Chapter 32 - Chapter 30: Shadows In The Hallway

The early morning sun filtered through the tall windows of Boarding School casting long shadows across the polished wooden floors. The usual sounds of laughter and chatter filled the air as students gathered for breakfast but an unsettling tension hung over the dining hall. Kanishk sat at the far end of the table his fingers nervously tracing patterns on the surface of his plate. "Did you hear?" whispered Mia, a girl with dark curls and sharp eyes leaning closer to her friend Asmee. "They think Kanishk stole those things. A watch, some money, even Mrs. Thompson's favourite pen." Asmee known among the students as the patron saint of the less fortunate frowned. She had always believed in Kanishk's integrity. "It can't be true. He wouldn't do something like that. Someone must be framing him." Across the room Asmee's son Rishit, a tall boy with an air of arrogance smirked as he watched the unfolding drama. Asmee pinned Rishit with a cold gaze as she got riled up by Rishit's arrogance. An awkward Rishit stayed put being unsure what to say to his mom. Asmee looked too pugnacious But kept her cool. Rishit gave her a soothing smile as Asmee made a dash to the exit door. Rishit stretched out on a chair and leaned toward his two companions who are both from families that owned half of the town. "This is going to be fun," he said. His voice low but dripping with malice. "Let's see how long it takes before they kick him out of here." Those spoiled brats chuckled. Rishit's expression one of privilege and disdain. "We should make sure everyone knows. If the teachers believe he's a thief, he'll be gone in no time. Just imagine the look on my mom's face when her precious Kanishk gets expelled." One of the spoiled brats who was ever the silent follower nodded enthusiastically. "Let's do it. I can get my dad's connections in the medical team. A little bribe here and there and we can have him labelled a lunatic." Meanwhile Asmee returned again with a chilled water bottle and sat beside Kanishk and approached him. Concern etched on her face. "Kanishk, what's going on? I heard about the accusations. You need to tell me the truth." He looked up. His eyes filled with confusion and hurt. "I swear Ma'am, I didn't take anything. I don't even know what they're talking about. It feels like everyone has turned against me overnight." "They're just jealous," she reassured him placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "You've always been the top of your class. They can't stand it. But we'll figure this out together." She threw a cold gaze at Rishit and his pals. Just then the headmaster's voice boomed through the hall. "Attention, students! To address the recent incidents of theft a medical examination will be conducted. Anyone accused will be required to undergo evaluation for their mental stability." Rishit exchanged glances with his pals. Their plan falling into place. "Perfect," Rishit whispered. A sinister grin spreading across his face. "Let the games begin." Rishit induced couple of elder spoiled brat of filthy rich people wanted to wreak vengeance on Kanishk so that he would be drummed out of the boarding. In the days that followed Kanishk found himself under constant scrutiny. The whispers grew louder and the once-friendly faces now turned cold. Each time he entered a room the atmosphere shifted as if he carried some invisible stain. One afternoon as Kanishk walked through the garden he overheard Rishit and his friends discussing their next move. "The report will come back today," Rishit said, barely containing his glee. "Once they label him…then his game will be over." Kanishk's heart raced. He needed proof of something to clear his name before it was too late. He began investigating quietly asking classmates if they had witnessed anything suspicious. His breakthrough came when he stumbled upon a conversation between two girls in the library. "I can't believe they actually think Kanishk would do that," one of them said. "I saw one of Rishit's friend near the locker room the day the things went missing. He was acting really weird." Kanishk's mind raced. If he could prove Rishit's involvement it would turn the tables. That evening he met Asmee in their favourite spot under the old oak tree. "I think I know who's behind this," he said, urgency lacing his words. "It's Rishit. I heard his friend Karan was seen near the lockers." Asmee's eyes widened. She was distressed. Anger gulped her but she remained quiet. "We need evidence, Kanishk. If we confront the guy without proof, they'll just say we're trying to deflect blame." Together they devised a plan. Asmee would distract Raj during dinner while Kanishk searched his locker for any incriminating evidence. The next evening as the sun dipped below the horizon they set their plan in motion. "Hey Karan!" Asmee called out. Her voice bright and cheerful. "Come sit with us!" While Karan was caught up in Asmee's charm Kanishk slipped away. He sneaked in the locker room. His heart pounding in his chest. He reached Karan's locker praying for a miracle. As he opened it with a duplicate key with his breath caught. There hidden beneath a pile of textbooks lay the stolen items. Mrs. Thompson's pen, a silver watch, and several crumpled bills, they all were there stashed behind some worn clothes. Just then footsteps echoed down the hallway. Kanishk quickly stuffed the items into his backpack and closed the locker turning to find Rishit standing there. His arms crossed with a smug smile on his face. "What are you doing, Kanishk?" "I…I was just looking for my books," he stammered trying to keep his voice steady. Rishit stepped closer eyes narrowing. "You're a terrible liar. Everyone knows you're guilty. Soon, you'll be out of here." But Kanishk felt a surge of determination. "Not if I can help it. I know what you and your friends did. I'm going to prove it."Rishit laughed. The sound cold and mocking. "Good luck with that. You'll need it." With newfound resolve, Kanishk returned to Asmee. His heart racing with both fear and excitement. "I found them. I have the proof we need." As they plotted their next step the shadows in Boarding School deepened. The battle lines were drawn and the stakes were higher than either of them could have imagined. The truth was within reach but so were the dangers lurking in the halls waiting to strike when least expected.
