**Chapter Interlude: Shadows of Serenno**
The ancient halls of Castle Serenno had never felt quite so oppressive. Towering obsidian pillars rose into vaulted ceilings lost in shadow, while crimson banners bearing the newly unified emblem of the Confederacy of Independent Systems hung like drying blood. Ten hours. Ten grueling hours of debate, accusations, and cold calculations. The air recyclers struggled against the thick haze of incense, cigar smoke, and the faint metallic tang of fear-sweat.
Nute Gunray leaned back in his ornately carved Neimoidian chair, his elaborate headdress slightly askew. His red eyes were heavy with exhaustion, but his mind remained sharp—sharper, perhaps, than it had been in months. Beside him, Rune Haako fidgeted with a datapad, his long fingers tapping nervously. The rest of the Separatist Council sat in a wide semicircle around the massive holotable that dominated the chamber.
Not all were present in the flesh. Archduke Poggle the Lesser of Geonosis flickered as a blue hologram, his insectoid features twisted in what might have been grief or rage—difficult to tell with Geonosians. The recent Base Delta Zero on his homeworld had left deep scars. Tikkes, the Quarren representative, also appeared via hologram from the newly secured waters of Mon Cala, his tentacles twitching with barely contained excitement at his people's fresh allegiance.
The others had made the journey: Techno Union Foreman Zona Dreon, her mechanical augmentations humming softly; Chairman San Hill of the InterGalactic Banking Clan, his elongated Muun face impassive; the new President of the Commerce Guild, Cat Miin, accompanied by her sharp-eyed Secretary Kat Meen; Magistrate Denaria Kee of the Corporate Alliance; and Po Nudo of the Hyperlink Cartel, his Skakoan features hidden behind a breath mask.
Count Dooku presided at the head of the table, regal and unyielding in his dark robes. The former Jedi's presence commanded the room even in silence.
They had already settled the most pressing organizational matters. The Confederacy's military was now truly unified. A single emblem—a stylized black sun pierced by a crimson spear—would adorn every warship, starfighter, and battle droid. High Admiral Lolouch, a grim Chiss defector, now held overall command. All private corporate fleets had been folded into the greater CIS Navy under centralized authority.
The loss of Geonosis had forced Dooku's hand. He had declared total war. Every world, every factory, every mine under Separatist control now operated at maximum capacity. No resource would be spared. No luxury would be tolerated.
"Let us move on to the final, but no less critical, issue," Dooku said, his voice smooth as polished cortosis. "The production of warships. The relevant data packets have been distributed to your pads."
Nute Gunray activated his screen. Columns of figures glowed before him. The Confederacy's naval strength was, on paper, staggering.
**CIS Navy Roster (Current):**
- 4,216 Hardcell-class transports
- 1,450 Diamond-class cruisers
- 11,927 Munificent-class frigates
- 3,422 Lucrehulk-class battleships
- 1,294 Core ships
- 4,518 Recusant-class light destroyers
- 1,995 Providence-class carriers
- 494 Wavecutter-class cruisers
- 287 Recusant-class heavy dreadnoughts
- 30 Subjugator-class heavy cruisers
- 1,500 Providence-class Dreadnoughts
- 1,900 Dauntless-class heavy cruisers
- 800 Allocator-class Star Destroyers
By contrast, Republic numbers looked almost quaint in some categories: roughly 6,500 Dreadnought-class heavy cruisers, 4,200 Acclamator-class transports, 3,181 Venator-class Star Destroyers, 97 Indomitable-class dreadnoughts, 27 Liberator-class dreadnoughts, six massive 8-kilometer Mandators, and that monstrous new 18-kilometer *Annihilator* commanded by Dagon Marek. Plus whatever secretive vessels Sienar had been feeding the Dragon.
Tikkes rose from his holographic seat, tentacles undulating. "We are ready to begin laying down the first warships immediately. The King of Mon Cala has granted us full access to one thousand slipways. Eight hundred and thirty of them can handle vessels up to two thousand meters. Our workers and materials are already en route."
Murmurs of approval rippled through the chamber. San Hill steepled his long fingers. "An impressive gain. Yet quality remains our weakness. Their ships fight harder. Their crews are better trained."
Zona Dreon's mechanical voice crackled. "We can compensate with numbers. And with the new unified command structure—"
"Not enough," Gunray interrupted, scrolling further. "We still lag badly in escorts. Twenty-five thousand Republic corvettes and frigates against our seven thousand. In a real fleet action, they will swarm us like mynocks."
Dooku raised a hand for silence. The room stilled.
"Which brings us to the heart of the matter," the Count continued. "In two months and fifteen days, we will launch a large-scale operation codenamed *Spear of Light*. The details remain classified for security reasons. But I can tell you this: the target is the Republic's Core Worlds. We intend to seize the initiative permanently and break their will to fight."
A heavy silence fell.
Nute Gunray's eyes narrowed. "Do we truly have the resources for such an audacious strike?"
