Chapter 6 - Joint

When Winter got back to class Mandy and Layla rushed over to her. "Spill," Mandy shook her, "Why were you with Jax Ryan?" Winter brushed a hair from her face, "You know him?" Mandy looked indignant, "Do we know him?" She laughed dramatically, "First, everyone knows everyone at Golden Academy. Second, of course we do." Winter twisted her ring, "Well if everyone knows everyone then isn't that a given." Mandy interrupted her, "Even if everyone didn't know everyone, everyone would still know Jax. He's famous for being Golden Academy's rebel and despises being in Star's potential." Layla continued, "Jax and Sam are constantly at each other's throats. They can't stand each other." Mandy leaned on Layla and yawned, "Once upon a time they were inseparable, but no one talks about that part." Several student's attention seemed to pique at the mention of Sam and Jax's former friendship. "What happened between them?" Layla's eyes narrowed, "Don't try to avoid our question with more of your own. We want to know what you were doing with Jax." Winter sighed, "He brought me to the nurse." Layla's eyes widened, "You liar. You said you were okay." Winter huffed, "I was. He wasted his time taking me there." Mandy grabbed Winter's face in her hands, "Give us details." Mandy and Layla leaned forward in their seats. "Nothing happened he just forced his help on me like some white knight. That's it." Mandy and Layla shared a look before reverting their attention back to Winter, "You are talking about Jax Ryan right?" "Is there another Jax I don't know about?" Mandy put her hand on her chin, "What I don't understand is why Jax offered to help you in the first place." Layla grinned, "Maybe it's because of the scene you caused with Coach Russo, he probably thinks you're a fellow rebel." Mandy nudged Winter's arm, "What made you stand up to her like that?" Winter shrugged, "Instinct I guess."

Cornell stomped into the classroom gracelessly. "Listen up idiots. As you know Mrs. Scrimen isn't here today, so we are going to have another joint class in the audio visual room after some announcements from the class president." He turned to the small figure next to him. "Come up here! I don't have all day." The shy, quiet looking black haired girl with charcoal eyes came to the front of the classroom. "Okay guys," she said confidently, eradicating Winter's preconceived notions of her. "We have field day and the Moonlight ball next semester. We're holding a meeting for anyone interested in sharing their ideas after school this Friday in room two o' two. Also, if there's anything you would like to eat in the cafeteria next week you should attend the meeting to provide suggestions." Winter rubbed her arm absentmindedly as Cornell coughed loudly, "Get going." A general murmur filled the classroom, "Wow class eight again?" "Yeah well, that is Mrs. Scrimen's class so it makes sense." "Why wouldn't they just let us have individual study time?" "Joint classes are annoying." "We get to breathe the same air as Sam!" "I wish I was in class eight." Winter studied the class president who was completely uninterested in socialization after finishing her announcement. Layla linked arms with Winter, "What are you looking at?" Winter cleared her throat, "The class president." Mandy linked her arm in Winter's other one, "You mean Sara?" "I thought she was shy at first." "Sara Branson. Yeah she's a little unsociable and a bit harder to approach. But she's actually really well spoken and a great leader." Winter scratched her chin, "Weird. I never get it wrong." Layla leaned in, "I meant to mention this earlier but you're strangely perceptive Winter." A coy grin grew on her face, "It's how I've always been. My mom calls me her spy." Mandy laughed, "Why?" Winter's smile dissolved into a devious smirk, "Because she could never hide anything from me growing up. Emotions, surprises, presents, secrets. No mystery gets left unsolved." Mandy and Layla shared a look. "Looks like I came to the right school for that."
