Puyol came off in the 55th minute.
It was a bit earlier than the sixty minutes Martino had planned, but the veteran captain's hamstring had started to tighten up. There was no point in risking a serious tear with over thirty minutes still left to play. When the fourth official raised the electronic board with number 5 in red, the entire Vicente Calderón rose to its feet.
Atlético's supporters, who had spent the whole night loudly cheering against Barcelona, gave Carles Puyol a warm standing ovation. It was pure respect that went far beyond local rivalry. A true giant of Spanish football was walking off a La Liga pitch for one of the very last times, and everyone in the ground recognized the weight of the moment.
Puyol raised his hands toward all four stands in gratitude. He jogged over to Xavi, unstrapped the captain's armband from his sleeve, and slid it snugly onto his longtime teammate's bicep. Puyol muttered a couple of quiet words of encouragement, and Xavi gave a firm nod. The two friends shared a quick embrace before Puyol headed to the bench, letting Piqué run on to take over the central defense.
"That is truly a special scene here at the Calderón," Santiago said softly from the broadcast booth. "Even the home supporters are standing to applaud. Carles Puyol receives a wonderful tribute from a fierce rival in what might be one of his final league appearances."
Inés stayed silent for a few beats, simply letting the roar of the stadium fill the broadcast.
Piqué's arrival brought an immediate sense of calm to the backline, and with the emotional farewell behind them, Barcelona shifted into another gear.
Just three minutes later, in the 58th minute, they found the equalizer.
It started with Iniesta picking up the ball between the lines. Two Atlético midfielders rushed in together to shut him down, but that rash movement created an open passing pocket right at the edge of the box. Iniesta casually slipped the ball sideways into Messi's path.
Messi set himself with one clean touch. Godín broke out of the defensive line to charge him down, knowing that giving Messi open space at the edge of the area was fatal. Leaving his post, however, created an even bigger problem.
Messi curled a left-footed strike around Godín's outstretched boot, sending the ball curving past Thibaut Courtois's dive and into the top corner.
Fweet—!
1-1.
The Barcelona bench jumped up in celebration. Messi ran over to the corner where three thousand traveling supporters were going wild, with Lorenzo and Neymar sprinting right behind him. The heavy attention on Lorenzo had opened up the space, and Messi had finished it with clinical precision.
"MESSI! It is one-one!" Santiago yelled into his microphone. "You just cannot leave him that much room! Atlético were so worried about Lorenzo that they forgot about Lionel Messi, and he makes them pay every single time!"
Atlético, however, refused to back down. Giving up easily was never in their nature. Simeone had built his entire team culture on fighting back whenever things looked difficult.
In the 67th minute, the hosts took the lead right back.
Koke whipped an inswinging corner into the heart of the box. Godín attacked the delivery with raw power, rising above Mascherano to plant a firm header toward goal. Valdés got a desperate palm to the ball, but the force carried it over the goal line.
Atlético 2 - 1 Barcelona.
The Calderón erupted all over again. Godín sprinted toward the corner flag with a raised fist while Simeone punched the air along the touchline. Barcelona's players shared anxious glances, and a ripple of nervous tension swept through the away section.
The league title, which had seemed so close just an hour earlier, was slipping away again.
"Godín puts Atlético back in front!" Santiago shouted as the noise level spiked. "The Uruguayan center-back wins the aerial battle, and the home fans can truly feel a famous victory!"
Martino stood up from the bench, walked to the edge of his technical area, and waved Neymar over during a brief break in play.
"Stop overthinking your passes out there," Martino instructed him directly. "Take your man on. Every single time you get the ball out wide, drive right at him. Do not recycle it safely. Just go attack the box."
Neymar wiped sweat from his eyes and gave a sharp nod. "Got it, boss."
In the 74th minute, Neymar delivered on that command.
Alba slid a crisp pass into his path along the left touchline. Neymar immediately drove straight at Juanfran, threw a lightning-quick stepover to throw the defender off balance, and cut inside onto his right foot. From just inside the edge of the area, he whipped a venomous curling effort toward the far corner. The ball swerved beyond Courtois's reach, grazed the inside of the far post, and bounced into the back of the net.
2-2.
The away supporters erupted into pure chaos. Neymar sprinted the length of the touchline before dropping into a long knee slide near the corner flag, where his teammates quickly piled on top of him.
Lorenzo arrived a second later, grabbing Neymar by the shoulder to help him up off the turf. "Honestly, that was an unbelievable hit."
Neymar caught his breath, flashing a huge grin through the huddle. "See? I keep telling you my curling shot from the left is definitely cleaner than yours."
Lorenzo laughed, shaking his head. "Usually it isn't, but that one was pretty sweet, I have to admit."
"MESSI AND NEYMAR!" Santiago shouted, his voice cracking from the excitement. "Barcelona have clawed their way back for a second time! It is two-two at the Calderón, and you can see the sheer disbelief on Atlético's faces after throwing everything into this battle!"
Inés added her thoughts as the teams reset. "Just look at how this match has played out. Atlético have dedicated three defenders to crowding out Lorenzo for seventy-five minutes. He has not found the net tonight, but Messi and Neymar have both scored because of all the attention Lorenzo continues to draw. Simeone's defensive gamble has left the other two superstars with far too much freedom."
Over on the sideline, Simeone stood with his hands on his hips, his jaw set tightly. His game plan had technically worked by keeping Lorenzo quiet, yet the scoreboard still read 2-2 because containing only one part of Barcelona's front three was never going to be enough.
Across the pitch, Lorenzo stood over the center circle as the clock ticked into the seventy-fifth minute, leaving fifteen minutes of regular time to play. Godín stayed glued to his shoulder, and Miranda lingered just a few yards away, still fully committed to tracking the teenager.
Lorenzo took a slow breath and adjusted his shin pads.
Atlético were so consumed with neutralizing him through physical battles that they seemed to have forgotten one crucial detail. The real threat was not just how often he got on the scoresheet, but his habit of showing up in the decisive moments when the game was on the line.
