Chapter 12 - Peacock 2

As the dust settled from Wiz's massive spell, the final surviving peacock rose from the frost.

Its tail feathers flared dramatically.

Laser-eyes burning.

Aura blazing with pure battle intent.

Peacock-Hater Guy snarled back, eyes glowing with primal fury.

They circled each other.

The air crackled.

Every adventurer watched in frozen confusion.

Except for two.

Levi and Kyouya—both former Earthlings—slowly turned their heads toward each other with the SAME expression.

Wide eyes.

Mouths slightly open.

A single shared brain cell firing.

Both of them screamed internally:

"ARE THEY HAVING AN ANIME BATTLE?!"

Because yes.

They absolutely were.

Peacock-Hater Guy vanished.

The peacock vanished.

Only shockwaves marked their movements as they reappeared mid-air, clashing like two martial artists from a Saturday morning shounen anime.

BOOM–BOOM–BOOM!

Speed lines.

Afterimages.

Slow-motion shots.

Battle grunts.

At one point the peacock even did a spinning kick.

Levi stared, deadpan.

"…Did that bird just use Tornado Roundhouse?"

Kyouya squinted.

"No. No, that can't be— WAIT, THAT IS TORNADO ROUNDHOUSE!"

A massive shockwave blasted outward as both combatants landed on opposite tree branches—anime-style—staring each other down.

Kyouya whispered:

"This… this is peak fantasy."

Levi nodded gravely.

"…No.

This is peak Konosuba."

The peacock flicked its head.

A dramatic gust of wind blew its feathers like a hero's cape.

Peacock-Hater Guy cracked his knuckles.

Adventurers from the other parties were losing their minds.

Party C's archer:

"W-When did he learn to fight like that?!"

Party B's warrior:

"I thought he was just some guy who hated birds!!"

Party D's healer:

"WHAT CLASS IS HE?!"

Levi answered flatly:

"Still Barbarian.

He's just awakened the 'Bird Slayer Instinct.'"

Kyouya nodded like this made perfect sense.

"It's like a natural enemy reaction.

Like cats and cucumbers."

Levi pointed at the battlefield.

"No.

This is WAY more violent than cats and cucumbers."

The ground cracked as both fighters charged each other—again.

BOOOOOM!!

Trees split.

Rocks shattered.

The forest trembled.

And both Levi and Kyouya said the exact same line, at the exact same time, without meaning to:

"Yep.

Definitely an anime battle."

And then—finally—with one clean swing, the Peacock-Hater Guy sliced the Peacock's head clean off.

For a moment, everything went silent. Dust drifting…dramatic wind blowing…cinematic zoom included.

He stood there, sword lowered, breathing hard.

"My revenge," he declared, voice shaking with triumph, "has been completed."

Up in the crowd, only two people understood the sheer absurdity of what they'd just witnessed.

Levi and Kyouya, both seasoned Isekai Survivors™, stared wide-eyed.

"Wait—WAIT—did they have an ANIME BATTLE?"

Both of them screamed simultaneously in their heads.

Because of course they were.

Levi finally stepped forward, clapping his hands once like a disappointed camp counsellor.

"Okay—WAIT. Great decapitation, very emotional, ten out of ten anime revenge arc…" he said, pointing at the still-cooling Peacock corpse. "But we still have Dark Mark Eagle to deal with. And a Roc. A whole Roc. So can we please not act like we just finished the series finale?"

Kyouya nodded vigorously beside him.

"Yeah, guys, that was like Episode 12 energy. We're not done. Not even close."

The Peacock-Hater Guy blinked, as if only now remembering there were bigger, angrier birds still in the sky.

"…Ah," he said simply.

And the fight with the Roc was…

Honestly?

The least dramatic thing imaginable.

Five minutes. That was all it took. One scream, two spells, one lucky crit from Barbarian Peacock-Hater Guy, and the Roc hit the ground like an overgrown chicken dropped from a second-floor balcony.

Everyone just stood there, staring at the massive corpse in confused disappointment.

Yunyun blinked rapidly.

"W-why was our fight with the Peacock Army harder than the Roc?"

Levi crossed his arms. "Because Konosuba logic, probably."

Kyouya nodded grimly. "Yeah. The universe hates consistency."

They took care of the Eagle army…

But not in a cool, coordinated D&D-party way.

Nope.

What actually happened was:

Wiz tried to cast Inferno—a big dramatic mass-incineration spell meant to take out the whole flock.

Instead, halfway through the chant, she panicked, mispronounced two syllables, tripped on a rock, and face-planted.

The spell still went off.

Just… wildly.

