**Chapter 713: Fractured Shadows**
**Scene 1: Sidious' Secret Hideout**
Deep beneath the underlevels of Coruscant, in a forgotten labyrinth of durasteel and shadow, Mas Amedda stood motionless. The air was thick with the acrid scent of scorched flesh and ozone. At his feet lay the body of Sly Moore, her pale Umbaran features frozen in a final expression of shock. A clean blaster bolt had burned through her chest, the wound still smoking faintly.
Amedda's blue Chagrian horns gleamed under the dim red emergency lighting. For decades he had served power—first Valorum, then Palpatine. He had played the game masterfully, helping orchestrate the transition of authority, duping Jar Jar Binks into granting emergency powers, and guiding the Republic into the Clone Wars. All for the promise of order. For the promise of a strong hand at the helm.
He had believed Palpatine reasonable. Ambitious, yes. Calculating. But ultimately a politician who understood the delicate balance of the Senate. Becoming Emperor should have been straightforward once the Separatists were dealt with. A few more emergency extensions, a few more victories, and the Republic would kneel willingly.
But then came Dagon Marek.
The Dragon had shattered everything. Victories piled upon victories. The Supreme Commander of the Republic. The new Grand Master of the Jedi Order. Clones, officers, even many Senators now looked to Marek before the Chancellor's office. Palpatine—Darth Sidious—had cut his losses. The Sith Lord had retreated into the arms of the Confederacy, abandoning his carefully built web on Coruscant.
Amedda holstered the blaster with a trembling hand. The recent raid on the Prophets of the Dark Side's hidden enclaves had been devastating. Data crystals, holorecords, names, accounts—everything had spilled into the open. Sidious' inner circle was compromised. Sly Moore had tried to silence him, to protect her master's secrets. She had failed.
Mas Amedda was a politician first and foremost. Survival demanded adaptation. With Sidious gone and Marek ascendant, it was time to make a deal.
He activated a encrypted comm link, but before he could speak, the distant whine of repulsor engines echoed through the tunnels.
**Scene 2: The Raid**
Several LAAT/i gunships descended through the industrial haze, floodlights cutting sharp beams into the darkness of the abandoned sub-levels. Republic clones in Phase II armor rappelled down alongside Mandalorian warriors in distinctive beskar. Jedi moved with them—lightsabers already ignited in disciplined formation.
"Go! Fan out! Scan everything!" a Mandalorian commander barked, his helmet modulating the order into a growl. "No one leaves this sector without clearance."
"Strange," Nhon Artu muttered, his twin green blades casting emerald light across rusted walls. The Jedi Knight swept his gaze over the unfamiliar architecture. "I've patrolled these underlevels for years. Never knew this place existed."
Beside him, Cin Drallig ignited his own green lightsaber, the weapon humming with lethal promise. "That was the point. This was a Sith nest. Move carefully."
They advanced through the winding corridors, slicing through locked blast doors and disabling automated defenses. The air grew colder, heavier with dark side residue. Clones swept rooms with blaster rifles raised, while Mandalorians planted scanner beacons.
In the central chamber, they found him.
Mas Amedda stood over Sly Moore's corpse, hands raised in surrender. His ceremonial robes were stained with sweat and blood spatter.
Cin Drallig leveled his lightsaber directly at the Chagrian's chest. "Mas Amedda. Vice Chair of the Senate. You have a great deal to explain."
Nhon Artu stepped forward, eyes hard. "Where is your master? Where is Sidious?"
Amedda swallowed, his lekku twitching. "Gone. He has abandoned Coruscant. Joined the Confederacy in full. I… I am prepared to cooperate."
The Mandalorian commander signaled the rest of the strike team. "Secure the prisoner. Bag every data crystal. Burn the rest."
**Scene 3: Jedi Council Chamber**
The Jedi Council Chamber atop the Temple was tense with heavy silence. Sunlight filtered weakly through the massive windows, but the mood inside was anything but bright. Dagon Marek sat at the head of the circular table, his durasteel mask concealing the horrific burns inflicted by his brainwashed lovers' Force lightning. The mask gave his voice a cold, distorted metallic edge that sent chills through even the most seasoned Masters.
