Chapter 1 - Final Year

"It's your final year in Mustafa starting today. What high school are you planning to go to?"

Ren Aoi stares at his father, Ren Ryomen. Their family was eating breakfast at the dining table. His father never usually asked questions about what he plans in life, but as this is his final year of middle school, it seems his time is up.

Aoi remained silent. He took a sip of water. He didn't answer his father because he didn't want to, but he came to the realization that he truly doesn't know what he wants in life.

His mother, Ami, sighed at this "conversation" between her husband and only son.

"Dear, let's not rush him. He still has time to decide. This is important. It's better if he figures it out on his own, just like you did," Ami says with a slight grin on her face.

"Well, I say it's better if he figures it out now instead of trying to drop out and be a vigilante as a 25-year-old man," Ryomen grumbled.

"HEY! WHAT ABOUT BEING A FIREFIGHTER!" Ryomen shouts out as Aoi is heading to his room.

"Why would I be a firefighter? I might as well just go big or go home," Aoi grumbles.

Heading to his room, Aoi looks in the mirror, around 5'9, with dark blue hair reaching his neck, along with a golden necklace containing a red pearl reaching right below his chest.

He has a slightly above-average build where you can see slight definition on his upper body.

He thought about when he first found out his quirk. He was 5 and was at a funeral for his grandmother. He was holding the necklace given to him as a final gift. As his tears fell, an 8-point star appeared on it.

His mind was transported to a lush tropical island where he met a sea serpent named Vinea. There, he learned what his quirk really was.

Quirk: Djinn. The user can imprint a djinn onto any item, allowing them to control and manipulate the djinn's power at their own will.

Vinea granted him the ability to control water. Although he hasn't truly found out his limits, he has found out he can partially transform into his djinn in what Vinea calls "Half Djinn Equip." This form grants him a mild healing factor, as well as greater control over water and a small body-strengthening quirk.

...

The next morning, on the way to class, his father's words echoed in his mind.

Why not go all the way?

Aoi exhaled slowly.

He didn't particularly care about saving people. But the pay? The benefits? Retiring comfortably after a few years as a rescue hero?

That didn't sound so bad.

Especially if he didn't have to fight villains.

He slid into his seat near the door, second-to-last row. Opened his textbook. No one bothered him, and he preferred it that way. He already had one friend.

And she was more than enough.

"AOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!"

He didn't need to turn around.

Pink hair. Horns. Pink skin.

Mina Ashido stood in the doorway, clapping her hands together with far too much energy for seven in the morning.

"Aoiiiiiiii, pleeeeeeeease help me!"

"No thank you," Aoi replied flatly, not even looking back.

And just like that,

His final year had begun.