A pillar of flame shot straight upward, looped around like a flaming noodle, spiralled across the sky, and then—accidentally—hit the entire Eagle army as they were swooping down in formation.

FWOOOMPH.

Every eagle instantly became perfectly roasted, evenly cooked, and weirdly crispy.

Levi blinked. "That… actually worked?"

Wiz sat up, covered in soot. "I-I meant to do that!"

Fio Gasped. "A highly efficient, controlled explosion… That's cheating!"

Yunyun poked one of the roasted birds. "Um… it looks safe to eat?"

Levi held up a wing. "Dark Mark removal first. Otherwise, it's cursed chicken."

Peacock Hater Guy, already stuffing his face: "Tasty!"

Levi: "Oh my god, he's immune to brain damage because she already has it."

A few minutes later in the Guild Hall…

Levi slapped the quest report down on the counter. "And that's everything from the request."

Luna stared at him. Then, in the paper. Then at him again.

Her expression went blank—

Her soul visibly left her body—

Then came back like it forgot its keys.

"...O…k…" Luna finally managed, voice flat.

She looked at the "report" again:

Roc was defeated in five minutes

Dark Mark Eagles: roasted, edible (after curse removal)

Peacock Army encountered (???)

One barbarian awakened his true calling

Forest mostly intact (some areas 'crispy')

No casualties (except emotional trauma)

Wiz set herself on fire twice

Laser peacocks

Luna blinked very slowly. "Levi-san… I'm… going to need you to explain the part where the peacocks were firing lasers."

Levi rubbed his face. "I wish I could."

Yunyun leaned in nervously. "They had formations too…"

Luna's eye twitched so hard it almost detached. "F-formations…"

Peacock-Hater Guy proudly slammed a giant peacock head on the counter. "I got closure!"

Luna stared at it.

Then at him.

Then at Levi.

Her brain visibly bluescreened again.

"...I need a drink," she whispered.

Levi shrugged. "Same."

Luna sat behind the counter like a woman reconsidering all her career choices.

She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Okay… the Roc… the Eagles… the Bears… I can almost accept."

Then she pointed at the massive peacock head still sitting on the table like a cursed trophy.

"But WHY was this the hardest part of the quest?!"

Levi crossed his arms. "Ask them. They evolved military strategy."

Yunyun nodded quickly. "They had spears made of feathers and laser volleys and—"

"LASERS." Luna cut her off, looking physically pained. "Why would birds shoot lasers?!"

Wiz raised her hand shyly. "T-technically, it's scientifically possible—"

"WIZ PLEASE," Luna whispered. "Not right now."

The Barbarian/Peacock-Hater Guy proudly thumped his chest.

"My vengeance was justified."

Luna stared at him. "Sir… I don't even know your name."

"My name no longer matters. For I have transcended."

He motioned dramatically. "I am… The Peacock Bane."

Luna's soul left again. Then she took a deep breath

Luna shakily opened the guild ledger.

"W-well, since the quest required clearing the Roc, Eagle swarm, Bear pack, and Peac—"

She stopped. She refused to say the word.

"The… incident." She settled for.

Levi handed over the guild stamps. "We did everything."

"Unfortunately," Wiz added.

Luna wrote rapidly, hands trembling.

"Four parties… high threat… hazard pay… danger fee… psychological damage bonus…"

She paused.

"…Laser damage surcharge—no, that's stupid—no wait maybe it's real—NO—"

She slammed a giant leather pouch on the counter.

"Here. Please. Take the 1.2 million eris."

Everyone blinked.

Kyouya leaned forward. "Isn't that… too much?"

Luna looked at him with dead eyes.

"I am trying to financially encourage all of you to NEVER bring me another quest like this again."

Levi accepted the reward. "Fair."

Wiz held up a second form. "Also, can we get compensation for the forest fire?"

Luna grabbed her head. "THERE WAS A FOREST FIRE?!?"

Levi: "Minor one."

Yunyun: "Very minor!"

Wiz: "…It was inside a clearing?"

Kyouya: "It was technically fire."

Luna sobbed into her hands.

That night, the guild was unusually lively.

Levi, Kyouya, Wiz, Yunyun, Cremea, Fio, and the three other party members sat around a giant table.

Peacock-Hater Guy drank like a man whose life's character arc had just ended.

"To victory!" he cheered.

The whole tavern awkwardly joined him:

"TO… VICTORY???"

Levi raised his cup. "To not die."

Wiz raised hers. "To proper use of Drain Touch!"

Yunyun raised hers. "To traumatised wildlife!"

Kyouya sipped politely. "To sensible teamwork."

