Chapter 13 - 010: outside

"Professor Kastner. How are people surviving outside?" Dr. Vogt asked

Professor Kastner(No. 4) continued, "The information we've gathered from our communications in the last three weeks mostly consists of descriptions of how the outside landscape has evolved during the six months. Based on what we know, to put it clearly, while some of us might be capable of surviving outside, I doubt many would choose to."

"Please go on." Dr. Lothar Eckstein said.

Professor Kastner continued, "I'd rather not."

Dr. Vogt proceeded with the meeting, "Also attending today is Professor Herta Wolter with some news."

Dr. Wolter(No. 11) announced, "Firstly, I'm pleased to announce that my capable student, Abi Gorman, has successfully graduated and is ready to serve as a water engineer. He will begin his first solo shift tomorrow, so let's celebrate this good news for him. As for the rest, Let's let Abi deliver Is the good news."

Abi(12) continued, "So, we've successfully restored the damaged filters from last week's explosion. Additionally, we've devised a plan to repair the secondary water system which would enable full use of the gym saunas and heated water in all bathrooms. The plan involves sending a team outside to the water purification and distribution station located in the middle of the residential city. The team will examine and determine any existing problems and address those issues directly and implement necessary repairs."

Dr. Vogt commented, "So, there are people going outside?"

Abi replied, "Yes, a somewhat professional team, yes."

Dr. Vogt asked, "And it's safe to go out there?"

"Well, it's not ideal."Abi answered, "It's challenging, but it's been proven survivable. A well-prepared team can manage. They will be equipped with protective gear and necessary equipment as needed."

Dr. Vogt continued, "And our last speaker currently is Dr. Arthur Baumann. He is a chemist."

Dr. Baumann(13) said, "Indeed, research conducted in our labs has concluded that within less than a year, the atmosphere outside the shelter will no longer support human life. Radiation levels monitored by our sensors on the exterior of the building have shown a consistent, gradual rise over the past six months, affecting the atomic structure of the air."

Charlotte Ziegler(14) interrupted, asking, "And how are people still living outside?"

Dr. Baumann clarified, "The radiation levels are not yet lethal, but with this linear increase, they will become so in nine months."

Dr. Vogt intervened, "Well, that wraps it up for today. I hope you found it informative and tune in for the next meeting." He turned off the recorder and turned to Dr. Baumann, "this is only your number two meeting. And evidently, it is a number two so, Let me explain how we do things here. We don't disclose such information to the people. Serious matters should only be discussed after the recording stops. Understood?"

Dr. Baumann nodded, "sure, why not?"
