The Capital siege engineers had calculated the decay rate perfectly, but they had fundamentally underestimated the sheer, localized rot of the Dead Zone pressing against the timber.
The decay accelerated at a terrifying, exponential pace.
The moisture vanished from the roots. The dense, impenetrable wood rapidly calcified, turning into brittle, hollow husks of gray ash. It did not take hours for the structure to fail. It took seconds.
Both the Capital infantry waiting outside and the Vanguard defenders bracing inside were caught slightly off guard by the sheer violence of the collapse.
