**Chapter 714: Threads of Empire**
**Scene 1: Republic Headquarters – Supreme Commander's Quarters**
Grand Admiral Thrawn stood at attention in the dimly lit strategic chamber of Republic Headquarters. The walls were covered in holographic star charts that shifted and rotated slowly, displaying fleet movements across the galaxy. The Dragon of the Republic, Dagon Marek, sat behind a massive obsidian desk, his durasteel mask gleaming coldly under the blue tactical lighting. The mask hid the vicious burns inflicted during the Geonosis Cataclysm, but it did nothing to soften the weight of his presence.
"How soon can a couple of experienced officers from the Chiss Ascendancy arrive here?" Dagon asked, his voice distorted into a metallic rasp by the mask.
Thrawn's red eyes narrowed slightly in calculation. "A few days, given that a request has already been sent through secure channels. Why do you ask, Commander?"
Dagon leaned forward, the segmented plates of his Wrath Shield armor shifting with a soft mechanical hiss. "We have to divide and conquer. This war is going to become a true galactic war in two months' time. Therefore, I have new instructions for several key operations."
He activated a series of holoprojectors. Three distinct mission profiles materialized above the desk.
"First: a diplomatic mission to the Atrisian Commonwealth. This state lies on the other side of the Deep Core, at the junction with the Wild Territories. A virtually closed human community following an unusual cultural path, but renowned for its progressive views and technological sophistication. The Republic has made numerous attempts to resolve the issue of the Commonwealth's incorporation through diplomacy, but disagreements have always stalled progress. Military intervention was… impractical, given the region's remoteness and the Artisans' strong army and navy."
Dagon paused, his masked gaze turning toward Fleet Admiral Dittmar, who stood rigidly at the side of the table.
"Now, with the passage of the law granting full rights to clones, the matter may finally move forward. After all, the Commonwealth's army is largely composed of clones, and the Republic's previous attitude toward them has been, to put it mildly, multipolar and unregulated. Fleet Admiral Dittmar, you will lead this mission. You possess the diplomatic sway necessary to secure an alliance, plus another detail I wish to give you."
Dagon slid a small case of encrypted info crystals across the desk. Dittmar caught it smoothly and bowed.
"Yes, Commander."
"Second," Dagon continued, turning back to Thrawn. "These are routes mapped by ancient Sith explorers to vast hidden planets in the Deep Core—Byss especially. You will survey these worlds and establish bases of operations. Numerous forward bases are to be built and deployed, along with the current batch of Spaarti clone cylinders. Secure production facilities must be operational within weeks."
Thrawn accepted his own set of crystals, studying the glowing data for a moment. "It will be done."
"Third: Adumar. A temperate planet located in Wild Space. First settled by humans exiled from the Galactic Republic during the Ductavis Era. They lived in isolation for centuries and developed into several nations obsessed with blastsword fighting and starfighter combat. Skilled pilots and duelists are revered, and formal duels settle everything from disputes to entertainment. Their society maintains a rigid social hierarchy. Admiral Piett, you will deploy there and forge the alliance. Take new clone squadrons—the best pilots we have."
Piett stepped forward, receiving his crystals with a crisp salute. "Understood, sir."
Dagon deactivated the holos and stood, the full height of his armored form imposing. "In the meantime, we must disrupt enemy operations to protect the Core and Inner Rim while finishing the Outer Rim campaigns. We cannot risk the Hapes fleet adding more firepower to the CIS. Therefore, we need new technology and we need it fast."
He highlighted a new tactical overlay. "A campaign for Umbara will yield critical materials for the Republic, and their experimental shadow technology will prove extremely useful. It will also allow me to probe CIS forces in the Outer Rim directly. Prepare the orders. We move within the week."
Thrawn inclined his head, a faint glimmer of respect in his eyes. The Dragon was thinking far ahead—securing flanks, gathering allies from the unknown regions, and preparing for the storm *Spear of Light* would bring. The Chiss officer could already see the larger strategy forming: a web of alliances and hidden bases that would stretch the Confederacy thin.
**Scene 2: Senatorial Apartments – Amidala's Residence**
A pair of Senate Guards saluted in unison as they turned toward their airspeeder. Padmé Amidala's personal guard—an honorary platoon of the Naboo militia—was represented only by Captain Panaka tonight. The other Naboo security personnel were currently confined to special quarters in the House of the Five Hundred, as they accompanied her exclusively outside Coruscant, while the building itself was guarded by a special Republic service.
