Chapter 30 - Chapter 28: A New Dawn For Kanishk

Asmee sat at her desk with papers strewn about like fallen leaves in autumn. Each document represented a child's future and each signature was a promise she was determined to keep. The Yateemkhana had become her mission and she felt the weight of every orphan's hopes resting on her shoulders. Just then a soft knock broke her concentration. She looked up to see Manisha Prabhu. She was a familiar figure whose presence brought both comfort and concern. The mid-aged social worker had been a guiding light for many children including Kanishk. Her expression was grave as she stepped inside. "Asmee," Manisha began. Her voice trembling slightly. "I need to talk to you about Kanishk." "What's wrong?" Asmee asked. Her heart racing. "Is he okay?" Manisha took a deep breath. Her eyes reflecting the turmoil within. "He's fine physically but emotionally… he's struggling. He needs stability and a family." Asmee nodded understanding the unspoken urgency in Manisha's voice. "What can I do to help?" "I need financial assistance," Manisha said. Her words tumbling out in a rush. "With everything going on with my husband Dr. Romesh I'm afraid I can't provide him with what he needs. His situation is dire." Asmee's heart sank as she recalled the troubled history of Manisha's husband. Romesh had once been a respected clinical trial investigator but now he was drowning in debt due to his cricket betting addiction. "I know about Romesh's struggles," she replied softly. "It's a terrible situation." "Terrible doesn't begin to cover it," Manisha said her voice thick with emotion. "Romesh lost his job because of his debts. The collection agents are relentless. We're facing eviction. If I don't get support soon, I won't be able to give Kanishk the environment he deserves." Asmee's mind raced. She had always empathized with Manisha having known her for over a decade. The thought of Kanishk being uprooted again was unbearable. "Have you considered reaching out to the Department of Medical Education and Research?" she suggested cautiously. Manisha shook her head. "They've already dismissed Romesh after the scandal. I doubt they'd reconsider." "But your husband has a wealth of experience," Asmee argued. "If I speak to them maybe they will renew his contract. They need someone of his calibre to supervise clinical trials and contribute to research programs." Manisha's eyes widened. Hope flickering in her gaze. "You would do that for us?" "Of course," Asmee replied. "I can't let Kanishk suffer because of circumstances beyond his control. Let me make some calls." As she picked up her phone. The weight of responsibility settled heavily on her. She dialled the number for the DMER keeping her fingers crossed and praying that her words would carry enough weight to sway their decision. "Hello this is Dr. Tushant Deshmukh's office," a voice answered on the other end. "Hi this is Asmee. I need to speak to someone regarding Dr. Romesh Prabhu's contract renewal," she said while trying to keep her voice steady. "Please hold," the voice replied. Asmee clutched the phone tightly. Her mind racing. She could hear the distant sounds of the city outside, the honking cars, the chatter of pedestrians but her focus remained on the matter at hand. After a few moments the line clicked. "This is Dr. Mehta. How can I assist you today?" "As you know Dr. Romesh Prabhu was an integral part of our medical community. His expertise is invaluable and especially at a time when we are pushing forward with new clinical trials," Asmee began. Her voice firm yet respectful. "I believe he deserves a second chance." Dr. Mehta paused. As if considering her words. "I'm aware of the situation. It's unfortunate but the board has decided to move in a different direction."

"What if I could assure you that Dr. Prabhu has taken steps to rectify his situation?" Asmee pressed. "He's committed to returning to his role and contributing positively. I can vouch for his character." There was a long silence on the line and Asmee held her breath. Finally Dr. Mehta spoke again. "I'll bring this up at the next board meeting. But I can't promise anything." "Thank you. That's all I ask," Asmee replied with relief washing over her. "I appreciate your consideration." After hanging up she turned to Manisha who had watched the entire exchange with bated breath. "I did what I could. Now we wait." Manisha wiped a tear from her eye. "Thank you, Asmee. You don't know how much this means to me and to Kanishk." Asmee smiled gently. "He deserves a chance at a happy life. We all do." As they sat together the atmosphere shifted. The weight of uncertainty still loomed but there was also a sense of hope. They would fight for Kanishk for Romesh and for all the children who had been cast aside by a world that often turned its back on the vulnerable. Days passed and the tension in the air was palpable. Asmee continued her work at the orphanage organizing meetings with potential adoptive families while keeping a close eye on Kanishk. She found herself drawn to him more than ever wanting to protect him from the hurt she had witnessed all too often. Then one afternoon as she was reviewing applications her phone buzzed. It was a message from Manisha and her heart raced as she opened it. Asmee, we got the news! Dr. Mehta called. Romesh's contract is renewed! Joy surged through her as she read the words. She quickly texted back. Her fingers flying over the screen. That's amazing! When can we tell Kanishk? Tonight. I want to make it special. Later that evening, Asmee arrived at Manisha's home. A small but cosy apartment filled with the warmth of flickering candles and the scent of homemade curry. Kanishk was seated at the table. His bright eyes curious as he watched the adults whisper and smile.

"Hey, buddy," Asmee greeted him kneeling down to his level. "How's your day been?" "It was okay Ma'am," Kanishk replied with a hint of sadness shadowing his features. "But I miss my friends at the orphanage." Asmee's heart twisted at his words. "I know. But guess what? I have some news that might cheer you up." Kanishk leaned closer, intrigued. "What is it?" Manisha joined them. Her voice filled with excitement. "Kanishk, you know how hard things have been for us lately?" Kanishk nodded slowly as he was still unsure of where this was going. "Well your father Romesh has a new job!" Manisha exclaimed. "They've asked him to come back to work at the hospital. That means we can stay together and we're going to make a real family!" The room fell silent for a moment as Kanishk processed the information. Then, a radiant smile broke across his face lighting up the dim space like the sun breaking through clouds. "Really? We can be a family?" "Yes!" Manisha said. Tears of joy glistening in her eyes. "And you'll always have a home with us." Kanishk jumped up. His laughter ringing like music. "This is the best news ever! I'm so happy!" Asmee felt a wave of relief wash over her. In that moment surrounded by love and laughter she knew they had triumphed over adversity. They were building something beautiful out of the wreckage left behind. A new family bound by resilience and hope. That night as they celebrated with dinner and stories, Asmee realized that their journey was just beginning. There would be challenges ahead but together they would face them. For Kanishk, for Manisha and for every child waiting for their chance at a better life they would become a beacon of hope in the darkness.
