Chapter 2 - Modern Family Pilot II

SF Chapter 02: Modern Family Pilot II

After breakfast with the Dunphys, Daniel decided to go see his father and drove his gray Porsche 911 Carrera to the soccer field.

As he got close to the field, Daniel didn't have to look very hard, since he could already hear a very familiar voice.

Gloria was screaming from the sidelines, "Manny, stop him! Stop him! You can do it!"

But her son stopped halfway, distracted by something.

"Damn it, Manny!" one of the women standing next to her complained, since that made the team concede another goal.

She added, annoyed, "Come on, Coach. You gotta take that kid out."

Gloria snapped her head in her direction. "You wanna take him out? How about I take you out?" she yelled, pointing her fingers vigorously.

"Honey, honey," Jay, who was sitting in a chair, tried to calm his wife.

"Why don't you worry about your son?" Gloria continued her rant. "He spent the first half with his hand in his pants!"

That made the woman shut up and move somewhere else.

"I've wanted to tell her off for the last six weeks." A man approached Gloria. "I'm Josh. Ryan's dad." He held out his hand.

"Hi, I'm Gloria Pritchett," she introduced herself normally. "Manny's mother."

"Oh, and this must be your dad." The man glanced at Jay.

"Her dad?" Jay said. "No, no. That's funny. Actually, no, I'm her husband," he revealed.

"Don't be fooled by the, uh-" he continued, but struggled to get up from the chair. "Give me a second here."

"Dad, we need to talk!" Daniel finally approached.

But then he took a look at the guy who was clearly trying to hit on Gloria. "Dude!"

Daniel gave him a once-over, basically making a face that said, hey, you're a fat loser with barely an average salary - even if she were single, your chances would be zero. ZERO.

And the guy left.

"Daniel, you will not buy a Lamborghini," Jay finally managed to stand up and spoke as if it were a final decision.

"But, Dad-" he tried again, but Jay raised his hand, signaling him to wait.

"When I was your age-" he began the typical adult lecture.

Daniel joked, "Gloria wasn't born yet," completing his father's sentence.

He received a glare from his dad and a chuckle from his stepmother.

He tried again. "You were driving dinosaurs and screaming 'yabba-dabba-doo!'"

"We're done!" his father ended the conversation, walking away somewhat grumpy.

Daniel wasn't worried. If he convinced Gloria, that would be more than enough.

"Momi Gloria," he looked straight into her eyes, fighting against physics, like aways.

Because, as the law of gravity says, larger masses attract smaller masses. And there were two very large masses right in front of him.

"Dáni, your father is worried because a car like that is very fast, very dangerous," she said with her strong accent, placing a motherly arm around him.

"That's totally not it," he denied her idea.

[Jay and Gloria commentary]

"We're very different," Gloria began, sitting on the couch in her beautiful Brentwood mansion. "Jay's from the city. He has a big business. I come from a small village."

"Very poor, but very, very beautiful. It's the number one village in all of Colombia for all the-"

"What's the word?" she asked her husband for help, who was sitting beside her.

"Murders," he replied dryly.

"Yes. The murders," she nodded.

And she kept going, changing the subject as if what she had just revealed were perfectly normal. "I have one beautiful son, while Jay has three."

"Yes," he nodded, "but one of them, in particular, gives me more trouble than all the others combined."

"Don't get me wrong, I'm very proud of him. He is very talented; he made a lot of money from his books…" he admitted. Then he whispered, "Gosh, he's already richer than me, and he is only seventeen!"

And he revealed one of the reasons why he was against buying a Lamborghini. "But he's also spending a lot. He wrote some movie scripts, but refused to sell them, saying they were offering pennies. Then nagged me in doing the movies!"

Jay looked exhausted. "I'm a closet guy, not a movie studio owner!" he complained, since he was the one managing everything.

Gloria gave him a supportive pat.

Daniel got into the back seat, since Jay was driving and Gloria went to sit in the front.

"I'm quitting soccer. It's a game for children," Manny announced beside him.

"No, you're not quitting," his mother shut down the idea. "You would have stopped that goal if you weren't staring at that little girl."

"Hey, I'm with Manny!" Daniel said, making a supportive face. "It is totally justifiable to lose the ball when you're distracted by little girls."

"But for Manny," he clarified, "rule number two - not with little girls."

"Not with underage little girls," he corrected himself. "Not with underage little girls two years younger than you and ilegal." He finally got the rule right.

"She is not a girl. She's a woman," Manny commented, ignoring everything else Daniel had said.

"You know, Gloria, that little blowup with that other mom - why do you have to do things like that?" Jay completely changed the subject.

Gloria replied in her usual loud voice, "Somebody says something about my family, I'm going to-"

Jay cut her off quickly. "I'm just saying. You could tone it down a little. Manny, you're with me on this, right?"

But Manny went back to his original topic. "I wanna tell Brenda Feldman I love her."

"Oh, for God's sake," Jay groaned grumpily.

"Manny, she's sixteen," Gloria tried to reason.

And Manny shot back, "Oh. It's okay for you to take an older lover?"

"Hey, watch it," Jay warned.

"Wait, wait, wait!" Daniel repeated the words. "She is sixteen?!" Then he made a scooping gesture. "Where is she?" And he emphasized, "WHERE is she?"

"Oh, not again!" Manny groaned. "Daniel! You went out with five girls I loved!" he complained, making a slightly traumatized face.

"Oh my God! I'm here, and I left my car parked on the field!" Daniel suddenly remembered that he had come in his Porsche.

[Jay commentary]

"That is another reason I don't want to buy him a Lambo. He sometimes gets distracted… or over focused," Jay took a deep breath, "and he throws everything else aside."

[Commentary ends]

"Oh well, I'll just need to take a cab after," Daniel dismissed his own outburst.

Then he turned to Manny and started counting on his fingers. "It was seven, Manny. I think you didn't know about Anne and Lisa." He smirked, "And the two of them were at the same ti-"

"Daniel!" Jay cut him off. "For God's sake!"