Cremea added, "To never fight peacocks again."

Fio nodded. "Please never again."

Levi exhaled. "I still can't believe the Roc was easier."

Kyouya tapped the table. "We're Isekai guys. We should have seen it coming."

Levi nodded sagely.

"There is no logic," he said.

Wiz blinked. "Huh?"

Levi raised his cup higher.

"This world operates on Konosuba Logic."

Everyone shuddered.

In the corner, Peacock-Hater Guy wiped a tear.

"I can rest now… My story arc is complete…"

Levi leaned toward Kyouya. "Think he'll be normal now?"

Kyouya sipped his drink. "No."

Yunyun whispered, "He's gonna hunt chickens next, isn't he?"

Everyone paused.

Everyone realised she was right.

Everyone drank harder.

Levi looked at Luna as he went to her, and she looked at him. "Um sorry about all your headaches".

Luna sighed as she spoke. "Well... You're somehow the first person to apologise after a weird mission, no other adventure has done that"

Levi snorted as he spoke. "And they wonder, why you don't go on dates with them".

Luna blinked at him, caught off guard.

"W–what does that have to do with anything?" she asked, cheeks tinting just a little.

Levi shrugged casually. "Simple. Anyone with half a brain can see you're overworked. The least they could do is not make your life harder. Instead, every guy who asks you out is someone who caused half those headaches."

Luna opened her mouth… and slowly closed it.

Because he wasn't wrong.

"…I suppose that's true," she admitted softly. "Most of them don't consider how tiring it is to manage the guild. They only see me as—"

"A pretty face," Levi finished bluntly.

He stepped a little closer, voice calm and steady. "Not as a person."

Luna stared at him.

For a second, the guild noise seemed to fade away.

"…You noticed that?" she said quietly.

Levi gave a half-smirk. "What? That you're the only responsible person in this entire town? Pretty hard to miss."

Luna's ears turned red.

"That's not— I mean, I'm just doing my job," she said, flustered but clearly pleased.

Levi rubbed the back of his head. "Still. Sorry you had to deal with three forms of psychological damage today."

"That was definitely more than three," Luna muttered.

"Yeah, but…"

He gave her a small, almost boyish smile.

"I wanted to say sorry anyway."

Luna tried very hard not to show how much that meant. Her heart did a weird little flutter that she absolutely denied.

"…Thank you, Levi," she said softly. "It's… nice. Being treated like I'm human."

Levi blinked. "Well, yeah. Why wouldn't you be?"

Luna bit her lip, looked away, and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

"That's… not something I hear often."

Levi frowned. "Then I'll just have to change that."

Luna looked back up at him—eyes wide, surprised, and a little warm.

"…You will?" she asked.

Levi smirked lightly. "Yeah. Can't have my favorite guild receptionist stressed out all the time, right?"

Luna nearly choked.

"F-favorite—?!"

Levi chuckled and stepped back.

"And hey… if anyone gives you trouble, just let me know. I'll handle it."

Luna pressed a hand to her chest, cheeks glowing.

"…You're surprisingly sweet, Levi."

He shrugged.

"I have my moments."

Luna smiled at him—soft, genuine, unguarded.

"More than you think," she whispered.

Levi stood up from the counter, giving Luna one last small smile before heading back toward his party's table. Luna watched him go, unable to stop the warm flutter in her chest.

The moment he was out of earshot, she exhaled, pressing a hand over her heart.

It was beating way too fast.

She smiled to herself—soft, private, almost shy.

She had liked him from the first day he walked into the guild.

Of course she had. Half the women in Axel did.

He was handsome, polite, strangely noble for someone who hung around adventurers, and he never treated her like she was just decoration behind a counter.

At first, it was just a crush.

A harmless daydream about a polite, good-looking half-dragon swordsman.

But now?

Now she knew the truth.

That warmth she felt when he apologized.

That flutter when he smiled at her.

The way he treated her—not like a prize, not like a receptionist, but like a person who mattered.

This wasn't the shallow spark she felt before.

This was deeper.

Clearer.

Real.

"…I'm in love with him," she whispered to herself, cheeks turning pink.

She wasn't stupid.

She knew the other women in the guild had their eyes on him.

Her coworkers whispered.

Female adventurers grumbled and glared whenever he walked past her station.

They were already jealous.

But Luna straightened up, shoulders back, chin lifted.

Let them.

For the first time, she didn't care what anyone thought.

Because for the first time in a long while, she felt something that wasn't exhaustion, or frustration, or forced politeness.

She felt happy.

And she wasn't going to apologize for it.
