Before the morning light shines over the barracks the legionnaires were all waking up wearing their red uniforms and putting their shining armour making sure every piece is designed its place.
Among the new recruits was Roy he is the son of a farmer used to toil in the fields of wheat everyday like father before home and his father before him beside cultivating a life prolonging manual that his grandfather found with a corpse he just worked the land.
But unlike his siblings some wanted to become merchant, or start as an apprentice of some kind of craft and later on become a master ,monk and after proving his devotion become a priest or just like their father a farmer no he wanted something more .
Then the new baron came with his knight as he saw them he knew it he wanted to become a knight but to turn to one you needed to have aptitude but most of all to be of noble or a trusted follower of the lord.
But few days later the chamberlain castle announced they are recruiting soldier for the army and they were offering generous pay 10 copper coin per day but most importantly they were allowing them to study a warrior Manuel and if they prove their loyalty and they have aptitude they will train a knight breathing technique and that how he found himself joining the army.
So the first days he joined was a hard day for him he worn his gear which if the others to be trusted weighted more than double the usual one and they run until they feigned from exhaustion but the officers they didn't care they had to complete the assignment after came training with weapons a sword and shield like there is no tomorrow under the relentless urging of their squad leader as if they didn't complete it they will be punished with lesser food and known wanted that.
Many weeks passed since then all the legionnaires as they're called now have become accustomed to their routine of training so after gettin ready they had to make sure that their packs have everything from food to tools of which they can sit up tents ⛺ and some pointed sticks to be used as a wall or put in the found pint toward the enemy to slow and disturb their formation.
And finaly a shovel to dig trenches or used to build fort.
As for today they were tasked with going to the forest sit up a camp do drills mimicking an enemy attack then return before night.
Few minutes later as he and the platoon to which he belonged started the used to be glaring under the sun now is nothing more than a picnic to them .
Afterwards they arrived at outscert of the forest their training didn't include going deep to the forest they have just step up the camp make the perimeter secure and do while at some scouting but that's all.
Then the officers and squad leader started shouting order at them.
His scoud leader said:' our squad will be responsible to forage for some food so we will be divided to two groups one under me and the other under rick siince he used to be a hunter is that understood'.
They all anwsered:'yes sir'.
Few minutes later Roy found himself following Rick to depts of the forest he was closely watching him trying to learn a thing or two about path finding and hunting.
But later on rick seemed to notice him and started monologuing what he is doing and explaining why they're following this trajectory how to deferential between animals then he told them that they are following a deer 🦌.
Few minutes later rick said:'make no sound and take cover and be against the wind the dude is just in fron of us infantry take the flanks me and John we will try to shoot down if we miss him try to take it down with your spear'.
They all acknowledge the orders and started moving stealthier as possible.
A minute or two later they took their positions around the deer.
He saw Rick drawing the string of his bow and concentrating then "shoooo" he put it right in the deer neck.
A sight to be hauled they moved fast to load the it on their shoulders with a spear a support and they moved before some predators get a sent of the blood.
But what they didn't know they were followed by a pack of wolf 🐺.
As they returned to their camp the submitted their hunted game a half hour later their squad leader returned with few hunted rabbit 🐰.
Then they went for rest as lunch was getting prepared for the whole platoon by another squad while the other two kept guard.
But that didn't last long as a horn blow was heard signifying that enemy as attacking standing hastily they went for their gear and got their sword and shield .
Their platoon leader order squad one and two to on entrance and fourth squad to the oth entrance while Rick squad was tasked with doing a wide flanking manoeuvre as for their enemy from the look of it a pack of wolf numbering around a hundred wolf.
They put shield on shield creating a shield wall and waited for the upcoming attack.
The 'thood' the wolf stated attacking trying to bite claw or push the shields in order to get to their targets but the legionnaire training kicked in they waited and in the right moment opened a gap and stabbed then they closed the shield wall and all of that under friendly fire cover from the archers but their strength was leaving under the sheer number of the attacking wolf.
Meanwhile Roy squad was running trying to implement as fast as possible their flanking manoeuvre before their comrade buckle up under the pressure of the attack.
One quarte later the positioned themselves in triangle formation for attack and charged with archer in the middle tasked with providing cover to their flanks.
As they punched through the wolf's they wreaked havoc at same time their comrades changed from defence and attack under this pressure the first wolf stated fleeing then another then it turned a full rout but just as they taught they won a loud howl was heard sending a shiver down their spine ' howwwww'.
A giant wolf with two showed killed one of the running wolf and the routing wolf's stopped then he launched himself at the legionnaires tearing their formation apart many were wounded some light others worse.
At that moment the platoon oeader with ashield and sword at hand attacked the alpha wolf hitting him in the leg and the wolf retaliated by one of the heads tried to bite him but he bashed it with his shield then flipped to the side dodging another attack from his other head at same archers started releasing concentrated volley of arrows seeing this the alpha and also realising that he can't win without sustaining heavy injuries signalled with a howl and retreated with the rest of the wolf.
Seeing this the legionnaires cheered them the platoon leader ordered to take care of the wounded and retrieve the loot in form of wolf's pelts to give it as proof of their first battle and they returned triumphant to the barracks.
Signalling to Roy and the others that they need to train harder specifically the breathing technique.
