Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Xiaogang—“I Want the Golden Scale Beast”

Chapter 24: Xiaogang—"I Want the Golden Scale Beast"

The Asura God's move did not escape the notice of Huo Yuhao, watching from his Eternal Temple in the Divine Realm.

That beam of crimson light carried a fragment of the Asura God's divine consciousness—a genuine domain of the Killing God, infinitely superior to the diluted "monkey versions" later granted to Hu Liena and Bibi Dong.

And indeed, in the original history, how had Tang Hao, a mere ninety‑fifth‑rank Spirit Master, dared storm the Spirit Hall and challenge multiple Titled Douluo single‑handedly? His confidence came directly from this domain. Cheating divinity had its perks.

Huo Yuhao calmly recorded the act through his Eternal Eye, filing it away as evidence to be used later.

"Old Shura," he murmured with a smile, "you break the rules, and I break them too. Let's see who catches whose weakness first."

Five years later, Tang Xiao had not wasted time—his cultivation had already reached the seventy‑second level, a Soul Saint. Tang Hao, however, having spent those years within the City of Slaughter, was only level fifty‑eight, a mere Soul King. The disparity planted a lasting gap between the brothers.

Of the twin stars once praised by the heavens, one now shone under the Asura God's favor, while the other had already been forgotten.

Upon his return, Tang Hao spent months calming the murderous aura that clung to him. Tang Xiao, who had considered venturing to the City of Slaughter himself, abandoned the thought. When he saw his brother return, a strange emptiness welled within him—a sense of loss, as though a fateful chance had passed him by.

He never understood what he had missed, but the regret gnawed at him all the same. Forcing a grin, he said, "Brother Hao, since you're back, shall we travel the continent together? Your strength must be close to level sixty—perhaps you'll gain a new spirit ring along the way."

Tang Hao nodded. "Alright, Brother."

The two brothers set off. In the months that followed, Tang Hao's cultivation soared rapidly, and soon he caught up. Within two months, after slaying several ten‑thousand‑year beasts, he completed his sixth ring.

Meanwhile, back in the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect, Yu Xiaogang finally broke through to level ten.

For most, this was trivial—but for him, it was a milestone. Even though his despised half‑brother Yu Xiaomen had already reached level twenty‑six, at least now Yu Xiaogang could stand tall as a potential Spirit Master. Once he acquired his first ring, he'd no longer be among the powerless commoners he had always looked down upon.

"Tomorrow, I'll take you to hunt your first ring," Yu Yuanzhen said. "Have you chosen a target?"

"Of course," Yu Xiaogang said, eyes alight. "I want the Golden Scale Beast."

"The Golden Scale Beast?"

"Yes," Yu Xiaogang explained eagerly. "When our sect's last Golden Saint Dragon Titled Douluo forged his path, his first spirit ring was from a 415‑year Golden Scale Beast. I'll follow his example and take one as well."

Yu Yuanzhen nodded approvingly. "A fine choice. A Golden Scale Beast is a top‑tier beast of the light attribute. Absorbing its ring should stimulate your Luo Sanpao's bloodline. Even if it doesn't evolve into the Golden Holy Dragon, it will at least strengthen the lineage. Rest well tonight—I'll take you to the Star Dou Forest tomorrow."

"Yes, Father."

That night, Yu Xiaogang could barely contain his excitement. He dreamt of success—of slaying a 420‑year Golden Scale Beast and fusing its ring. In his dream, his Luo Sanpao transformed into the resplendent Golden Holy Dragon. His talent soared, surpassing even Yu Xiaomen's. Years later, crowned as the Dragon God Douluo, he stood triumphant, crushing his brother beneath his heel.

"Yu Xiaomen," dream‑Xiaogang sneered, "back then, I only let you go first. Now that I've completed my Golden Dragon, you're the waste!"

He awoke the next morning to the snorts of his Luo Sanpao echoing beside the bed.

Father and son entered the depths of the Star Dou Forest. With a Titled Douluo protecting him, danger was minimal. After three days of searching, they finally found their target—a 360‑year‑old Golden Scale Beast.

The creature gleamed with metallic luster, armored scales reflecting brilliant gold. Yu Xiaogang frowned. "Only 360 years? I thought it would be over four hundred."

Yu Yuanzhen sighed. "A Golden Scale Beast isn't just any soul beast—it's among the elite. Its rings are far harder to absorb. Be sure you can handle the strain." His discerning gaze clearly said: Four hundred years? You? Don't overestimate yourself.

"Fine. Three hundred will do."

He plunged a dagger into the creature's neck, dragging forth its ring, and began the absorption process.

Within minutes, sweat drenched his face. Agonizing energy surged through his veins, tearing his body apart.

"It hurts… it hurts!" he gasped.

"Calm your heart," Yu Yuanzhen instructed. "This pain is temporary. Endure it, and you will gain lifelong power."

But Yu Xiaogang's resolve shattered. "No! I can't! Father, stop it! Help me! It hurts—I can't take it anymore!"

The Titled Douluo watched in disappointment. The ring was well within his son's limit, but the boy's will was brittle. Even if he forced the process now, it might cripple him. He sighed and struck lightly, dissipating the ring's energy.

Yu Xiaogang collapsed, panting. "It's over… thank the heavens."

Yu Yuanzhen remained silent.

Hours later, he found another—a 256‑year Golden Scale Beast—and presented it. "How about this one?"

But Yu Xiaogang's eyes trembled the moment he saw the golden creature. The memory of pain gripped him like a nightmare.

"Father," he murmured, "maybe… we should pick another beast."

Yu Yuanzhen's voice turned cold. "You're sure? No more Golden Scale Beasts?"

"I'm sure."

"Very well. What do you want, then?"

As fate would have it, a spark of lightning flashed through the trees. A small creature scurried by, its body crackling with electricity. Yu Xiaogang's eyes lit up. He pointed immediately.

"That one!"

"You mean… the Thunder Skunk?"