Obi-Wan Kenobi leaned forward, beard neatly trimmed, eyes weary but determined. "We obviously should approach the Senate with this. The revelation that Chancellor Palpatine is Darth Sidious could end the war. We expose him, strip his supporters of power—"
"Are you mad?" Cin Drallig snapped, still flushed from the raid. "This could spark civil war without end. We are still reeling from Geonosis, still fighting the CIS on multiple fronts. If the public learns their Chancellor was a Sith Lord orchestrating both sides, the Republic could shatter."
Nhon Artu crossed his arms. "We obviously need a new Chancellor first. They must know he is missing by now. The power vacuum is dangerous."
Hiram, one of the newer Council members, shook his head. "We can't risk it. Which Senators would even win control? The Loyalists like Amidala and Organa? The Militarists who back Dagon's reforms? Or the Neutrals who want peace at any cost?"
"Enough. Quiet," Dagon commanded. His masked voice cut through the debate like a vibroblade. The room fell instantly silent.
All eyes turned to Mas Amedda, who stood in the center of the chamber under guard, flanked by two clones. The Chagrian looked smaller than usual—diminished.
"Mas," Dagon said, leaning forward. "Exactly how long does the Constitution allow the Chancellor to remain absent from the Senate before we lose legal maneuvering room?"
Amedda cleared his throat, voice shaky. "Normally three months maximum. But with the New Year celebrations beginning in two months and one week… there is precedent for extended absences during galactic holidays. The Senate traditionally recesses."
Dagon's masked face betrayed no emotion, but his presence in the Force was overwhelming—controlled power mixed with something darker. "The Confederacy expects their new offensive—Spear of Light—in the first week of the New Year."
A few minutes of heavy silence followed. The implications hung in the air like smoke.
"Very well," Dagon finally declared. "You will return to the Senate, Vice Chair. Announce that the Chancellor has departed on urgent personal matters to view the war effort firsthand. Emphasize continuity and stability. But make no mistake—you belong to the Jedi Order now. We say jump, you jump. We say bleed, you bleed. Consider your position secure only so long as you serve our interests."
Mas Amedda bowed deeply, horns nearly touching the floor. "Thank you. Very much. May I leave?"
Dagon nodded once. Clones escorted the Chagrian out.
**Scene 4: The Nexus Point**
Once Amedda was gone, Dagon rose from his seat. The durasteel mask gleamed coldly under the Council lights. He looked every bit the warlord he had become—Grand Master, Supreme Commander, the necessary monster the Republic needed.
"Win the war, we must," he intoned, voice distorted and resonant. "Destroy the Sith, we must. Soon this war will enter the nexus point. The Jedi Order will rise from the ashes as the Republic remains standing. The new galactic order will start soon."
He turned slowly, addressing each Council member in turn.
"Obi-Wan, your caution is noted, but idealism nearly destroyed us at Geonosis. We cannot afford blind trust in the Senate. Cin, your vigilance protected us today—continue hunting every remnant of Sidious' network. Nhon, Hiram—prepare the Temple for what comes next. The girls are recovering. The soul bond remains closed for their protection, but when they are ready, they will stand beside us stronger than before."
Dagon's gloved hand rested on the table. "Palpatine has fled to the CIS. Let him. Let him think *Spear of Light* will break us. We will use this window—Amedda's deception, the New Year recess—to consolidate. My Annihilator and the new Liberators will be ready. Kuat's political games will be dealt with. The Dragon Strategy will evolve."
He paused, the mask making his next words sound like a vow from the void itself.
"The blurred line between Jedi and Sith ends with us. We will take what works—attachment, family, ruthless efficiency—and forge something greater. The cost will be high. Blood will stain these hands further. But the galaxy will know peace under strength, not under the lies of a hidden Sith."
Dagon looked out over the sprawling city-planet of Coruscant. Somewhere out there, fleets prepared for war. Somewhere, Sidious plotted in the shadows of Serenno.
"The nexus approaches. When the Confederacy strikes, we will be ready. Victory will demand everything. And I will give it."
The Council members exchanged glances—some resolute, some uneasy, all aware that the man before them had become the Republic's greatest hope and its most dangerous evolution.
The war was far from over. But the board had shifted. And Dagon Marek, the Dragon of the Republic, held the center.
