Chapter 14 - 011: choice

After Dr. Vogt left the armory to edit the recording of the meeting, mia cline spoke to the current attendees, "I'll be the first to speak. As all of you probably know, our project was showing promising results over the past month, but due to recent complications, I don't know if there's an easy way to say this, but... we fucked up."

Upon hearing this, Dr. Lothar Eckstein left the meeting, saying, "Okay, I'm not sober enough for this. Tell me in the next one."

After he left, Anneli Dieter asked, "What do you mean, 'fucked up'? What exactly happened?"

Mia replied, "I mean, we failed. The project failed."

"After all the resources it took" Dr. Wolter said, almost in disbelief, "it just failed?"

"Unfortunately." Mia responded, "And all we can do right now is learn from the mistakes of the past and focus on moving forward with new solutions."

"Of course you'd say that." Herta said to mia, somewhat accusing, "It's not like you're gonna admit you were wrong."

Mia replied, "I am admitting that I was wrong. Both Dr. Baumann and I take full responsibili..."

Before mia could finish, Anneli interrupted, "How much did it cost us?"

Dr. Baumann answered, "About nine weeks, which was all taken from the supply of the closed section."

Mia then followed, "It's a price we all agreed to pay. We all knew the risks before starting this, and the fact that it didn't work out doesn't make it a waste."

"But still, it was your idea. You two should take the blame for it.", herta said.

"And we do." Mia replied.

Dr. Erdmann Warner intervened, saying, "Stop. Both of you. All of us share the burden, just like all of us agreed to go with it months ago, it was a crazy plan, and it failed. Stating that many times won't make it better."

"We've lost many many weeks on the last few 'plans'. We've got less than five months left. From now on, we need to be careful," said Charlotte Ziegler.

Erdmann responded, "Just like we came up the previous potential solutions, we'll come up with another. We're visionaries. That's what we do,"

"That's a very good speech and all," Alina post told him "but we're in a shaky position right now. So, it would be helpful if we cut down on the motivational quotes,"

"Yeah, you really sound like a life coach right now." Wagner said.

Erdmann glanced sideways "Why are you even talking? You're not a scientist."

"Don't need a degree to know I'm smarter than you,"

Warner

"But I am better looking. That's why you don't get no bitches."

"can we not do this today?" said Anneli Dieter, "please."

"Let's just focus on the situation at hand, shall we?" Prof. Kastner added.

Dr. Baumann spoke "For some time, we've been thinking of solutions we would like to discuss with you,"

"We also have a potential fix that came to our mind a few days ago," Anneli said.

"You should go first," said Dr. Wolter to Dr. Baumann. "Since it was you who fucked up."

Baumann continued "So, we know that the environment outside is not suitable in the long run, and that the supplies we have right now are just enough for another few months. But, the building's facilities are built to last hundreds of years. If we could make sure that, after five years, some of us are still alive, then our race will survive,"

"I am not sure I like where this is going," said Charlotte Ziegler in the midst of his pause.

"Yeah, me too," followed Reiner Kastner.

Dr. Baumann continued "All of you know that we're the only ones needed to run the building, absent or not. Only us, the members of this council, are actually needed. The rest are just... kinda there, existing for no purpose. My premise is that the supplies will only last us five months, but for 8% of us, it could last the full five years, even more. So, what I'm suggesting is..."

"A genocide?!" interrupted Charlotte.
