Not through divine insight.
Through pattern recognition.
Guards rotated twice near his quarters.
Two inner disciples trailed him openly, pretending not to.
Lian approached him in the courtyard, her expression tight.
"They're discussing you."
"I expected that."
"They are not debating punishment."
"That is good."
She hesitated.
"They are debating placement."
He paused.
"Placement?"
"If you remain outer sect, it implies Heaven conversed with someone insignificant."
"If they elevate you, it validates you."
"So either choice weakens their authority."
He nodded slowly.
"Yes."
She looked at him carefully.
"You don't seem surprised."
"I told Heaven I seek nothing."
"And now?"
"Now others must decide what to seek from me."
That unsettled her more than anger would have.
