahaha, come on, Seishu, let's go eat."

Kawaze laughed, threw his arm around his brother-in-law's shoulders, and headed straight toward the restaurant without caring whether Seishu agreed or not.

Tsunade walked behind them with her head lowered. Who knew what she was thinking?

Meanwhile, in a secret underground chamber somewhere in Konohagakure…

The dark room was spacious, with only a single seat placed in the center.

A middle-aged man sat upright in the chair, an X-shaped scar on his chin, a ruthless glint in his eyes.

Beneath him, a masked shinobi knelt on one knee.

"Sir, the land for the Hatake family's third generation has been approved."

"As expected, Hiruzen Sarutobi never makes things easy for me."

But he underestimated me.

"This may actually be a good thing. Proceed as planned."

The man above waved his hand, and the shinobi below sprang to his feet and vanished on the spot.

"Hiruzen… I will become Hokage."

As he spoke, the man stood up, fists clenched, expression fierce.

Back at the Hatake household, where Kawaze was currently eating, he had no idea that trouble had begun even before the hospital was built.

The five people at the table were eating with great enthusiasm. Kawaze had raised the Hatake family's hosting standards by several levels at least.

"This is potstickers.""This is a chive pie.""And this is brown-sugar steamed cake."…

Tsunade and Nawaki were like Grandma Liu entering the Grand View Garden—completely overwhelmed. After this first visit, the siblings had already made up their minds:

From now on, whenever they had time, they would never miss breakfast at the Hatake house.

"Seishu, slow down, you'll choke."

Watching Seishu roll his eyes while stuffing steamed cake into his mouth, Kawaze quickly poured him a glass of pure milk. This level of life quality… truly unparalleled.

Tsunade glanced at her useless brother, too ashamed to bother with him, and quietly continued eating her chive dumplings. They were simply too good.

After breakfast, Tsunade got up to leave. There were still many things she needed to handle concerning the new hospital, and aside from money, Kawaze didn't seem capable of helping with anything else.

In the dojo, Nawaki resumed practicing his horse stance and basic sword techniques.

Kawaze began walking back and forth between the stone table and the large tree, seemingly replaying the events of yesterday.

Suddenly, both Shigeru and Kawaze raised their heads toward a corner of the training hall.

"Who?"

Kawaze moved faster. Just as he threw the Octagonal Cold Sword, the intruder arrived.

In the corner, a masked shinobi stood frozen, an octagonal sword hanging from his neck.

The murderous aura and the bone-chilling cold of the blade made him too terrified to move.

Sweat instantly soaked the face beneath the mask.

Shigeru arrived a few seconds later.

Nadeshiko and Kikyo stood beside Nawaki. All around the Hatake compound, young warriors appeared one after another, swords at the ready, faces tense.

"Who sent you?"

Kawaze applied pressure, the tip of the sword leaving a bloody scratch on the man's neck. Blood trickled down into his collar.

"Lord Danzo told me to deliver this to you."

Suppressing his fear, the Root operative took out a letter and handed it to Kawaze.

Shigeru understood everything from his brother's eyes.

"A Root member?"

Kawaze's tone was hard, his killing intent undisguised. He hadn't expected Danzo to lose patience and reveal himself this quickly.

"Yes… the message has been delivered. You may kill me as you please—or disgrace my corpse."

"Danzo is good at that."

"In that case… when you reach the underworld, don't blame me."

With one swing, Kawaze slit the man's throat and walked away without looking back.

"We're cleaning up. No need for you to help."

"What kind of people are allowed into the Hatake family's back garden?"

Despite killing someone, Kawaze felt unsatisfied. Is this what becomes of the warriors he spent so much money raising?

"All sentries—hidden and visible—are to report to the shrine for punishment. If this happens again, the consequences will be severe."

Shigeru looked at the corpse lying in a pool of blood, frowned, handed the envelope to his brother, and left in a hurry.

"Yes, Second Young Master."

Upon closer look, these warriors were all teenagers, the oldest barely in his early twenties. All were orphans Kawaze had taken in.

Each possessed different talents. They excelled at guarding the household, but they still couldn't withstand a specialized organization like Root.

"It's fine. Just keep training."

Kawaze approached Seishu, patting him on the head to comfort his brother-in-law.

Seishu hadn't seen the killing blow, but he clearly saw the corpse being carried away.

Even now, Kawaze still exuded a charming yet terrifying killing aura. For the first time, Seishu saw another side of the man.

He was far from the cheerful, sunny person he imagined—not everyone was qualified to enjoy his smile.

Looking at Kawaze's handsome smile, Seishu also smiled. Fortunately, this man might one day become his brother-in-law.

Once calm, he resumed practicing swordsmanship. Someday, he would no longer be the child who had to hide behind women.

"Kawaze, are you alright?"

Nayuki walked over to talk to him, while Gakō wandered off a bit—the dog's senses were sharper than Seishu's.

"It's fine. Matters like this are too much for small fry like you."

Hearing Kawaze's answer, Nayuki left with Gakō.

Holding the envelope, Kawaze sat beside the stone table. Servants were already serving tea.

He opened the letter and took a sip of tea.

The more he read, the more ridiculous it seemed.

Shimura Danzo invited him to meet at a bar, claiming there was something important to discuss.

Only Danzo would disregard his own subordinate's life just to send a message.

At that moment, Shigeru returned from somewhere and sat across from Kawaze.

"How did you punish them?"

"Twelve people. Twenty lashes each, and three months' pay deducted."

"After they recover, six more months of training."

Shigeru sipped his tea. Those warriors were trained by their family. If their strength wasn't enough, they simply had to keep training.

Otherwise, today's leniency would become tomorrow's rot.

"It's fine. Danzo wants to meet me."

Kawaze didn't object to the punishments. He ate what he liked, drank what he liked, and earned a high salary every month—a far better life than being a shinobi.

"If he wants to see me, then let him. Does he think my family is made up of stray dogs on the street?"

Shigeru was equally annoyed. Why sneak someone in just to deliver a letter?

"We should listen to big brother. What's the harm in leaving him alone?"

Kawaze had already made up his mind. He had three guesses about what Danzo wanted, but he didn't know how far Danzo's ambition went.

He laughed, holding the envelope and the letter.

When he opened it again, all that remained inside was a pile of ashes.