Dooku smiled faintly, a cold, aristocratic expression. "Undoubtedly. We will not launch additional major offensives in the coming months. Instead, we will amass an armada the likes of which this galaxy has never seen. Billions of droids. Thousands of warships. The full industrial might of every system under our banner."
Po Nudo leaned forward, voice muffled by his mask. "And if the Republicans learn of this and strike first? Their so-called Dragon has an uncanny habit of uncovering secrets."
At the mention of Dagon Marek, several councilors shifted uncomfortably. Cat Miin's ears twitched. Even Poggle's hologram seemed to shudder.
San Hill spoke first, his voice grave. "We must address the… creature leading their forces. Dagon Marek. The reports from Geonosis are beyond disturbing. He slaughtered brainwashed Jedi like animals. Destroyed a secret Death Star project single-handedly. Wields some kind of abomination armor—Wrath Shield, they call it—that changes forms and devours energy. Some say he has tapped into powers even the Sith would fear."
Zona Dreon added, "My sources claim he performed a 'Blood Sacrifice' ritual. Drained the life from one of his own corrupted allies. And the girls—his harem of Force users—were turned against him with brain worms, yet he still saved them. What kind of monster survives Force lightning to the face and simply dons a durasteel mask to hide the burns?"
Tikkes hissed. "He is no Jedi. Not anymore. He has become something worse. A Sith Lord in all but name, yet he fights for the Republic. Grand Master of their Order while bedding half their female knights. If he discovers *Spear of Light*…"
Dooku's expression darkened. "Marek is indeed dangerous. More so than any single being has a right to be. His reforms have made the Jedi more lethal than they have been in a thousand years. Attachments. Families. Lowered standards. Hybrid training. He has created an army of fanatics loyal first to him. But he is still one man. And even the mightiest dragon can bleed."
Chairman San Hill pressed further. "There are whispers he may have touched the dark side himself. The speed of his rise, the ruthlessness… the Annihilator superweapon. If he is a new Sith, or becoming one—"
"Then he is a Sith who does not yet know his master," Dooku replied coolly. "But that is a problem for another day. Today, we focus on victory."
Dooku straightened, his presence expanding through the Force. "There is more good news. The Hapes Consortium has formally joined the Confederacy."
A stunned hush fell over the chamber.
"The Hapes?" Gunray sputtered. "The isolationists?"
"Indeed," Dooku confirmed, a note of triumph in his voice. "Their Queen Mother saw the wisdom of our cause—and the profit to be made. Their advanced shipyards and unique weapons technology will soon flood our fleets. We will receive the first shipments of their battle dragons and pulse-mass mines within weeks. This alliance shifts the naval balance dramatically."
Murmurs of excitement spread. Even Poggle clicked his mandibles in approval.
But Nute Gunray was not yet finished. He cleared his throat. "There is another matter, Count. Several senators on worlds we control—particularly in the Mid Rim—are questioning the full mobilization of planetary armed forces. They argue that our droid armies should be sufficient. Why risk organic lives when machines can die without complaint?"
Dooku's eyes flashed. "Because we have no choice, Viceroy. The Republic has placed a death warrant on every Separatist head. Dagon Marek and his Loyalist allies speak of 'justice' and 'reconciliation' in public, but their actions on Geonosis reveal the truth. They intend total extermination of our leadership and the total subjugation of every system that dared seek independence. If we rely solely on droids, we will lose the hearts of our own people. Organics must fight for their homes. This is no longer a trade dispute. It is survival."
The weight of his words settled heavily.
Then, without warning, the shadows in the far corner of the chamber deepened. A chill wind swept through the hall despite the sealed environment. Red eyes ignited in the darkness.
From the blackness stepped Darth Sidious, hooded and terrible, his wrinkled face partially obscured. Power rolled off him in waves—dark, suffocating, ancient.
All conversation died instantly. Even Dooku bowed his head slightly in deference.
"My friends," Sidious rasped, his voice like corroded silk. "You have done well. The Confederacy stands stronger than ever. Mon Cala. Hapes. The unification of your fleets. All according to plan."
He glided forward, gloved hands clasped. "But understand this: there can be no half-measures. The Jedi and their precious Republic have grown decadent, weak, and corrupt. Yet under the Dragon's leadership, they have found new teeth. They will not negotiate. They will not compromise."
Sidious's eyes burned brighter.
"Victory… or death. That is the choice before us. Before the galaxy. The Republic must fall. The Jedi must be exterminated to the last. Only then can true order rise from the ashes. Dagon Marek believes himself above the game, but he too is a pawn—whether he knows it or not. Push *Spear of Light* forward. Break their Core. Bleed them until they beg for mercy that will never come."
He raised a hand, and for a moment, phantom lightning danced between his fingers.
"Go forth and conquer. The Sith will have their revenge."
With that, the Dark Lord of the Sith melted back into the shadows as suddenly as he had appeared, leaving only an echo of malevolent laughter and a room full of shaken, yet galvanized, leaders.
Nute Gunray exhaled slowly, his hands trembling slightly beneath the table. The war had just become far more personal—and far more terrifying—than even he had imagined.
