Chapter 24 - Secrets of the Spirit Continent

Something akin to a missile streaked through the sky, heading straight toward the old man.

As if it had eyes of its own, it curved mid-air and latched onto him.

The old man was shocked and furious at the same time.

Hurriedly halting his attack, he immediately tried to defend against the missile.

Bang!

Just as the missile collided with him, he hadn't even been able to catch his breath when another missile slammed into him again.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Immediately, he was bombarded by multiple missiles…

After more than ten attacks, it finally stopped.

A gust of wind blew a few moments later, revealing the state of the old man.

He was now… unrecognizable.

His face had been blasted open, revealing parts of his brain, and his chest had exploded, exposing the wriggling veins beneath.

The old man let out a growl, his empty head staring at the spaceship as he released a strange roar toward the skies.

A voice came from a mic and echoed into Sunless and Jane's ears.

"Get away from him, he's about to self-destruct."

Hearing the words, Sunless felt an unprecedented sense of danger.

Immediately, his consciousness swept through the man at lightning speed, picking up all the attributes he had dropped before quickly distancing himself from the location.

Jane also retreated to more than thirty meters away from the old man.

Bang!

The creature's body swelled repeatedly, expanding like a balloon before exploding and spraying fragments of its body all around.

Then, a blue light coalesced and formed into something akin to a scroll…

"No one's allowed to move…" the voice from the communicator spread throughout the surroundings before the sound of the battleship opening echoed.

Then, a calm young man with striking blonde hair stepped out from the ship.

He scanned the surroundings before jumping mid-air.

Swoosh…

He plummeted at lightning speed before finally colliding with the ground.

The next instant, he raised his gaze and scanned everyone…

Seeing that no one dared approach, he bent down and picked up the scroll before opening it.

Glancing through its contents, he shook his head in disappointment and crushed it, causing it to disintegrate.

"Just a useless adept fire martial technique… we have countless of those…"

After he finished mumbling, he turned in Sunless' direction, and a look of recognition flashed in his eyes.

"Hey, kiddo. What's your name?"

Sunless glanced around to be sure it was him the youth was talking to.

His piercing blue eyes bore into Sunless with a penetrating look.

"It's you I'm talking to, no need to glance around," the man said with slight anger.

Sunless let out a breath before replying…

"My name is Sunless."

The young man seemed stunned. He rubbed his lightly trimmed beard in deep thought…

"Sunless? That's a strange name… what's up with the name?" he asked curiously.

The name sounded like something an extremely strange entity he had only heard about from the Spirit Continent would give.

It was said that the entity was particularly obsessed with the sun…

'They can't be related…' the youth shook his head, completely dismissing the thought.

"I don't know," Sunless replied casually. "I've had the name ever since. I think it suits me."

"Suits you, huh?" the youth said, then shook his head with a laugh. "The name's Daniel, you must have heard it from this old demon, right?"

Sunless nodded and stared at Daniel curiously.

"What's a demon?"

Daniel was stumped by the question.

He stared at Sunless like he was an idiot.

How could he not know what a demon was? Who didn't know what a demon was???

He searched Sunless' face for any signs that he was joking, only to be shocked to discover that Sunless truly didn't know the meaning of a demon!

"Do you live under a rock or something?" Daniel muttered, shaking his head with a chuckle.

"Either way, I'm in a good mood after completing my mission, so I'll answer your question."

Sunless raised a brow, his interest piqued.

"You know about the Spirit Continent, right?"

Sunless nodded.

"Then you'd know that the Spirit Continent is where humanity increases its strength and thrives, right?"

Sunless paused slightly, then nodded.

Although he hadn't been told this directly, he had already figured it out.

Daniel sighed, his gaze turning serious.

"In the Spirit Continent, not only do humans struggle for resources, but demons, elves, primitives, and many other races aim to stand at the top."

Noticing Sunless' shock, he sighed once more before explaining…

"Honestly… we're only managing to survive so far because we've barely explored ten percent of the Spirit Continent. Other races have been exploring it for thousands of years, so they're far ahead of us."

"Only because their powerhouses don't bother dealing with us are we still alive…" His words caused Sunless' expression to change drastically.

Sunless' heart shook as he couldn't believe what he was hearing.

All this time, he thought humanity would have at least made something of themselves in the Spirit Continent, but to think this was the hidden truth?

Sunless felt as though a massive secret had been revealed to him.

Subconsciously, the weight he felt increased exponentially.

In order to protect his sister, to protect himself…

He would have to topple them all…

Explore the depths of the Spirit Continent… become the strongest being… become the strongest god, and bring peace to his and his sister's lives…

'At the depths of the Spirit Continent, could that be where the gods reside?' Sunless guessed silently.

"Have you heard any rumors of what might be in the depths of the Spirit Continent? The innermost region?"

Sunless asked curiously.

A hint of anticipation appeared in Daniel's eyes as he glanced at Sunless before shaking his head.

"Nothing is known about them, aside from the fact that they've likely lived for more than a million years."

A million years!

The astronomical number filled Sunless' heart with terror.

He had only lived for a few decades and thought that was long enough…

What was the concept of living for a million years…

Cultivating for a million years, just what heights could one have achieved?

Could they move the stars and control the world while having nothing to fear?