With a casual nod to the guards, Padmé headed for the turbolift leading to her private quarters.
"See you tomorrow, Senator," Panaka bowed.
"Good night," she muttered back as the turbolift doors closed.
It had been a challenging day. The Senate session had dragged on for nearly ten hours—a vast expanse of time filled with idle chatter and pointless grandstanding. Yet it was crucial to monitor every nuance: the slightest shift in a senator's tone could reveal their true thoughts, their factional loyalties, or hints of impending defections.
Tomorrow promised to be equally eventful, separated from this one by only a few precious hours of rest. But unlike many other nights, this evening was special. Amidala was eager to go home.
Because they were waiting for her.
As soon as she entered the apartment, she found herself swept into Anakin Skywalker's strong arms.
"Padmé!" he exclaimed, voice warm with relief. "If you only knew how tired I am of waiting for you."
"Well, forgive me," the woman replied with mock severity, allowing herself to bask in her husband's embrace. "You knew who I was when you took me as your wife. And if it comes down to it, waiting for you is much worse."
"I wouldn't say that," Anakin chuckled. He carried her effortlessly toward the couch and lowered her gently. "I was just bored and asked R2-D2 to turn on the Senate feed. I even managed to get some sleep while it was droning on." He moved to the bar, carefully pouring two glasses of wine. "What were you even talking about today?"
"Anakin, how could you not understand that?" Padmé sighed as she accepted the glass. "We're discussing the Citizenship Bill—the one that would grant Republic citizenship to all clones in the military."
"Very well. The boys well deserved it," Anakin shrugged, nearly spilling the second glass before catching it. He sat on the edge of the sofa and handed it to her.
"It's not a question of whether they deserve it or not!" Amidala sipped her drink. "The point is that every senator wants to weigh in on this issue, and what's worse, to negotiate something for themselves. The persistence with which Senators Cho and Maverick—both from the Chancellor's former party—are pushing it is alarming."
"You think there's some hidden meaning to this?" Anakin touched her forehead dramatically with the back of his hand. "You seem overtired. And the Chancellor isn't the kind of person to use such a bill to harm the Republic…" He paused, studying her face. "Wait, are you saying you don't support this proposal?"
Padmé realized she had gone a bit too far and softened her tone. "What makes you think that? I'm simply against dragging out the process. We could have moved on to more pressing issues long ago, like the situation in the Corellian system."
"It seemed to me that the senator there… Iblis, I think, categorically stated that 'we will sort this out ourselves.'"
"I believe that if all Senators were like you, the war would have been won long ago," Anakin said gently, running his hand over her cheek.
"There wouldn't have been a war at all," Padmé corrected him softly.
"What do you suggest? Surrender or something?"
"In any case, a peace treaty would be…"
"Sorry, but that's impossible. You understand why."
"Yes, I understand. But I can't just watch everything that's happening with an indifferent gaze, can I?"
"That's why I love you." Anakin's blue eyes sparkled. "Speaking of idle talk… Maybe we should do something more useful?"
Without warning, Anakin scooped her up again and headed for the bedroom. Padmé laughed, but she didn't have the strength—or the desire—to resist.
"There's nothing I'd like more than to stay here with you all day, but… Shouldn't you be training your student? Do you even spend any time with her?"
"That's brazen slander," Anakin protested with a grin. "She's a big girl now. I gave her instructions, and she's undoubtedly following them. It's a very important part of a Padawan's training."
Padmé made a mocking face. "I think you have neglected a very important part of *your* training."
"That's unfair," he protested, continuing his slow walk to the bedroom. "If I ever disobeyed Obi-Wan, it was only when he was wrong."
"It seems he was often wrong," she countered, then giggled. "I wonder if your student will think the same about you?"
"She's quite independent," Anakin said. "At least she knows what's good for her and what's not."
"Oh-oh-oh, how strict!" Padmé teased. "Why are you hesitating? Come on, hurry up…"
The bedroom door slid shut behind them, sealing away the weight of the Senate, the war, and the gathering shadows of the galaxy—for a few precious hours, at least.
Outside, Coruscant continued its endless spin. In the distance, the Jedi Temple glowed, where Dagon Marek planned campaigns that would decide the fate of trillions. In two months, *Spear of Light* would ignite. Alliances in the Deep Core and Wild Space were being forged. Umbara awaited conquest.
But for tonight, in this quiet apartment, Anakin and Padmé allowed themselves one small pocket of peace amid the coming storm.
