Chapter 13 - ancient memories

Now that their lives were in someone else's hands and escaping was impossible, Riven thought he should show some personality. Who knows, it might spark some interest.

Lan and Farrdin were too scared to even notice that normally, Canis would never speak like that.

Hearing this, Kamis was a bit confused. He didn't expect a guy who was merely a paltry lv 15 to dare expose his dramatic act.

Coughing lightly twice, Kamis looked around. He was immediately drawn to Riven, but then realizing something, he looked at Riven and smiled.

Riven noticed Kamis's gaze and understood that he might have realized Riven was controlling this priest's body.

"Hello, sir descendant of some great god. Someone as noble as you surely wouldn't nitpick over my unintentional words, right?"

Hearing this, Kamis laughed loudly, as if he hadn't laughed in ages. Like a person who had been in solitary confinement for 20 years and then came out, finding even a normal sentence interesting and novel.

Seeing Kamis's reaction, Farrdin regained his senses, looking worriedly at Canis.

He was a worshiper of the god of light and creation. Was that why, upon hearing this man was a descendant of the god of darkness, he forgot the current situation and teased him?

After all, these were the two most powerful ancient gods with a deep-seated blood feud. Their war had created this cave of creation.

The two forces dominating the current world were the descendants of these gods: the Nocturne and Cetera families. Wasn't Canis seeking death? If he wanted to die, he shouldn't drag them along.

"Don't worry, i died a long time ago. This is just a skill linked to this place, creating a phantom with my memories and personality."

Seeing that everyone seemed skeptical, Kamis pointed inside the barrier, smiling.

"Don't believe me? My corpse is inside there. Thanks to the vitality from this pile of heavenly heart wood, it's still intact and hasn't rotted."

All three found this very bizarre. Why was the fact that he was dead and his corpse was intact something to brag about?

At first, Kamis's image in their eyes was very profound, but now he seemed like a child lacking affection and craving interaction.

Currently, too many strange things were happening: Canis's arm growing back, a pocket world, a powerful being with an abnormal personality.

It made Farrdin feel overloaded. Too many abnormal things had happened, so he started considering them normal. He guessed that if he walked into the barrier and saw a rat hiding under a chef's hat cooking, he wouldn't find it strange either.

"Excuse me, earlier you mentioned 'karma bearer'. What does that mean? When we entered here, did we get entangled in some karma?"

Although Kamis appeared very friendly, Lan still didn't dare to be disrespectful to a powerhouse from 200 million years ago, even if it was just a projection.

"Don't worry, girl. That's just a name i made up to call the first people to arrive here, karma bearer. After all, i'm very lonely. You know, i have the soul of a poet."

After speaking, he rubbed two fake tears rolling down his cheeks, then looked into the distance as if piercing through the fog of history. The wind blowing up from the cliff below made his hair flutter in the wind, looking very beautiful.

The other two could be easily fooled, but naturally, Riven was not. Although he had many questions, he finally chose the one he wanted to ask the most.

"So what is the trial? We are in a hurry. We need the heavenly heart wood to save someone."

"Don't worry, the only trial was opening the metal gate. If you opened it successfully, it means you are worthy. The golem was just a filter to prevent anyone too trashy from opening the door."

Having said that, he pointed to the barrier behind him.

"Go through. Everything inside is yours."

Seeing this, the three looked at each other and nodded. Farrdin took the lead to probe for danger.

When he touched the barrier, a mechanical sound rang out from all directions.

"Are you afraid of death? If you died now, would you be content? If you could choose how to die, how would you want to die?"

"Just answer truthfully, and naturally, you will pass," Kamis reminded.

Hearing this, Farrdin pondered for a while, then spoke slowly. His voice was a bit complex.

"Of course, i am very afraid of death. But i have also lived long enough. Maybe i can't compare to ancient entities, but it's enough to wear down my youthful dreams. However, if i died now, i would be very discontent."

"I live only because i fear death. i live just to exist, doing everything rationally. i have forgotten the feeling of living to the fullest like in my youth. if i could choose a way to die, i hope to die in a meaningful and heroic way."

A faint blue light emitted from his body, then Farrdin walked through the barrier easily, as if nothing was there.

The next person to enter was Lan.

"Canis, you stay out here and watch over them, since they are unconscious and can't go in."

Hearing this, Riven had to comply.

"Farrdin, remember to take a lot. save some for me later."

Hearing this, Farrdin realized there was one more "normal" thing happening: Canis seemed to be acting very much like Riven.

He turned his head to look at Kamis for an opinion. He also wanted to ask this, but now that someone else had paved the way, wasn't it better?

"Do as you please, old man."

Hearing this, Farrdin really wanted to ask who the real old man was here, but he held back.

The two slowly plucked the leaves of the heavenly heart wood. Although Kamis said they could take as much as they wanted, they understood the principle that possessing treasure is a crime.

Heavenly heart wood was a rare item that could only be sought after, not demanded. Anyone who had it would use it to save their life, not be stupid enough to sell it. Even one leaf appearing would create a storm of blood.

They only took about 18 leaves. For the five of them, 3 leaves each, plus 3 extra to save Riven, Sylvie's father, and herself.

While taking the heavenly heart wood, Lan and Farrdin saw an altar on which lay an ancient silver coffin. According to Kamis, it was highly likely that his body was inside, but they didn't dare to offend him.

When they carried the heavenly heart wood out of the barrier with Lan, Farrdin saw a shocking scene.

Too many things today had forced him to readjust his worldview.
